Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)
Not deeper in colour, perhaps just a touch brighter even than the village Vosne. An even finer detail, with more precision, still just a note too much of new oak. Broader shoulders, more structure behind, which tames the fruit and stops it getting soupy. An exceptional intensity of liquid raspberry with great persistence. Drink from 2027-2033.HK$13,445.00 -
Winehog (93)
This is a special wine, made from a selection of individual vines in Hautes Maizières that are more than 60 years old. There’s 100% new oak, but it is very discreet. It shows deep red fruit, and on the nose darker red roses. Intense and profound, this is charming and floral. Like the others, 100% “tri en nuage.”HK$8,575.00 -

5 Star Wine. A selection of individual old vines within Vosne-Romanée. A richer purple and notably more powerful in bouquet without toppling over. What an explosion of fruit, so totally luscious, roses and raspberries, a fraction of pepper, impeccable length. The beginnings of a chocolate note but above all some really well harnessed deep raspberry fruit still with floral overtones. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted Nov 2024.HK$8,390.00 -
Halliday Wine Companion (94)
As usual, shows clear varietal character, with a mix of black olive, plum and tobacco on the bouquet and the medium-bodied palate. The French oak is just a little over the top.HK$9,130.00 -
The Haan Prestige Shiraz 2003 exemplifies Barossa Valley’s exceptional winemaking heritage. Crafted by the esteemed Haan family, renowned for their commitment to sustainable viticulture and artisanal techniques, this vintage hails from meticulously handpicked grapes grown on ancient vines in the Eden Valley subregion. Fermented in traditional stainless steel vats to preserve the Shiraz’s vibrant character, it undergoes an extended maceration, extracting profound tannins and rich colour. The wine is then aged for 18 months in premium French oak barrels, imparting elegant spice and subtle vanilla notes that complement its ripe blackberry and plum flavours. The 2003 vintage, celebrated for its optimal growing conditions, delivers a velvety texture and a lingering, sophisticated finish. Renowned in esteemed wine publications, the Haan Prestige Shiraz 2003 stands as a testament to Haan’s unwavering pursuit of excellence, making it a distinguished addition to any fine wine collection.

The 2018 Hacienda Monasterio, the wine that was previously labeled as Crianza, is a blend of 80% Tinto Fino, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot and 2% Malbec selected from the 100 hectares of their organically certified vineyard in the west part of Ribera del Duero. It had a traditional fermentation, destemmed and in 8,000-liter stainless steel tanks (a change from the 20,000-liter vats used in 2016) with indigenous yeasts, and it matured for 18 months in French oak barrels, 25% new. This wine represents the character of the property, including all the grapes. It's still a little young, with a creamy twist, a little biscuity with hints of cereals, juicy and with tannins but with balance. This is a vintage that has great balance and freshness, but right now it's a little too oaky for me—but it should develop nicely in bottle. They are now in the process of replacing the Merlot with Malbec, because they think Malbec can work well in the Ribera del Duero. 220,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2020.HK$755.00 -
(6x75cl) 2019Wine Advocate (94)
The 2019 Hacienda Monasterio is floral, aromatic and precise, showing good but contained ripeness, with 15% alcohol. It's a similar blend as in previous years—80% Tinto Fino, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot and 2% Malbec. This is the first vintage they used their new 10,000-liter oak vat, so there are more lots fermented separately and then blended to create this cuvée that shows very good balance, juiciness, concentration, structure and power but with freshness and balance. Their idea is to gradually replace the Merlot with Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, but that's going to be a slow process. They have 12 different soils classified on the property, and in 2019 they selected different soils for each wine, something that was not done in 2017; there will be more changes in this direction in the future. 182,666 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2021.HK$2,245.00 -
(6x75cl) 2011Wine Advocate (93)
I tasted three breathtaking wines, starting with the 2011 Crianza which is, year in, year out, one of the best crianzas from Ribera del Duero. It is a blend of mostly Tempranillo with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot and 2% Malbec, and I wonder if the combination of grapes has something to do with the extra dimension and complexity that I often find in this wine. The vineyards are planted on the chalky slopes of this chateau-style winery which is surrounded by vineyards outside the village of Pesquera de Duero. The same time as some 6% of the whole cluster began going into the fermentation vats, also started using around 10% 500-liter barrels for the aging of the wine. For Sisseck, 2011 marks the end of an era, the end of high alcohol, but it all comes from the work in the vineyards improving on the balance, adapting yields to the character of the vintage. It has an explosive nose, with ripe, hedonistic aromas and the wood perfectly integrated into the wine. The palate is only medium to full-bodied, dense, glyceric, with polished tannins, and clean, with delineated flavors, not heavy and with the alcohol perfectly integrated and unnoticable. This is a big Ribera which feels light on its feet; a gentle giant, a triumph for the vintage. A curious 166,600 bottles were produced in 2011. Drink now-2019.HK$1,955.00 -

