Juicy, energetic and sharply delineated, showing terrific thrust to its dark fruit, licorice and spice flavors. I would have picked this blind as a 2013. This will require at least several years of bottle aging.

Tasted from bottle, the 2016 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Porêts-Saint-Georges is one of Faiveley's most brooding and reserved wines this year, unfurling in the glass with notes of earthy black cherries, cassis, dark chocolate, grilled game bird and rich spices. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a tight-knit core, an abundance of fine but firm structuring tannins and a long, sapid finish. If opened today, this Nuits is better on day two or three, and while it's excellent, it will demand more patience than pretty much any other cuvée in the range.

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Porêts-Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a fine black currant and bilberry bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied with quite robust tannins, not the most elegant NSG that you will find, although there is decent freshness and salinity. Give this 3–5 years to soften its edges.

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a complex, complete bouquet with dark berry fruit, touches of 5-spice and a hint of balsamic. Controlled opulence. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, nicely pitched acidity, harmonious with a slightly peppery, quite nuanced and persistent finish. One of the picks from Faiveley this year. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)

The Les St Georges comes under the negociant label, Joseph Faiveley, as the produce of their own vines is mixed with two other sources, one of which is the Hospices de Nuits. A deep crimson colour. The bouquet is relatively luxurious, a super succulent ripe raspberry, with very good tension behind. This seems very young, but the abundant fruit and the structure are promising. The fruit on the palate is fresher than for the village Nuits. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.

Falesco's top offering is a 100% barrique-aged Merlot, the 2000 Montiano. While it may not equal the quality of the 1999 or 1997, it comes close. The 2000 boasts an opaque purple color in addition to a sumptuous perfume of graphite, blackberries, currants, licorice, and subtle pain grille notes. With great depth, full body, sweet tannin, and a long, layered, elegant finish, it should drink well between 2005-2020. Bravo!

This is an incredible wine that reminds me of the perfect 2000 Barolo Rocche de Falletto. Flowers, spices, leather and animals. Decadent. Dried mushrooms. Then changes to Japanese ginger and lemon peel. Full-bodied but refined and so long. It has layers of fruit and power. So refined. Ripe and intense. Perfect balance and harmony. It will be released in 2016.

Bruno Giacosa, like Bartolo Mascarello, often told me he preferred 1986 to 1985. Of course, 1985 is the vintage that got all the press, while 1986 is remembered for a devastating hailstorm in May that decimated production. Very little wine was made that year, but what was bottled turned out to be quite good, and in some cases, better than that. Sadly, this is not a great bottle of Bruno Giacosa's 1986 Barolo Riserva. The overall impression is of a delicate, lifted, fully mature Barolo. Only the memory of better bottles helps put this one into context, because taken on its own, this is still a very fine bottle of Barolo.
