The 2017 Barolo Mosconi Vigna Ped is deep, resonant and expansive, as wines from this site tend to be. In this tasting, the Mosconi is wonderfully deep. Its stature alone is compelling. And yet there is so much to the Mosconi. Readers will find a Barolo that melds together a rich, racy expression of fruit with plenty of structure that wraps everything together. Rich red fruit, blood orange, tar, spice and cedar build as the 2017 gains volume through to the finish.HK$2,790.00 -
(6x75cl) 2018Vinous (90)
The 2018 Barolo Mosconi Vigna Ped comes across as a bit light for this cru, where the wines are generally bigger and deeper. Even so, all the elements are so well balanced. Cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and crushed flowers lend wonderful aromatic nuance. The 2018 is unusually transparent, but that's not a bad thing at all, as Mosconi Barolos are typically brutes.HK$3,615.00 -
(6x75cl) 2019Vinous (97)
The 2019 Barolo Mosconi Vigna Ped shows all the depth that is typical of this site. A rush of dark red fruit, smoke, tar, gravel, incense and crushed rose petals builds as the 2019 shows off its remarkable depth and textural intensity. There's real character and pedigree here. Time in the glass releases layers of fruit that build into the huge, substantial finish. What a wine!HK$3,835.00 -

Equally compelling, the 2020 Barolo Mosconi Vigna Ped boasts a ruby hue and reveals layered notes of blood orange, apricot, roses, tea leaf, and wild raspberries. Savory on the palate, it has a noble structure, with outstanding definition and persistence. I ‘m impressed with the overall balance and finesse this wine has to offer. Drink 2025-2045.HK$3,390.00 -

Good deep medium red. Brooding aromas of red berries, red cherry, minerals and sweet oak. Thick and lush but juicy, with lovely minerality contributing to the impression of grip. Wonderfully pure, sweet red fruit flavors. This, too, builds impressively toward the back and lingers impressively on the aftertaste. The finish features lush, suave tannins that coat the front teeth and incisors. A great 2001 Barolo.HK$7,090.00 -

Menthol, pine, sweet tobacco and incense are some of the many notes that take shape in the 2003 Barolo Sorì Ginestra. Deep, pungent and beautifully expressive, the 2003 has developed very well. The Ginestra has more fruit intensity than the Vigna del Gris, but also correspondingly higher tannin.HK$5,290.00 -
(6x75cl) 2004Vinous (96)
Saturated red-ruby color. Great purity of fruit on the nose, which combines raspberry, minerals, rose petal, truffle and vanilla; this shut down quickly with air. Dense, sappy and primary, with superb intensity and lift in the middle palate. Floral and minty nuances contribute to the impression of youthful vibrancy. The sappy, spicy, rising finish boasts outstanding length, great floral lift and noble tannins. A real Barolo knockout. Sure it's young and destined to be long-lived, but this is balanced from the outset.HK$4,485.00 -

Very dark blackish brown. Strange sweet, waxy aromas. Very dry finish. Quite hard work! This needs a LOT of time and is still very tarry on the end though I am inclined to believe it will all come right in the end. Massively packed with flavour. And the tannins are well managed. Bonfire aromas. Great energy.HK$5,450.00 -
(12x75cl) 2007Vinous (96)
Bright, saturated ruby-red. Knockout nose reminded me of grand cru Burgundy, showing scents of black cherry, cassis, violet, licorice, minerals, tobacco and mocha. Like a liquid confection in the mouth, with a silky, creamy middle that hints at the wine's alcoholic richness without coming across as overripe or heavy. The 2008 version is more tightly wound and high-pitched; this is powerful but freakishly smooth: pure pleasure in a bottle. Its substantial sweet tannins and great palate-staining length suggest that it will be long-lived.HK$6,950.00 -

(from vines averaging 30 years of age): Bright, deep red. Ripe, minerally aromas of cherry liqueur, spun sugar, mocha, flowers and sweet oak. Wonderfully fat, sweet, creamy and full, especially in the context of this vintage. Saturates the palate with a wave of raspberry, mocha and truffle flavors. Remarkably showy already but this should be a cellar treasure. Finishes with extremely refined tannins and outstanding length. A baby today, even if its high quality is easy to see. Guido Fantino describes 2008 as an unbelievable vintage, with a near-perfect vegetative cycle, and perfect day-night temperature differences.HK$10,585.00 -

Last in the lineup is the 2009 Barolo Sori Ginestra that incorporates many of the high points of the two wines described above. You get the toasted spiciness of the Barolo Vigna del Gris as well as the Nebbiolo brightness of the Barolo Mosconi. In between those two poles are shades of licorice, spice, balsam notes, crushed granite and cedar. The wine is stacked tall, one plush layer on top of the next and the palate is rewarded with a lovely quality of tannin that is firm and unyielding but also polished and tight at the same time. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2030.HK$7,090.00 -

From 40-year-old vines that enjoy southern exposures, the 2010 Barolo Sori Ginestra is the estate’s most complete and powerful wine. You can tell that the wine is shaped by rich, compact soils similar to what is found in the Mosconi cru. Barolo Sori Ginestra is a generous, richly textured wine with juicy tannins and a succulent mouthfeel. The tannins are not aggressive, but they do leave their mark. Overall, the wine’s sugars, alcohol, fruit and acidity are expertly balanced. Drink: 2017-2033.HK$7,000.00 -

A rush of dark red and black fruit, menthol, mocha, spice, tobacco and cedar flesh out in the 2011 Barolo Sorì Ginestra. Some of the typical darker, more balsamic notes of Ginestra are covered by the pure intensity of the fruit. As always, Ginestra is a wine that is defined by its combination of expressive aromatics, rich fruit and incisive tannins. In 2011 readers should expect a Ginestra that will drink well a little earlier than normal.HK$8,350.00 -

The 2012 Barolo Sorì Ginestra is one of the more understated wines I have tasted here in some time. Silky, pliant and expressive, the 2012 boasts considerable aromatic presence to match its overall weight and intensity on the palate. A host of lavender, smoke, mint, plum, spice and savory herb overtones add the closing shades of nuance.HK$3,760.00 -

The 2013 Barolo Ginestra Vigna Sorì Ginestra shows a whole other level of fiber and textural richness. This is a stunning wine from thicker soils that deliver more structure, firmness and overall depth. With that superiore richness, the wine is also endowed with balanced acidity, plump primary fruit and an elegant touch of balsam or menthol herb on the finish. This drives the finish forward for a few long and glorious minutes. Dig deeper still, and you find a sweet note of chocolate hazelnut.HK$3,285.00 -

The 2014 Barolo Sorì Ginestra is striking. Ample, creamy and voluptuous, it exudes class from the very first taste. Like all of these wines, the 2014 Sori has a sweetness of tannin that is impossible to miss. Lavender, blueberry jam, spice and menthol build into the sumptuous, enveloping finish. The 2014 is a real stunner. That's all there is to it.HK$6,200.00 -

The 2017 Barolo Ginestra Vigna Sorì Ginestra is another gorgeous, expressive wine in this range. Broad and ample, the 2017 captures all of the personality of this site. Dark-fleshed fruit, spice, menthol, licorice, espresso, dried flowers and pine infuse the 2017 with myriad layers of dimension. There is plenty of Ginestra energy and tannin, so a few years of cellaring is a must.HK$1,435.00