This superb Reserva from the textbook, cooler climate 2016 vintage is one of the best young wines I have ever tasted from Carlos de la Fuente and Peter Sisseck. Marrying Tinto Fino with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in 40% new wood, this comes from a parcel with a very high limestone content, which adds freshness on these warm slopes. Scented, graceful and refined, it has cassis and blackberry fruit, graceful tannins, subtle wood and a long, tapering finish. Exceptional winemaking. 2023-32HK$3,695.00 -

Somehow I didn't taste the 2017 Hacienda Monasterio, but I did taste the 2017 Reserva, which is quite impressive for such a challenging year in Ribera del Duero. They suffered less from the frost on the property, which is quite warm and usually frost-free. The wine has a seductive nose that combines raspberries and cranberries with herbs and flowers. It's ripe at 15% alcohol, but it does not show heat or alcohol. This is 80% to 82% Tinto Fino and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon that matured in barrel for some 20 months. It's medium to full-bodied, juicy, rich and velvety, with fine, chalky tannins. The wine really transcends the challenges of the vintage and delivers more than I expected. 35,000 bottles produced.HK$2,895.00 -

(78% tempranillo and 22% cabernet sauvignon; aged for 20 months in small French oak barrels): Deep ruby. Intense aromas of blackcurrant, cherry compote and licorice, with a suggestion of sexy oak spices. Supple and broad but lively, with ripe, sweet dark berry flavors lifted by juicy acidity. Smooth, sweet and seamless on the finish, which hangs on with outstanding tenacity and youthful tannic grip.HK$11,140.00 -

The top shelf expression of Hacienda Monasterio, the Reserva Especial is not produced every year and could be the equivalent of a Gran Reserva. It is typically a Temperanillo-dominated blend complemented with Cabernet Sauvignon. Quantities may vary but for the 2015 vintage, only 4,000 bottles were produced. Although sitting in bottle for years now, the estate doesn’t allow anyone to taste the wine until it's actually released, which is usually a few months later in the calendar year than its younger siblings.HK$5,500.00 -

Bouncing back from the fires in 2019 - and then some - this is the best young Pinot Noir release I've tasted from Hamilton Russell. Representing a subtle shift in style towards greater perfume and fruit, this is a detailed, finely judged blend of clones 113, 115 and 667, with svelte tannins, tidy acidity, rose petal top notes and skilfully integrated oak.HK$2,600.00 -

This wine comes from a site with iron-rich soils, resulting in structure and savory aromas. Made with Dijon clones (113, 115, 667 and 777), the Hamilton Russell Vineyards 2023 Hemel-En-Aarde Valley Pinot Noir has dark fruit (blackcurrant), grilled rosemary and a ferrous note of rusty nail. Clones with bigger clusters are used because the site tends to produce small bunches naturally. Anywhere from 10% to 15% whole-cluster fruit is used, depending on vintage. The wine undergoes a wild fermentation, and if the winemaking team does inoculate, they use yeast from the property. Cap management has changed over the years from twice daily punch-downs to a gentle approach resembling a tea infusion, with wine poured over the cap. There is a heavier note to this wine that is specific to this site and builds a robust fruit profile.HK$1,740.00 -

The 2018 Albis combines 70% Cabernet Sauvignon with 30% Carménère aged for 18 months in new French barrels. An intense garnet red in color, the nose offers dark fruit such as blackberry and blackcurrant with attractive hints of cedar, bay leaf and sour cherry. With the terse tannins one finds in the region, it begins expansively before tightening up a little to deliver intense flavor followed by a lactic, long and fruity finish. A complex and nuanced wine.HK$1,865.00 -

Wine Advocate (100)
What can I say about the 1994? I have tasted the wine for three consecutive years, and each time it satisfied all of my requirements for perfection. The opaque purple color is followed by spectacular aromatics that soar from the glass, offering up celestial levels of black currants, minerals, smoked herbs, cedar wood, coffee, and pain grille. In the mouth, this seamless legend reveals full body, and exquisite layers of phenomenally pure and rich fruit, followed by a 40+ second finish. While accessible, the 1994 begs for another 5-7 years of cellaring. It should easily last for 30+ years. Every possible jagged edge - acidity, alcohol, tannin, and wood - is brilliantly intertwined in what seems like a diaphanous format. What is so extraordinary about this large-scaled wine, with its dazzling display of aromatics and prodigious flavors and depth, is that it offers no hint of heaviness or coarseness. Harlan's 1994 comes close to immortality in the glass.HK$183,625.00 -

The opaque purple-colored 1996 Harlan Estate reveals extraordinary intensity, a spicy, black currant, tobacco, cedar, and fruit cake-scented bouquet, full body, a texture oozing with glycerin and concentrated fruit, and moderate tannin in the blockbuster finish. It is one of the most concentrated and complete red wines one could hope to taste. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2030.HK$39,890.00
