Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (100)
A storrming, stonking Napa wine, playing at the top of its game in 2019. Somehow takes the power and concentration of Napa but makes it full of texture, life, light and shade. Espresso, liqourice root, cocoa bean, cassis, cranberry, black cherry, cold ash and crayon. Hard not to fall in love with, nothing overdone, everything in its place. Winemaker Todd DeVincezi, consultant winemaker Philippe Bascaules. All aged in French oak barrels, 75% new.HK$6,280.00 -

Even better than I recall from barrel, the nose of Inglenook's 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Rubicon (which includes a small amount of Cabernet Franc and an even smaller portion of Merlot) emerges from the glass as a harmonious melody of baking spices—cinnamon, vanilla and cardamom—and ripe cherries. Showing terrific intensity and a plentitude of fine-grained tannins, this medium to full-bodied wine should age well for at least two decades.HK$8,100.00 -

Marc Kent's field blend from vineyards over 50 years old comprising Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Barroca and Rufete, aged 16 months in used French barriques. Deep purplish crimson. Pretty ripe and luscious on both nose and palate with smoother tannins than many Douro reds – there is still some tannin but it's very ripe. Lots of work involved in this feat? Yet it definitely tastes of the hot stones of the Douro. Well done! Really rather gorgeous already. Clean, fresh, appetising finish. A cheerful wine that comes out of the glass to metaphorically lick your face affectionately. Bravo!HK$1,230.00 -

Now the flagship of this estate, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape is 75% Grenache and the rest Cinsault, Mourvedre, and a little Syrah. Sporting a deep ruby/purple hue, it offers a beautiful array of black raspberry and darker cherry fruit as well as lots of graphite, chalky minerality, Provençal garrigue, and spice. Beautiful on the palate as well, this medium to full-bodied effort has a layered, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, rock-solid underlying structure and concentration, building tannins, and a gorgeous finish. It needs to be forgotten for 2-4 years (although it certainly offers incredible pleasure even today) and will keep for two decades. Tasted twice.HK$8,200.00 -

Reminding me of the 2020, the 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape is based on 60% Grenache, 16% each Mourvèdre and Cinsault, and the rest Syrah. Its medium ruby hue is followed by a gorgeous perfume of black raspberries, white pepper, Provençal garrigue, and crushed stone-like minerality. With medium to full-bodied richness, a seamless, layered mouthfeel, and ripe, polished, yet building tannins, it's an absolute gem in the vintage that will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and cruise over the following decade or more.HK$3,370.00 -

The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Collezione De Marchi tasted from magnum, is glorious. Dark cherry, blackberries, melted road tar and licorice are some of the many notes that wrap around the palate in a dark, brooding wine endowed with tons of structure. At the time, 1997 was considered a very warm vintage, and it was, but those conditions are pretty much the norm these days. From magnum, the 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon remains a baby. To be sure, the style is ripe and flashy, but it all works. What a wine!HK$1,365.00 -

There are very few producers in Tuscany who can produce Cabernet Sauvignon that is intensely varietal and also deeply regional. Paolo De Marchi is one of those growers. His 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon exudes tremendous resonance from start to finish. Blackberry jam, cloves, menthol, tar, licorice and grilled herbs all flesh out in this powerful, seductive wine. French oak adds volume and texture, but is also used with a deft hand. I can't wait to taste the 2007 with more bottle age. Today, it is impressively youthful and vibrant. A recent complete vertical back to the inaugural 1985 found the wines all aged with sublime grace. Make no mistake about it, this is one of the great wines of Tuscany and Italy.HK$9,150.00 -

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Collezione De Marchi is magnificent. Violets, smoke, plums and cassis jump from the glass in a stunning wine. All I can say is the 2010 is incredible. Just bottled one month ago, the 2010 shows no hard edges, incredibly expressive aromatics and beautifully delineated fruit. The 2010 isn’t a huge wine, but rather one built on exceptional finesse and elegance. It is one of the great wines of what has turned out to be a great Tuscan vintage.HK$9,150.00 -

