This is an incredibly elegant expression of Nebbiolo derived from a 0.22-hectare plot that was purchased in 1961. There is a crazy story behind the acquisition involving Luca's grandfather and the previous owner who apparently was especially unlucky at cards. The Roagna 2019 Barbaresco Asili Vecchie Viti is especially polished and fine with an almost glossy texture. This lucky vineyard is covered with a unique permaculture, including wild grasses. Luca Roagna does not till the land and he leaves that green regenerative cover crop untouched. The wine is lean and light in appearance, but again in typical Roagna fashion, the delicate look of the wine comes in contrast to the complexity, depth and power on offer.HK$20,290.00 -

Drawing its fruit from a leased vineyard in Neive, the Roagna 2014 Barbaresco Albesani opens to a medium ruby color with pretty garnet highlights. The wine is redolent of dark fruit, dried cherry, tilled earth and black licorice. There is much more aromatic intensity here than you might expect given the rather subtle and nuanced appearance the wine makes in the glass. The soils in Albesani are fundamentally calcareous, and these conditions add to the perfumed and fragrant qualities you get here. Albesani, however, is planted in part to very old vines, and there is more active limestone in the white soils and maybe a little less sand. The Roagna 2019 Barbaresco Albesani presents an impressive bouquet with a wide span of aromas that start off with blue flower and pressed rose and extend gently to iron ore and crushed stone. There is a ferrous quality as well. The wine is light and translucent in appearance, but don't underestimate the power it delivers to the palate. The 2008 Barbaresco Crichët Pajé is a gorgeous, translucent wine that shows this cool, late-ripening vintage at its best. Sweet red cherry, mint, kirsch, hard candy and white pepper are all beautifully delineated. In many vintages, Crichët Pajé was massively tannic and forbidding. The 2008 is the most refined vintage of this wine I have ever tasted. Put simply, the 2008 is sublime. Even so, my impression, and hope, is that subsequent vintages will be even better.HK$48,880.00 -

The 2010 Barbaresco Crichët Pajè is one of the most captivating and arrestingly beautiful wines I have ever tasted from Roagna. Intense, penetrating Nebbiolo aromatics make a strong opening statement before the 2010 literally takes over all the sense. Medium in body and yet also remarkably deep. Rose petal, kirsch, dried herbs, hard candy, mint and sweet spice develop in the glass, but it is the wine's sense of harmony that really stands out. Just bottled, the 2011 Barbaresco Crichët Pajè is unbelievably refined. Sweet red cherry, rosewater, mint, dried flowers, pine and kirsch give the 2011 an upper register of perfume that is utterly beguiling. Silky and classy to the core, the 2011 is the most sensual Crichët Pajè I can remember tasting. There is plenty of tannin, that is clear, but it is also pretty much buried by the sheer luxuriousness of the fruit. This is such a gorgeous and complete wine. Imagine Burgundy with Nebbiolo acids and tannins. Among other things, that means the 2012 will drink well with minimal cellaring, in relative terms for this bottling. Of the three single-vineyard Barbarescos produced by Luca Roagna, Gallina tends to be finest and the most delicate. This parcel was leased up until one year ago when Luca was finally able to buy it. It measures one hectare and is characterized by sandy soils. These conditions give rise to floral perfumes with sweet, soapy aromas of lavender and lilac. The 2019 Barbaresco Gallina is underpinned by a long sense of silkiness and finesse. The tannins are sweet, and the wine shows ample energy before closing with polished intensity.HK$7,150.00
