This large estate has turned out a classic wine in 2017 that just screams of Saint-Estèphe. Checking in as a rough blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, and the rest equal parts Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it will spend 18 months in 60% new French oak. Textbook Saint Estèphe dark fruits, damp earth, and tobacco leaf all flow to a medium-bodied, rounded, nicely textured wine that has the cooler, perfumed, aromatics style of the vintage, good mid-palate depth, and gorgeous purity of fruit. From the team at Calon Ségur, the 2018 Château Capbern is another smoking good Saint-Estèphe. In 2018 it’s a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot that will spend 18 months in 60% new French oak. This ripe, sexy wine (it hit 14.6% natural alcohol) sports a deep purple color as well as blockbuster notes of crème de cassis, jammy blackberries, crushed flowers, and scorched earth. There is a big jump in freshness in the 2013 Carmín de Peumo, from a much cooler year; this is a wine always produced from the plot number 32 in their vineyard in Peumo. They have continuously reduced the time in oak and the percentage of new barrels used, while at the same time they have increased the quality of the wood, trying to unload the wine from the excesses of the past. This is still a full-bodied, powerful red blend where the oak is nicely integrated and the nose is fresh and clean, with a mixture of red berries and spices; this is presented in a slightly Bordeaux style combining warm and cool sensations, and very good balance. This wine always has a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. I might not have tasted all of the vintages, but this is possibly the best -- or one of the best -- vintages of Carmín; drink now or in the following ten or more years. One of my wines of the vintage in 2015, this is the best release yet from this joint venture between Domains Baron de Rothschild (Lafite) and the Catena family, launched in 2000. Combining Malbec with 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, mostly from Paraje Altamira in the Uco Valley, but with some support from Las Compuertas in Luján de Cuyo, it's a stunningly complex wine, which marries the richness of Argentinian flavours with the finesse and nuance of a top Left Bank Bordeaux. Here is a stunning wine that exudes excellence in primary material and winemaking craft. Man and nature come together with perfect precision and harmony in the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto. The balance is exquisite. Bold cherry and blackberry notes are followed by crushed mineral, licorice, smoke and lightly fragrant cedar. The wine also shows convincing power and volume. It spreads evenly over the palate, and its flavor intensity can be counted over many long minutes. Cerretalto is beautifully concentrated and rich, but it is never too heavy or dense. Castell'in Villa's 2015 Chianti Classico is a gorgeous wine that will delight readers who enjoy the Chianti Classicos of this reference-point estate in Castelnuovo Berardenga. Crushed flowers, mint, licorice, dried herbs, cedar and tobacco give the 2015 lovely aromatic complexity. The 2015 is perhaps a bit more open than young wines tend to be here, but then again, 2015 is a warm vintage that generally yielded accessible Chianti Classicos. All that means is that the 2015 can be enjoyed with less cellaring than is the norm here. As it so often is, the Castell'in Villa Chianti Classico is a wine of real pedigree and distinction.HK$2,700.00 -

Castellare's I Sodi di San Niccolò is the single most overlooked high-end wine in Tuscany today. The 2016 picks up where the 2015 left off. A rush of inky dark fruit, lavender, spice, licorice, gravel, blueberry and menthol builds as the 2016 shows off its exceptional balance and pedigree. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2016 needs a few years in bottle to fully come together. Even so, the 2016 has been nothing less than spectacular on the two occasions I have tasted it so far. Rose petal, cedar, tobacco and mint linger on the eternal finish. The 2016 is a magical wine that can be, surprisingly, enjoyed now or cellared for a number of years. The 2016 vintage is a classic example, a superb blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with 31% Malbec and 8% Cabernet Franc that’s still in its infancy. Subdued aromas of cassis, black cherries and nuanced herbaceous and tobacco notes. A lovely fluid entrance builds on concentration and complexity. Malbec’s seductive juiciness joins a vertical Cabernet structure, tannins and integrated oak, with a long, lingering finish. A wine to wait for.HK$2,400.00 -

Part of the magic that happens with the 2017 Syrah Bionic Frog is that it is opaque with neon purple edges without being inky and massive. With classic Syrah tones of smoked meat, leather, lavender, lilac and black pepper, the wine is rich with aromas of blackberry, black raspberry and smoked plum. Medium to full-bodied, the wine explodes with intention and precision on the palate, with an immaculate balance and crystal-clear focus. Brilliantly structured, the wine continues to evolve with subtle and seamlessly integrated spice tones compounded by a mineral tension and a floral lift to make this wine float across the mid-palate. The wine glides effortlessly to a long, winding finish with persistence and the elegance of silk. The vibrancy of flavor remains in the mouth long after the wine has left. For a wine this dark and this full-flavored, yet as graceful and agile on the palate as it is, you’ll be hard-pressed to put down the glass; I certainly can’t keep my hands off of it. The nose on this wine is a veritable mosaic of the amazing villages which make up blend. The blend is a super-complicated combination of La Morra (twoBrunates – La Morra and Barolo, Zonchetta), a Barolo plot in Cannubi San Lorenzo, Castiglione Falletto (2 parcels of Bricco Rocche, facing La Morra, and Rocche di Castoglione, Bussia in the Bussia Soprana section which is the finest and also Serralunga d’Alba (in Gabutti and Prapò). Federico would love to release these as three individual ‘village’ wines as opposed to a blended village Cru, but this will happen in the future. As far as this wine is concerned, it is a triumph of blending and the harmony here is extraordinary. This is a stunningly balanced wine which is forward, clean and refreshing. The fruit is cherry-soaked, tender, balanced and the tannins are crisp and juicy. This is a stunningly forward and expressive wine and it is a magnificent example of harnessing the most favourable characters of the vintage and gently coaxing these elegant tones from this myriad of vineyard sites. It is an incredibly impressive and also unnervingly sensitive Nebbiolo.HK$2,417.00 -

The 2019 Pinot Noir Cincuenta y Cinco was fermented in whole bunches and half aged in used barrels and the rest in concrete. The aromas are a little murky with earth and a whiff of mushroom over fresh plum and cherry. With tangible grip from the stems, the expression is skinny but finely grained. The complexity lies in how the fruit is challenged by other flavors without getting overwhelmed. An interesting wine.HK$2,499.00