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Collezione Privata is superb. A delicate, nuanced wine in this vintage, the Cabernet Sauvignon speaks in hushed tones. Silky tannins and highly expressive aromatics add to an impression of total finesse. In many vintages, the Cabernet can be quite big, but not in 2013. This is a brilliant showing from Isole and proprietor Paolo De Marchi.HK$1,120.00 -

A regal wine, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Collezione Privata from Isole e Olena soars out of the glass with tremendous aromatic and palate intensity. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2014 has so much to offer. Once again, De Marchi crafted a Cabernet Sauvignon that exudes character. Today, the 2014 is vivid but also intensely saline and clenched. Another few years in bottle should do the trick. This fruit was brought in during the last week of October and first week of November, quite late, even by the standards of the year.HK$6,130.00 -

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is among the finest Cabernet Sauvignons in Italy. High altitude sites in Barberino yield a distinctly mid-weight, elegant, savory Cabernet that is all about reserve. Dark plum, espresso, licorice, menthol and sage start to emerge with a bit of air, but the 2016 is a wine that demands cellaring. Over the years, I have had the good fortune to taste every vintage of the Isole e Olena Cabernet. It is one of the great under the radar wines of Tuscany. The 2016 takes its place with the very finest editions.HK$4,105.00 -
(6x75cl) 2018The Wine Independent (97)
This 2018 Isole e Olena Collezione Privata Cabernet Sauvignon is an opaque velvety color with a very narrow rim. On the nose it is very clear and bright with clearly delineated aromas of cassis and blackcurrant and a gentle, typically Cabernet Franc green-leafy note against a light background of fragrant rose. This wine shows yet another beautiful array of aromas with range and nuance. On the palate there is a lovely texture with plenty of concentration of flavor without being heavy and edged with fine tannins. This wine carries its 15% alcohol seamlessly. Another beautiful wine with gracefulness and charm.HK$4,560.00 -

Incredibly well-crafted red. Complex aromas of raspberries, vanilla and coffee. Medium-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a long, silky finish. A beauty. Best after 2004. 4,250 cases made. -JSHK$2,785.00 -

The 2004 Cepparello has fleshed out beautifully since I last tasted it. Dark raspberries, flowers, licorice and spices blossom from the glass as the wine opens up over time. When it was young the 2004 was a much more linear wine, but since then it has put on a lot of weight. Today, the 2004 comes across as a modern day 1982 because of its balance of aromatics, fruit and structure.HK$5,665.00 -
(1x75cl) 2011Vinous (95)
The 2011 Cepparello is wonderfully aromatic, lifted and precise. Sweet rose petal, mint, crushed raspberries, cinnamon and kirsch grace the palate in a silky, aromatically expressive wine endowed with pure pedigree. Paolo De Marchi added a dollop of Trebbiano to give the 2011 a little extra freshness that the vintage itself could not provide. The white Trebbiano was once used widely in the production of Chianti Classico. Today, it is rarely used in this way.HK$770.00 -

The 2012 Cepparello is just as compelling as it has always been. Sweet, ample and generous from the outset, the 2012 shows all of its pedigree, even at this early stage. Radiant fruit and exquisite aromatics make a strong opening statement as the wine fleshes out in the glass. Ample, creamy and super-expressive, the 2012 is shaping up to be a superb Cepparello. The only thing the 2012 needs is time. An up and down year with hot temperatures in July and early August, followed by rain in September forced DeMarchi to be especially selective and bottle only the best lots. Production is down to 30,000 bottles from 36,000 in 2013 and 32,400 in 2011.HK$3,850.00 -

Hands down beautiful, The 2013 Cepparello is a creation of stunning elegance and balance. A pure expression of Sangiovese, this wine undergoes a sophisticated oak regime that sees ageing in various barrel sizes and barrique of various ages. It lives 18 months of its life in French and 3% American oak before being released. This vintage (that is cooler compared to 2012 and 2011) delivers an exceptionally soft and mellow bouquet with slightly sweet sensations of ripe cherry and fragrant blue flower. Soft tones of spice and cinnamon bring up the rear. The wine is medium to full in terms of body weight, and the finish is driven by cool tones of balsam and menthol herb. The 2013 Cepparello is one of my favorite wines of the vintage.HK$3,850.00 -
