Wine Advocate (90-92)
The 2016 Marsannay Clos du Roy was cropped at a reasonable 35 hectoliters per hectare with no problem of frost or mildew. It has a forward and quite impressive bouquet of raspberry, cranberry and a touch of blackberry, well defined if fairly straightforward. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannin, a nice touch of bitter cherry to counter that ripe, lush red berry fruit with a tang of cracked black pepper towards the finish. The 2023 Marsannay Clos du Roy had been racked one month before my visit and will continue aging in larger 600-liter barrels. This is understated, very poised and focused on the nose that unfolds succinctly in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, satisfying weight and a focused, quite structured finish. Maybe it doesn't quite have the ambition of the previous vintage, yet this is still a top-notch Marsannay.HK$1,650 - HK$2,015

The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)
Rich deep purple, I do like the nose here. Laurent says it did not show so well earlier and is now only coming in to itself. He is looking at longer ageing. Huge stuffing to this yet entirely balanced. On the cusp of red and black, a little bit spicy and with excellent length. Tasted: November 2021HK$2,620.00 -

The 2021 Marsannay Es Chezots has a lively, vibrant bouquet with pure Dorset plum and bilberry scents, light iris petal aromas. Very detailed. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiselled tannins, quite chalky in texture, perhaps a little compact but I feel this has something up its sleeve for later. Fournier's spiciest Marsannay. A cooler and airier nose somewhat grudgingly displays its array of various dark berries, especially black raspberry, violet and a hint of wet stone character. The fleshy, rich and nicely textured medium weight flavors exhibit even more minerality on the youthfully austere, compact and serious finale. This balanced effort is textbook Es Chezots and should repay 8 to 12 years of keeping.HK$9,587.60 -

The 2023 Marsannay Les Longeroies has a sensual bouquet with vivid red berry fruit, raspberry and wild strawberry, wilted rose petal and crushed stone emerging with time. It has exquisite delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant, fine-boned tannins. This has more complexity than the Clos du Roy, fanning out wonderfully on the finish. The 2019 Marsannay Le Chapitre comprises a blend of 15- and 75-year-old vines. Interestingly, Laurent Fournier remarks that the younger vines performed better due to the superior rootstock. It has a gorgeous bouquet with dark cherries, blackcurrant and light violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very velvety in texture with an almost crystalline finish. Here the nose displays that peculiar kind of reduction called bourgeon de cassis, or cassis bud, that crowds out more interesting notes. The 2019 Marsannay "Trois Terres" Vieilles Vignes has a dense bouquet with blackberry, Japanese nori and almost briny aromas. It gradually opens with more crushed stone scents coming through. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins, fleshy to the point where it disguises the structure underneath, leading to a tarry and very sustained finish. Just about as good as Marsannay gets. Superb.HK$2,925.00 -

An agreeably fresh nose freely offers up its array of spicy and perfumed red berries, soft earth and a floral whiff. There is fine mid-palate density to the seductively textured, even succulent, medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the lightly austere, firm and balanced finale. (6x150cl) 2020Savour the elegance of Jean Francois Ganevat Cuvee Madelon Nature 2020, a masterstroke from the Jura region of Eastern France. This exceptionally expressive wine is the epitome of Jean Francois Ganevat's prowess, a producer renowned for his meticulous biodynamic practices and philosophies. The Cuvee Madelon Nature 2020, made from Gamay grapes, boasts of rigorous, low-intervention vinification perfected over centuries.
Coming from a line of fourteen generations of winemakers, Ganevat's expertise and commitment towards precision is palpable throughout this bottle. Matured in Burgundy barrels with no additional sulphites or filtering, this wine perfectly captures its terroir's distinct minerality. An intriguing blend of earthy aromas and tangy red fruit freshness mark its unique bouquet, with light, playful tannins creating a harmonious balance on the palate. The finish is delightful and lingering, symbolising the time-honoured winemaking traditions of the Ganevat estate.
