Made from a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc, the second wine, the 2009 Reserve de la Comtesse, exhibits notes of forest floor, white chocolate, licorice, black currants and vanillin-infused black cherries. It possesses a sweet, round, generous style given its high glycerin. Both the Reserve de la Comtesse and Pichon Lalande have about 13% alcohol, slightly lower than most Pauillacs achieved in 2009. The 2013 Reserve de La Comtesse is soft, fruity and well-suited to near-term drinking. Dark raspberries, wild flowers and mint are all nicely delineated in the glass. The 2013 shows lovely up-front fruit, with perhaps a bit less mid-palate to fill out the frame, which in turn exposes the slightly under ripe tannins. Dried flowers, crushed raspberries and a gentle hint of spice linger on the close. The blend is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 6% Merlot. Tasted twice.HK$4,905.00 -

A candidate for the second wine of the vintage, the 2019 Pichon Comtesse Reserve is stunning stuff that surpasses the Grand Vins of most châteaux. Pure cassis and darker currants as well as tobacco leaf, lead pencil, and spring flowers all define the bouquet, and it's pure class on the palate, with a seamless, elegant, supple mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. It's one classy Pauillac that I'd be thrilled to drink any time over the coming two decades.HK$4,305.00 -

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (92-94)
The 2021 Réserve de la Comtesse is a seriously great wine in its peer group. Or any peer group. Rich and layered, with no hard edges and compelling balance, the 2021 opens beautifully in the glass. Savory accents run through a core of black cherry and plum fruit, with hints of gravel, spice and leather that develop later. This year's blend includes 14% reserve wine, but that is not especially evident. I don't think I have ever tasted a more refined Réserve de la Comtesse. Superb.HK$2,305.00 -

The 1966 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande has been variable over recent bottles, but this was one of the better examples. The aromatics seems a little timeworn with vestiges of black fruit, rusty piping, tobacco and Earl Grey tea – attractive even if it now lacks some vigour. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins, austere in style yet balanced with just about sufficient freshness. It is not an overly complex Pichon-Lalande and there is some attenuation towards the conservative finish. That said, it is better than the first bottle that was awful...until Nicolas Glumineau realised that the had mistakenly fetched the 1967! Tasted at the château.HK$5,015.00 -

I've been lucky enough to have had the 1982 Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse De Lalande a half dozen times over the past few years and it continues to show magically. Tasted out of a magnum, it has a still lively plum/ruby hue as well as gorgeous Pauillac notes of blackcurrants, smoked earth, cedarwood, pencil lead, and forest floor. It's unquestionably fully mature and in that sweet spot where it has incredible aromatics, beautiful, sweet fruit, no hard edges, and a gorgeous finish. I don't see it falling off a cliff any time soon, yet there's no need to delay gratification either. This is a magical, heavenly Bordeaux I wish every reader could taste.HK$8,720.00 -
