Vinous (89)

Good full medium red. Complex nose combines red fruits, pepper, smoke and a hint of orange peel. Silky, suave and perfumed; not especially primary but quite stylish and pliant. Finishes with distinctly suaver tannins than the examples from Nuits-Saint-Georges and good aromatic lift.

Impeccably superior and boldly expressive, the Les Angelots de Villemaurine 2015 is a supreme embodiment of the Saint-Émilion wine region in Bordeaux France. Produced by a small, elite property that stretches merely over 2.12 hectares, the vineyard's dedication to artisanal winemaking echoes in every sip of this wine. The soil, predominantly clay and limestone, nourishes the50-year-old Merlot vines, contributing to the wine's distinct Bold and concentrated character.

The vinification in thermo-regulated stainless steel vats, followed by a maturation in French oak barrels for 18 months, perfection is undoubtedly achieved. The Les Angelots de Villemaurine 2015 shimmers with deep ruby hues, delivering powerful notes of red and black fruits, intertwined with subtle undertones of sweet spice and licorice. Its rich, velvety tannins gracefully melt away to reveal a well-structured, persistent finish; a wonderful testament to its Grand Cru Classé status. Experience the Les Angelots de Villemaurine 2015, and immerse yourself in an enthralled journey through a classic Bordeaux vintage masterpiece.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (93)

(from 80-year-old vines planted on thin clay soil over hard limestone): Full bright ruby. Medicinal black fruits and chocolate on the nose. Dense, plush and deep, with very ripe dark berry and chocolate flavors enlivened by chewy minerality. Can't quite match Le Carre for lift but this is every bit as concentrated and comes across as sweeter. Finishes with strong, building tannins and terrific length.

Vinous - Ian D'Agata (92-95)

(83% merlot and 17% cabernet franc; 3.46 pH; 14.7 % alcohol) Medium dark ruby. Fruity, pure aromas of raspberry, graphite, white pepper and violet. At once rich and linear, offering a wonderfully vibrant expression of raspberry, red cherry and graphite. The long, sweet finish shows a steely, peppery quality. This wine comes from 80-year-old vines situated on very thin clay over hard limestone, which survived the frost of 1956. I like this wine's purity and the fact that the cabernet franc, even though compromising only a small part of the blend, makes its presence felt.

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (95)

The 2015 Les Astéries is a wine of pure and total allure. Much more satisfying from bottle than it was from barrel, the 2015 marries the natural intensity of the year and Jonathan Maltus's personal imprint with energy - a combination that dazzles from the very first taste. The dark cherry, espresso, mocha and licorice flavors bristle with power. Sumptuous in feel, but with good savory and mineral underpinnings from the Franc, the 2015 has much to offer. The blend is 83% Merlot and 17% Cabernet Franc.

Jeb Dunnuck (94)

Coming from more hard-packed limestone and clay soils next to Château Fonroque and the standard blend of 80/20 Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the deep purple-hued 2017 Les Asteries is a step up from the other releases from Maltus and has rocking levels of blackcurrants, plums, chocolate, crushed rocks, and violets on the nose. This carries to a full-bodied, powerful wine that has beautiful concentration, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It’s going to benefit from short-term cellaring and cruise for 15-20 years in cool cellars.

Even better and a monumental wine in the making, the profound 2010 Les Cailloux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Centenaire (tasted just prior to bottling) smells of a Provencal street market and offers up gorgeous aromas kirsch, raspberry, dried flowers, spice-box, roasted meats, and licorice on the nose. Coming from a single plot of very old Grenache (there is a touch of Mourvedre in the blend) and aged all in tank, this exuberant, hedonistic-bent Châteauneuf-du-Pape is full-bodied on the palate and delivers a voluptuous, mouth filling texture, brilliant concentration, and a blockbuster finish. Eclipsing the ’07 and up there with the ’90 (I think even better), this is monumental stuff that every Châteauneuf-du-Pape lover needs to have in the cellar!

Jeb Dunnuck (98+)

Another brilliant year at this estate, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Centenaire displays a deeper hue than the 2022 and 2023 and is based on 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah, completely destemmed and aged 24 months in concrete. It has a blockbuster nose of kirsch liqueur, roasted garrigue, licorice, iron, and some bloody nuances. These carry to a full-bodied Châteauneuf that has beautiful balance, ripe, building, firm tannins, and a gorgeous finish. It needs another 5-7 years, but this is a beautiful, layered, truly great Châteauneuf. Drink 2030-2050.

Wine Advocate (93+)

Made of 45% Cabernet Franc, 45% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, the deep garnet colored 2010 Les Carmes Haut-Brion gives up notes of baked blackberries, blackcurrants, black raspberries and cedar chest with hints of baking spices, black olives, pencil lead and Marmite toast. Full-bodied, the generously fruited palate has a solid backbone of grainy tannins and bold freshness supporting all that tightly-packed brawn, finishing with great length and purity. Still incredibly youthful, I suspect this wine has a lot more to give in the years to come!

Wine Advocate (92)

This tiny jewel of a property, situated close to La Mission-Haut-Brion and Haut-Brion, has turned out one of the stars of the 2011 vintage. A deep dark ruby/purple color is followed by hints of graphite, charcoal, creme de cassis and Christmas fruitcake. This medium-bodied Pessac-Leognan is gorgeously concentrated with impeccably well-integrated acidity, tannin, alcohol and oak. An authoritatively long finish adds to the class and nobility of this wine. Drink it over the next 15 years.

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (94)

A powerful, intense wine, the 2012 Les Carmes Haut-Brion exudes richness and depth. Game, smoke, tobacco, grilled herbs, black cherries and incense are some of the signatures. This explosive, powerful Pessac is going to need time to settle down, but it is exceptionally beautiful, even at this very early stage. Les Carmes Haut-Brion is marked by its high percentage of Cabernet Franc (38%) which is unusual in this part of Pessac, and its fabulous terroir. All of that is on full display here. Don't miss it!

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (95+)

One of the stars of the vintage, the 2014 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is total knock-out. Graphite, smoke, red cherry jam, spice, cured meat, pomegranate and tobacco are just some of the myriad sensations that race out of the glass. Today, the 2014 is gloriously ample on the palate, with remarkable nuance for a wine of its size. The Carmes Haut-Brion has been terrific in two recent tastings. The blend is 54 % Cabernet Franc, 32 % Merlot and 14 % Cabernet Sauvignon, all aged in oak, but with some influence of 500-liter tonneaux and 12-hectoliter casks. Simon Blanchard is the consulting oenologist. Tasted two times.
