I was blown away by the 2018 Hermitage from barrel, and it unquestionably doesn't disappoint from bottle. Reminding me slightly of the 2009, it possesses off-the-charts richness and depth, but like all great wines, stays pure, balanced, and light on its feel. Extraordinary notes of cassis, blue fruits, graphite, violets, and flowers define the bouquet, and this full-bodied, layered, multi-dimensional beauty has ripe tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. This is pure Hermitage magic. Given its extravagant richness and texture, it should be relatively accessible in just a handful of years yet evolve for three decades or more.HK$7,535.00 -

(1x75cl) 2019Jeb Dunnuck (98+)
A powerhouse of a wine that flirts with perfection, the 2019 Hermitage reveals a dense purple hue as well as an extraordinary bouquet of sweet blue fruits supported by notes of crushed stone, lead pencil, leather, and ground pepper, with hints of flowers in the background. Full-bodied, stunningly pure, and massively concentrated, yet with riveting precision and elegance, it needs to be hidden in the back of the cellar for a decade and will evolve for 30, 40, if not 50 years. Tasting the trilogy of the 2018, 2019, and 2020 over the coming decades will be the equivalent of wine nirvana.HK$4,980.00 -

Tasted out of tank, the 2020 Hermitage ranks with the legendary wines from this address. Reminding me of a slightly more elegant version of the 2010, it's a deep, inky hued effort revealing utterly classic Hermitage aromatics of darker cassis and blue fruits as well as a liquid rock-like sense of minerality. Young and primordial, it still has incredible purity and freshness in its aromatics. Full-bodied and powerful on the palate, this gorgeous wine is going to shine with just 4-6 years of bottle age yet age with the best of them. I would not be surprised to see this beauty have 40, 50, or even 60 years of life.HK$9,705.00 -

Decanter (96)
A tasting of the constituent lieux-dits before blending was as instructive as ever. Péléat was smooth, silky and red-fruited with good acidity; Beaumes slightly meatier, a little less concentrated than a typical year, but with good tannic drive; L'Ermite was serious, dry and mineral; Bessards very strict, with tight, rigid tannins. The final blend is likely to produce a structural rather than generous style of Hermitage, with tannins that will need a long time in bottle to settle. This will be ascetic in youth, then complex and textural with age.HK$2,355.00 -

Showing beautifully (if not eyes-roll-back-in-your-head good), the 2022 Hermitage offers sun-kissed blackberry and cassis fruits intermixed with sweet herbs, graphite, crushed stones, and incense on the nose. It's full-bodied, has a beautiful core of fruit and firm, classic, granite-inspired structure and tannins. This is an ultra-classic, gorgeous Hermitage from this incredible family that will see its 50th birthday in fine form. It reminds me slightly of the 1998. Drink 2028-2072.HK$12,555.00 -
Vinous (93)
Deep ruby. Vibrant, sharply focused aromas of fresh dark berries, potpourri and licorice along with a smoky mineral overtone. Juicy and vibrant on the palate, offering concentrated boysenberry and bitter cherry flavors that become sweeter and spicier with air. Fine-grained tannins give shape to the impressively long, mineral-driven finish, which leaves behind sexy floral pastille and spicecake notes.HK$1,165.00 -

(made with 25 percent whole clusters) Inky ruby. Pungent, spice-accented aromas of ripe dark berries, candied violet, licorice and smoky minerals. Juicy and expansive on the palate, offering pliant black and blue fruit and floral pastille flavors that are complemented and lifted by a jolt of peppery spices. Becomes sweeter and deeper with air, with no loss of energy, and finishes sappy and very long; smooth tannins add shape and grip.HK$7,345.00 -

Inky ruby. An expansive bouquet evokes ripe black and blue fruits, candied flowers and smoky bacon, along with suggestions of olive and pipe tobacco. Densely packed, spice-accented blackberry and cherry liqueur flavors show fine delineation and energetic lift thanks to a core of juicy acidity. A mineral nuance arrives with air and carries through a long, velvety finish framed by round, well-knit tannins.HK$860.00 -
Jancis Robinson (18.5)
Sample 1: Dardouille. Beautiful black-olive and smoke-tinged nose – granitic graphite notes, fantastic depth of fruit and fine silky tannins with a dollop of spice. Sample 2: Le Clos. Stacks of black pepper, menthol and clove showing on the nose. The palate is densely concentrated but with real energy, freshness and vibrancy. Sample 3: Chaillés. Beautiful whole-bunch aromas of lapsang souchong, smoke, ash and five spice. Fantastic vibrant freshness and sculpted fine tannins. Sample 4: Bachasson. A nose packed full of black-olive tapenade and Lagavulin peaty smoke. The palate has a floral tinge with white pepper and tannins that are fine and silky. There's such finesse here!HK$1,055.00 -

(1x75cl) 2020Vinous (96-97)
As with the 2020 L'Hermitage, I tasted this wine in its components, shortly before blending and bottling. This vintage is highly successful at Chave, and this wine, which would qualify as the gateway bottling made from estate fruit, looks to be outstanding, with juicy, spice-laced red and blue fruit character of noteworthy freshness, plus strong florality and mineral drive. I was also struck by the fineness of the tannins, which will likely make the final wine deceptively approachable on release. Don't be fooled - this wine has a long and enviable track record for rewarding patience.HK$830.00 -

Saturated violet color. Smoky, mineral-accented black and blue fruit scents are complicated by olive paste, licorice and floral nuances that build in the glass. Juicy and energetic in the mouth, offering vibrant blackberry, boysenberry, candied violet and smoky bacon flavors that become sweeter with air. The floral and mineral notes come back strong on the penetrating finish, which shows outstanding persistence and fine-grained, harmonious tannins.HK$900.00 -

Full violet color. Heady, spice-accented dark berry, cola and floral pastille scents show excellent clarity and pick up a mineral nuance with aeration. Vinous (89)
Deep ruby-red. Very ripe aromas of raspberry, cherry, violet and game. Dense, ripe and sweet, with fruit currently overshadowed by its strong oak component. Finishes with firm but suave tannins and very good length. This is very attractive red wine, but I'm not sure I would identify it blind as Cornas.HK$7,535.00 -

Saturated ruby-red. Very ripe aromas of slightly stewed red and black fruits. Then bright and fresh in the middle palate, with youthfully clenched currant and oak flavors. The finish shows some tarry oak and elevated wood tannins. Offers good intensity and texture but is there real soul?HK$10,820.00 -

This inky, intensely plummy Syrah balances rich, pulsating black-fruit flavors against lip-smacking cassis and accents of tapenade, charcuterie and blood. Sourced from 90-year-old vines and aged 22 months in oak (15% new), the penetrating wine is framed by fine, firm tannins and lingering notes of vanilla, chocolate and earth.HK$4,490.00 -
(6x75cl) 2007Vinous (89-92)
Deep red with a bright rim. Peppery redcurrant and cherry aromas are complemented by baking spices and clove. Brisk and focused, with tangy red berry flavors, gentle tannins and good mineral snap. Nervy for a Cornas, with very good finishing grip and clarity.HK$1,975.00
