Vinous (89-92)
(80% vendange entier): Good dark red. Purple fruits, saline minerality and bitter chocolate on the nose, lifted by a violet topnote. Juicy, precise and intensely flavored; this has the energy and fruit to support the stem component. Much fresher and more delineated than the Charmes, finishing with good mineral lift.HK$860.00 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis Aux Chezeaux 1er Cru contains 100% whole bunches fruit this year. That comes through on the nose with more tangible sous-bois and black pepper elements, quite open with dusky black fruit and black truffle. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very lithe in the mouth, the whole bunches are tangible but not overriding fruit or terroir expression. Delicate touches of cracked black pepper and clove line the finish that exerts a gentle but insistent grip. Excellent.HK$5,390.00 -

Vinous (88)
Ruby-red. Complex, expressive nose combines tarry black fruits, licorice, roasted herbs, underbrush and brown spices, plus oak notes of chocolate and mocha. Lush, suave, warm and very ripe but not roasted or cooked. Quite rich, sweet and chocolatey in the middle, but not quite as sweet as the Faconnieres. Finishes with building, oak-powered tannins and just a hint of raisin.HK$8,720.00 -

Dark and lush, revealing black cherry, blackberry and chocolate, but also mineral flavors. Ripe and fresh, this is underscored by fine-grained tannins. The finish echoes black currant and spice notes. Very supple. Best from 2011 through 2023. -BSHK$9,665.00 -

Melted road tar, incense, licorice and black stone fruits are some of the notes that emerge from the 2011 Clos de La Roche. Even with all of its obvious size and heft, the Clos de La Roche remains exceptionally elegant. Layers of dark, balsamic-infused fruit build to the intense, enveloping finish. The 2011 was vinified with 50% whole clusters and aged in 50% new oak.HK$20,410.00 -
(6x75cl) 2012Vinous (93-95)
Today, the 2012 Clos de la Roche comes across as tight and very much closed in on itself. Cherry pit, plum, flowers, spices and iron emerge over time, but only with great reluctance. The tannins are firm, but there is plenty of depth and pure resonance just waiting to emerge over time. A dense, authoritative finish rounds things out in style The Clos de la Roche was done with 60% whole clusters and it is going to need time to fully come together.HK$14,200.00 -

Wine Advocate (94-96)
The 2015 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru comes from 0.30-hectare in the Montluisants area supplemented by some purchased fruit from 72-year-old vines in the lieu-dit Les Chenevrières. It has a very pure and powerful bouquet with layers of small dark cherries, blueberry and violet aromas, a little richness of the growing season showing through via a touch of glycerin. The palate is medium-bodied with a bit if sinew on the entry. This dovetails into a structured mid-palate with a pinch of white pepper lingering on the finish that has a real peacock's tail of flavors, reinforcing its grand crus pedigree (just in case.) This is a sublime expression of the vineyard from Virgile Lignier.HK$9,245.00 -
Vinous (92+)
(30% new oak, or roughly the same percentage as all of the 2015 crus here): Bright dark red. Very sexy, subtly complex scents of dark raspberry, black cherry, licorice, coffee and mocha, with suggestions of liqueur-like ripeness. Densely packed and thick, with subtle sweetness supported by ripe acidity. Quite juicy and savory in the mouth, then firmly tannic but not dry on the very long, rising back end. The yield here was a normal 42 hectoliters per hectare. This wine struck me as a bit New World in character when I first tasted it from barrel, but today it's clearly communicating its Morey terroir. (Lignier did not open a bottle of his Clos Saint-Denis, as he has just 140 bottles--plus another 140 for the owner of the vineyard.)HK$9,245.00 -

The 2018 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is a little confit and jammy on the nose, though the fruit is attractive, wild strawberry and raspberry, touches of orange pith. It coheres impressively in the glass despite a touch of reduction. The palate is medium-bodied with chiselled tannins. Plenty of freshness here, saline, vibrant and bright, this fans out gloriously towards the finish with a persistent, spicy, slightly exotic finish that does not detract from typicité. Big things ahead. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.HK$3,870.00 -

The 2019 Clos de La Roche Grand Cru contains 80% whole bunches this year and underwent just a couple of punch-downs. There is a tiny amount of reduction on the nose as I taste it, gradually opening to reveal raspberry, blackcurrant and violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins matched with a very fine bead of acidity. This is a very cohesive and refined Grand Cru with a lilting, carefree finish that belies its inherent complexity and persistent. 80% whole bunch. Really intense black colour with a purple rim. The bouquet does not want to speak quite yet. A little bit of wood, a light herbaceous note from the stems which departs rapidly, but the promise of such intensity. Morello cherries? A crackling freshness on the palate, mineral threads, a superb and classic texture, huge weight. Everything is there. Tasted: December 2021HK$12,355.00 -

(from a .72 ha holding; 50% whole cluster). Here too there is just a whiff of reduction that also stops short of overshadowing the ripe and beautifully layered aromas that are composed by notes of poached plum and a variety of spice elements. I very much like the texture of the delicious medium-bodied flavors that, even if not especially dense, still possess good power and minerality while delivering excellent depth and length on the balanced bitter pit fruit finish that really fans out as it sits on the palate.
