Vinous - Antonio Galloni (100)
The 2020 Pavie Macquin is sensational. Rich, dark and explosive, the 2020 balances the natural richness that is such a signature of the estate with a level of energy and vibrancy I have not seen here in the recent past. The result is a towering, imposing Pavie Macquin that hugely delivers. In this vintage, regisseur Nicolas Thienpont did not use the Cabernet Sauvignon, so the blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, with the Franc lending aromatic presence, energy and depth. Hailing from the venerated Château Beauregard vineyards, a producer with roots that stretch back to the 12th century, this robust and sophisticated red wine is renowned for its deep garnet hue and high-density planting, leading to a notably vibrant, complex flavour profile.
Benefiting from 18 months in oak barrels, the Pavillon Beauregard 2016 reveals stunning notes of ripe dark fruits, leather, and a hint of spice on the nose. The 1982 Pavillon Rouge came with modest expectations since bottles can be variable, yet this is an absolute delight. There is something almost gentle about the nose, well-defined with a touch of sous-bois; the warmth of the summer percolates through and imparts a slight, confit-like note. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity. Whilst it does not have the depth and concentration of the Grand Vin, it is harmonious and smooth, showing little sign of age on the finish.
