The 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a complex bouquet that is slightly more Musigny in personality than I expected. There is mainly dark fruit here, mixed with potpourri and incense and becoming more flamboyant as it aerates in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, and quite compact in style because, as François Millet noted, these 2017s are beginning to close down. But there is certainly good density here, and an enticing tensile finish.HK$3,885.00 -

The 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is a limpid deep purple. It has a heavenly bouquet distantly related to the Les Amoureuses, offering precocious but detailed blueberry, black cherry, crushed iris petal and crushed limestone aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with an edgy, marine-influenced opening, a tang of shucked oyster shells infusing the black and blueberry fruit, leading to a detailed, tensile, lightly spiced finish. A long tail of white pepper lingers on the aftertaste. This is absolutely divine.HK$12,485.00 -

Burghound (93-95)
(from a 2.67 ha parcel situated entirely in terres rouges soil in the far southern portion of the vineyard). A riper and more restrained nose requires some swirling to reveal its aromas of plum liqueur, blue berry, earth and a more restricted range of spice elements. The bigger and richer flavors possess an opulent richness and a velvety texture that coats the palate and enrobes the firmer tannic spine shaping the powerful, tautly muscular and strikingly persistent finale. This offers a completely different expression compared to the Amoureuses but one that is equally interesting. This too possesses superb development potential though patience definitely advised. The 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a very tight nose at first, opening with black cherries, iodine, peony and inky scents. Quintessentially Bonnes Mares. The palate is quite dense on the entry, slightly lactic in texture with hints of dark chocolate infusing the dark berry fruit, the finish structured and more Morey-like in style. This will need a decade in bottle.HK$13,230.00 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (96)
The 2021 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru exceeds my predictions from barrel. It has an exquisite bouquet with black plum and raspberry fruit, hints of iris flower and violet neatly entwined with new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fluid tannins. Just a pinch of white pepper marries beautifully with the black fruit. Silky in texture, cohesive and gaining weight and density towards the finish, this is a serious Bonnes-Mares with ageing potential. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.HK$16,600.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (97)
In bottle. Made as three cuvees, then assembled. A rich mid purple with a deliciously heady bouquet, the sumptuous side of dark raspberry, perfumed yet precise, purple fruit with some redder layers beneath, a little white pepper spice, multiple layers of fruit, very engaging with just a very slight youthful bitterness. Irreproachable. Drink from 2032-2045. Tasted: November 2023.HK$11,165.00 -
Vinous (93)
Bright dark red. Knockout nose features a basket of red fruits, roast coffee and tangy spices. Very sweet, thick and dense; a fairly big wine but vibrant and harmonious. Wonderfully intense red fruit and spice flavors build inexorably on the finish. Tannins are dusty and fine.HK$4,485.00 -

Representing as always a blend between wine from young vines in Musigny and whatever lots from the old vines Millet and his colleagues decide to cull from the Vieilles Vignes assemblage, the de Vogue 2006 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru offers a gorgeous nose of diverse flowers and quince that momentarily put me in mind of great Chenin – although abundant sweet red fruits quickly rush in. There is a deep saline, carnal savor here that offers riveting counterpoint to the ripe berries and effusive flowers, and the vintage seductiveness encompasses a plush tactile impression and as well as a finish that would no doubt have a taster visiting from the a few centuries back waxing rhapsodic about bodily humors. Something, at any rate, seems very immediate about this wine's sensuality. It should prove fascinating to follow for the better part of a decade.HK$4,270.00 -

Cocoa powder-dusted ripe black raspberry mingles with dark forest floor elements; roasted, subtly caramelized potato skins; and bloody red meat in the fascinating de Vogue 2007 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru. Caressing, rounded richness and sheer generosity characteristic for the entire vintage collection at this address by no means precludes admirable buoyancy and intriguing as well as enticing persistence that compels the next sniff and sip. This should be well worth following for at least 6-8 years, and will in that course of time doubtless more obviously distance itself from the corresponding village-level bottling. But while I may underestimate its longevity, it would I think be a shame if one waited to embrace this Pinot until the youthful bloom was not longer in its cheeks. Unfortunately – a not uncommon circumstance at this address – I was unable to taste the rare de Vogue Les Amoureuses of the vintage.HK$24,425.00 -

The 2008 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru (from young vines in Musigny) is a powerful, inward wine. There is lovely depth to the fruit, but the wine remains tightly coiled at this stage, even if occasional glimmers of richness emerge over time. Cloves, cinnamon and a host of other spiced notes add complexity on the finish. This is another superb, textured wine from de Vogue. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028.HK$2,925.00 -
(6x75cl) 2009Vinous (93)
The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru has a rip-roaring bouquet of feisty raspberry coulis, wild strawberry and plum aromas, hints of kirsch and tar emerging with time. Rich but controlled. The palate is very well balanced with a fine line of acidity, quite plump in the mouth with hints of clove and orange zest. There is real depth and group here, a lovely roundness towards the sensual finish with sufficient energy to suggest it will give another decade of drinking pleasure with ease. Tasted at Bistro de l'Hôtel in Beaune.HK$25,770.00 -
(1x150cl) 2010Vinous (94)
The 2010 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru opens with an explosive bouquet laced with dark red fruit, mint, flowers and graphite. Cool, mineral notes are woven throughout, giving the wine its sense of urgency. A final blast of plums and black cherries informs the powerful, structured finish. This is an impressive showing. The 1er Cru is made from young vines in Musigny.HK$12,140.00 -

