Vinous - Antonio Galloni (89-91)

The 2018 Croix-Mouton is a dark, pliant Bordeaux Supérieur. Black cherry, licorice, spice and crème de cassis give this sumptuous, racy wine striking texture and depth. The purity of the fruit and the wine's freshness are notable.

Vinous - Neal Martin (89-91)

I expressed reservations towards Pierre Lurton's 2019 Marjosse in my en primeur report earlier this year and as a result, a second sample was shipped to me. This was so much better. The aromatics are far more controlled and focused with the same black cherries and boysenberry without the shroud of alcohol. The palate is opulent and generous, but much more detailed compared to the first sample and demonstrating much more purity on the finish. This is much more in line with my expectations and I am happy to upgrade my score.

The 2020 La Cour d'Argent is a terrific Bordeaux Superieur. Black cherry, chocolate, dried herbs and leather lend striking energy to this flavorful Merlot-based red. Incisive tannins need time to soften, but there is enough sheer density to make me think that all the 2020 requires is patience. This is an impressive effort from Denis Barraud. Tasted two times.

The 2021 La Cour d'Argent, cropped at a measly 11hL/ha, has a light, airy nose of blackberry and briar scents. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly rigid tannins, but they should soften with barrel maturation. Expect this to drink well for 3–5 years.

The 2019 Cour d'Argent is just as impressive from bottle as it was en primeur. Succulent dark cherry, mocha, licorice and spice are all kicked up in this racy, supple Bordeaux Supérieur. Pretty floral accents lift the finish. The 2019 is beautifully done. Tasted two times.

The 2016 Puygueraud Blanc is bright, crisp and intensely saline, with that classic touch of reduction that adds character and tension to the citrus, orchard fruit, sage and floral notes. This is very nicely done. The blend is 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Sauvignon Gris. In 2016, the Blanc is absolutely delicious. Tasted three times.

The 2020 Puygueraud Blanc is full of lemon peel, almond, dried flowers, apricot and chamomile. Light and gracious, with pretty tropical overtones, it is impeccably rendered and all the elements are nicely balanced.

The 2019 La Prade is a gorgeous, inviting wine. Succulent dark cherry, menthol, licorice, chocolate, spice and mocha flesh out in this racy, beautifully layered Côtes de Bordeaux from Nicolas Thienpont. The 2019 has come together so well. Tasted three times.

The 2017 La Prade is rich and powerful, just as it was from barrel. A rush of blackberry jam, gravel, spice, leather and smoke gives the 2017 its somber, virile personality. Potent in both its fruit and tannic structure, the 2017 could use a year or two in bottle to come together, but I imagine it will always remain a bit rustic. There is no shortage of intensity, that much is clear. Yields are down 50% - 7 hectares in production, 4.5 were not frosted, but this is rustic. Tasted three times.

The 2020 Puygueraud has a very satisfying and harmonious nose: blackberry, briary, freshly rolled tobacco and light truffle scents, nicely focused and composed. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, as I found in barrel. Quite Left Bank in style with graphite notes towards the finish with a briny aftertaste. Excellent.

The 2020 Peyrabon has an attractive nose with wild strawberry and raspberry scents. Quite concentrated, it retains delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, well-integrated oak, harmonious with a lovely dash of cracked black pepper mixed with sage on the finish. Very fine.

The 2014 Les Grands Chênes is plump, juicy and accessible, all of which make it an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years. In 2014, Les Grands Chênes is on the more delicate side of things, but it is nevertheless very nicely done. Hints of licorice and lavender add nuance to the dark-toned flavors. The 2014 is delicious now, but it will develop more complexity over time. Tasted two times.

Decanter World Wine Awards 2023 (97)

Our Best in Show journey across Northern Spain continues with a 2020 Bierzo, grown just across the provincial border from Galicia into Castilla y Léon. It’s another zone of steep slopes and old vines – the variety in this case being Mencia (known as Jaen in Portugal’s Dão region). This wine is deep black-red in colour and vivacious and urgent in aroma: wild plums mingled with the woodland scents of leaf, copse and forest floor. The palate is fruit-packed and vibrant, vigorous with an energy derived both from ripe acidity and fresh though smooth tannins; look out, too, for a stony, bitter-edged finish perhaps derived from the region’s slate soils. Wonderful drinking now in the flush of youth, but fruit of this quality will hold well for a few years yet.

The 2020 Ferran has a crisp, pure bouquet of black cherries, bilberry, black olive and subtle marine scents unfolding with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins, fine acidity, modest depth and quite a structured, dark-chocolate-tinged finish. Not a long-term prospect, perhaps, but nicely proportioned.
