The 2020 Quinault L’Enclos contains no Cabernet Sauvignon this year due to mildew. It has an intense bouquet of black cherries, blueberry and crushed iris flower. The oak is neatly enmeshed and feels delineated and tensile. The palate is medium-bodied with fine but firm tannins, and lightly spiced, with white pepper and sage seasoning the black fruit. Quite structured and powerful on the finish, this is a long-term Saint-Émilion that will benefit from several years in the cellar.HK$980.00 -

The 2018 Touriga Nacional was aged for 16 to 18 months, depending on which of two plots, in 90% new oak. It comes in at just 14.6% alcohol. More flavorful and aromatic than its sibling, the Touriga Franca, this is otherwise along the same lines. This Touriga Nacional maintains the Franca's mid-palate finesse, as well as the feeling it projects that it is the crushed essence of the grape. There's a little oak present, but not as much as you might think. This, too, will absorb the oak even better with a couple of years in the cellar, but the wood is very well handled. It is not really intrusive even now, and there is no "drenched in vanilla" demeanor at all. The tannins are very ripe, but with aeration this becomes much firmer on the finish, proving that it has the structure to age. Of all of Crasto's upper-level wines this report, it is probably this that most leans to hedonism, thanks to the aromatics and flavor, yet it is still very elegant and carefully crafted. It is never a sloppy fruit bomb. This succulent and enticing Touriga Nacional is impossible to resist, even today, but you will definitely be rewarded if you give it a few years of age to become more expressive. There were just 9,113 bottles produced, plus some larger format bottles.HK$990.00 -

Made only in top years from the best lots, like all Noval's reds this is fermented in stainless steel then aged in French oak - in this case for 10 months in 35% new oak. Signature orange blossom riffs make for a delicate interplay of fruit and flower. A plume of fine, schistous tannins and bright acidity gently but persuasively anchor and extend its inky, perfumed black berry and plum fruits, with hints of bergamot, milk chocolate, clove, cedar and cinnamon. Very fine and such a great example of the variety, and nearly half the price of the Reserva!HK$3,080.00 -

Wine Advocate (95)
The backward and undeveloped 2022 Quinta do Vale Meão has all the baby fat, the spicy oak and the tannins that call for time in bottle. The toast from the barrels is still quite noticeable, but the palate is easier to read. Although the tannins did not quite reach the refinement of those from 2021, they were fine enough, abundant and still raw. The wine finished with a moderate 13.3% alcohol. Always selected from their oldest plots, the blend this year is 60% Touriga Nacional, 30% Touriga Franca, 5% Tinta Barroca and 5% Tinta Roriz matured in 225-liter French oak barrels, 45% of them new. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2024.HK$9,000.00 -

White truffles, mocha, spices, incense, grilled herbs, plums and black cherries are some of the many notes that burst from the glass in the 2001 Alzero. Firm tannins provide the backbone for this striking, beautifully delineated wine. Unlike the 1997 or 2000, the 2001 is an Alzero that doesn’t give up its charms too easily, instead it is a wine clearly built for the cellar. Readers will have to be patient, but those who can find the 2001 should not hesitate, as it is magnificent. Sweet floral and spiced notes resonate on the vibrant, textured finish. Alzero is Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. It remains one of the truly unique wines not just of Italy, but of the world.HK$50,415.00 -

The 2005 Alzero is all about finesse. Freshly cut flowers, mint and sweet red berries are laced together in a finessed, racy Alzero loaded with class. Because of its mid-weight structure, the 2005 should drink well relatively early, although it will always have the bright, refreshing acidity of the cool vintage. The mid-weight structure makes the 2005 accessible today. Quintarelli fans should note that there will be no Amarone in 2005, only Rosso del Bepi. The 2005 is approximately 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot.HK$20,590.00 -
(1x150cl) 2009Vinous (96)
The 2009 Alzero Cabernet is a knockout, showing a captivating display of sour cherries, licorice and mint offset by mocha and hints of tobacco. This is elegance personified, as a velvety wave of sweet red and black fruits is further complemented by confectionary spices and contrasting notes of espresso and cacao. There is so much energy to be found within the 2009. It bristles with residual acids, minerals and sour citrus through the finale, while still showing a gorgeous inner sweetness through a note of ripe plums under an air of violets and lavender. This is so easy to like today that it’s hard to recommend waiting. However, there’s much more to be seen over time, and patience will be rewarded. The Alzero Cabernet is a blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot dried prior to vinification through appassimento.HK$6,575.00 -
Wine Advocate (96)
The Quintarelli Giuseppe 2012 Cabernet Alzero (packaged in a heavy glass bottle) is a stunning wine that delivers a level of cautious brawn, intensity and fruit weight that sets this wine apart within the portfolio. The blend is 40% Cabernet Franc, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, and the grapes all undergo a few months of appassimento. I've been asked about possible perception of VA (volatile acidity) that can sometimes appear in wines made with air-dried fruit. As a much-respected Italian colleague once told me, "serve a dare spalla," ("it gives a shoulder to the wine"), and I can't help but admire the beautifully lifted and upright quality of the bouquet that appears especially radiant and buoyant in this wine. The magic, whatever it is, works.HK$5,590.00 -
