Vinous (91)
(from a single vineyard on soil rich in sandstone): Bright dark red. Scented aromas of raspberry, lavender, tree bark, pepper and spices; I would have guessed that this contained some Mourvèdre. At once brambly and a bit high-toned in the mouth, offering a very suave grain and lovely inner-mouth floral/peppery lift to its raspberry and cranberry fruit flavors. Finishes with smooth tannins and piquant floral and spice notes.HK$5,310.00 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (92+)
The 2015 Syrah Topside has a lot of reduction on the nose, and this suppresses the brightness and fruit expression. The palate is better with succulent tannins, a keen line of acidity and an attractive black pepper note on the finish. But it feels "hemmed in" by the reduction. Note that it does respond to aeration and develops more freshness and vigor. I just think this needed a longer decant and if so, would achieve a higher score. Tasted blind at the 10-Year-On horizontal in London.HK$750.00 -
(6x75cl) 2017Vinous (94)
The 2017 Syrah Single Vineyard Series Topside is slightly brighter and more vivid on the nose compared to the Steepside with red cherries, crushed strawberry and just a light dab of dark chocolate. The oak is neatly integrated here. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy opening, very well balanced with a judicious touch of white pepper that becomes more prominent on the finish.HK$2,500.00 -

Syrah lovers could spend a long time discussing the relative merits of Alex Starey's single parcel Syrahs. I have a very slight preference for Topside in 2018, partly because its cooler terroir on Stellenbosch Mountain was well suited to the drought conditions of the vintage. Restrained, focused and built to age in bottle, it has sage and oregano perfume, savoury tannins, refreshing acidity and minerality and flavours of plum, raspberry, red cherry and tobacco leaf.HK$2,695.00 -

This is my favorite among the four Syrahs presented by Richard Kershaw. The 2019 Groenland Bokkeveld Shale SH 9c Deconstructed Syrah has an especially bright core of red and purple fruits that are framed by fragrant tones of heritage rose, blue flower and toasted redwood or Swedish sauna. There is an ashy component and a metallic dusting, but the wine is tight and nicely structured throughout.HK$790.00 -

The 2016 Syrah Deconstructed Lake District Cartref SH22 has a lovely bouquet of brambly red fruit, slightly confit yet fresh. Subtle Provençal herbs, marmalade and fennel scents become ferrous with time. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy opening, crisp acidity and bright red fruit. The slightly medicinal, camphor-tinged finish is almost Pinot-like and maintains delineation. Excellent. Tasted blind at the South Africa Ten Years On tasting in London.HK$3,895.00 -

The 2005 Shiraz “Attunga 1865” is sourced from ungrafted vines planted in the Clare Valley in 1865. It spent 25 months in 100% new French oak hogsheads and was bottled unfined and unfiltered. Opaque purple/black, it reveals an ethereal bouquet of crushed rocks, acacia flowers, espresso, mocha, black cherry, and blackberry. This leads to a powerful, intense, yet elegant wine with a very long, seamless finish. This beautifully balanced effort will excite tasters over the next 25 years. Inky purple. An exotic bouquet presents black and blue fruit preserves, vanilla, licorice and potpourri. Sweet, deeply pitched blueberry and cherry-vanilla flavors stain the palate and gain spiciness with aeration. This sweet, seamless wine should be left to rest for at least another five to seven years and probably much longer.HK$5,530.00 -

A mesh of premium vineyard fruit and an 18 month passage across quality French oak, this is a salubrious, full-bodied and glossy wine. A deep crimson verging on opaque. A firm bulwark of coffee grind-mocha tannins prolongs scents of violet, blue to black berry persuasions and crushed rock, long and far across the palate. The tannins define, etch and shape this, keeping it from an OTT persuasion. Just. Very good, if hedonism is your cup of tea.HK$5,000.00
