The 2019 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru comes from 0.14-hectare of vine. It has a well defined and more mineral driven bouquet compared to the Champans, the 50% new oak lending a little sheen. The palate is medium-bodied with silky smooth tannins and a fine bead of acidity. One of the purest Volnays that I have tasted at the domaine in many many years, this is a small production of two barrels, but try and grab a bottle.HK$860.00 -

The 2021 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru was reduced to a single barrel for the first time ever. It does not quite have the complexity or terroir expression of the Champans on the nose, a little stoic and distant. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit and fine acidity, plus a healthy sprinkling of white pepper and sage towards the persistent finish. Not quite the élan of the Champans, yet it pulls together nicely.HK$920.00 -

Due to be bottled the following week, the 2013 Volnay 1er Cru les Champans has a flattering bouquet of redcurrant, cranberry and pomegranate fruit interlaced with undergrowth aromas that lend it a slightly rustic feel. The palate is medium-bodied with red cherries, orange rind and a hint of marmalade. It needs just a little more harmony on the finish but that should come with bottle age. The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Champans has an expressive bouquet for this habitually taciturn domaine (at least in its youth). This is bestowed with a comparatively opulent bouquet with rounded red cherry and wild strawberry scents, almost Santenots-like in style. The palate is supple and rounded on the entry, belying the structure that lies underneath. Yet there is fine grip on the finish and it lingers long and tenderly in the mouth. The 2016 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has a wonderful bouquet of vivacious red cherry, wild strawberry, pressed rose petals and touches of sage and thyme. The palate is very well balanced with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity, and crescendoing gently to a slightly meaty, delineated, long finish. The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru les Fremiets, reduced to seven barrels this year (40% one- or two-year-old oak), offers attractive, pure, raspberry and crushed strawberry scents on the nose, floral scents (rose petals) sneaking out from under the coves with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, lithe tannin. I adore the harmony and precision of this Fremiets, not a powerful or flamboyant Volnay, but just Pinot Noir shimmering on the tongue.