A big step up from the villages, the 2011 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru bursts from the glass with an exotic melange of dark red/blackish fruits. Graphite, rose petal, cinnamon and raspberry candy follow, adding notable dimension, complexity and nuance. I very much like the sense of energy and tension here. This is a terrific showing from de Vogüé.HK$9,595.00 -

Deep, bright red. Deep, musky aromas of blackberry, blueberry, boysenberry, mocha and wild herbs lifted by rose and lavender. Round, broad and silky, offering outstanding depth and sucrosité but also excellent grip. Wonderfully rich, full and complex, finishing with superb rising length and saline minerality. A great vintage for these younger Musigny vines, showing compelling purity of fruit.HK$6,510.00 -

25% new oak. Allier. ‘Young’ vines (15-25 years old) in Le Musigny. Intense, very fruity and round. Pretty smashing! Much closer to a grand cru than a premier cru. Really exciting. Very fine tannins on the end.HK$4,950.00 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru, from the young vines in Musigny, has more intensity than the Village Cru, coming across slightly more opaque and secretive. The palate is beautifully balanced with saturated tannin and a fine thread of acidity. Full of energy that flows through the sorbet-fresh finish, and silky-smooth in texture. This oft-overlooked cuvée comes highly recommended. Superb.HK$9,130.00 -
Vinous (91-93)
Medium red. Classic aromas of raspberry, flowers, minerals and iron. Sweeter and suppler than the village wine, with very good density of material and grip but a light touch. Tangy, intense, pure and elegant, with a distinctly rocky aspect to the raspberry fruit. Precise and very long. A superb showing.HK$63,190.00 -
Vinous (90-93)
(racked a week before my tasting) Medium red. Lively aromas of raspberry, minerals, flowers and menthol. Suave, sappy and juicy, with lovely sneaky flavor intensity to the deep red fruit and mineral flavors. Finishes quite dry and pure, with building, dusty tannins, firm mineral grip and lovely lingering perfume.HK$12,170.00 -
Wine Advocate (94-95)
The de Vogue 2008 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses is alluringly scented with iris, red raspberry, citrus oils, and illusive intimations of crystalline, crushed stone minerality. The richness of fruit here does indeed support Millet’s description of “syrup,” but at the same time, one could hardly do better than accept his characterization of this particular wine as displaying “the synergy between natural minerality and the freshness of the 2008 vintage.” There is a subtlety and transparency of fruit to mineral and floral nuances here reminiscent of water color, a metaphor of mine with which Millet is willing to go along on several levels, including its support of his notion that the fruit character of the vintage is fragile, but that once captured in bottle in timely fashion will not easily fade. I would expect great things from this deeply complex yet ethereal, persistently shimmering beauty over the next 12-15 years.HK$25,525.00 -
Vinous (92-94)
Deep, bright red. Subtle, pure nose offers black raspberry, black cherry, mint, menthol and a hint of citrus skin. Wonderfully silky and sweet but the black fruit flavors come off more savory than sugary owing to the wine's strong limestone character. Finishes sappy, uncompromisingly dry and very long, with firm tannins and lovely mineral and floral lift.HK$6,850.00 -
Jancis Robinson (18)
Bright crimson. Strong mineral element on the nose. Not at all sweet and perfumed. More of a sportsman – rigorous and muscular. Very pure and fresh. Sappy. Not flattering but speaks its mind.HK$7,380.00 -
Wine Advocate (94-96)
The 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Amoureuses is very different from the Chambolle Premier Cru, This explodes with blueberry and blackberry, wilted violets and then later, a touch of boysenberry jam. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe dark cherry fruit, a vein of white pepper, fine structured and very pure with superb tension and mineralité bursting through on the finish. This is a divine Amoureuses, probably more approachable when young compared to recent vintages, but with the substance to age as this cuvée has an inclination to do.HK$7,070.00 -
Wine Advocate (95-97)
The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru les Amoureuses has a very pure and seductive bouquet with both blood orange and orange rind infusing the black fruit, beautifully focused and with perhaps a greater degree of transparency than many recent vintages. You can feel the terroir here. The palate is underpinned by fine tannin and superb tension. There is a surfeit of energy here, avoiding any heaviness with effortless ease, those Asian spices and a pinch of white pepper enlivening the focused and sophisticated finish. This will equal the two grand crus in the long-term.HK$11,080.00 -
Vinous (94)
The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru has an opulent and high-toned bouquet, quite Bonnes-Mares in style, with copious red and blue fruit laced with wilted violet petals. The oak comes across a little stronger here although it is simpatico with the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannin, ripe and vivacious, almost confit-like. There are layers of blue fruit towards the finish that evolves a slightly chalky texture, but there is very good persistency here. Superb. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.HK$7,915.00
