The 2021 Pommard Clos de la Commaraine is a monopole owned by the domaine due to be overlooked by a luxury hotel currently under construction. This is completely de-stemmed. Two bottles were opened as I was not happy with the first - and a good decision as the second is much fresher. Quite earthy in style, you might actually assume there are some stems in the mix. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, a keen line of acidity, not amazingly complex yet cohesive and with an attractive pastille-like finish. There'll be better to come, but this is commendable for a challenging growing season.HK$7,365.00 -

Decanter (95)
The 2023 Clos de la Commaraine aromas are deep and rich, with notes of plum and blackberry, hints of earth and leather and a light floral note at the end. The texture is firm, tannic and dense, but not unyielding. The grapes are from a 3.63ha monopole clos. Farming and vinification are done parcel by parcel; the new owners, Denise Dupré and Mark Nunnelly, have hired Paul Krug as régisseur, who has undertaken the work of budding over inferior clonal selections with massal selection from vines planted in 1957.HK$9,160.00 -

Wine Advocate (94+)
The 2022 Pinot Noir Bloom's Field is the most red-fruited and floral of the roster, opening on a reserved note but ceaselessly escalating in intensity. The palate takes a dramatically powerful, saturated turn into a slow-moving, opulent yet classy finish that ceaselessly builds tannic power without adding an ounce of weight. Serious and unyielding despite its deceptively delicate framing, this merits time in the cellar to unwind but should evolve wonderfully over the next decade.HK$5,515.00 -

The 2015 Pinot Noir La Côte is fabulous, and probably the greatest offering Domaine de la Côte has released to date—although the 2016 rendition will give it a run for its money in due course. The wine soars from the glass with a bouquet of kaleidoscopic complexity featuring notes of raspberries, red cherries, potpourri, rose hip and sweet spices. On the palate, the La Côte is medium-bodied and expansive, framed by incredibly fine-grained tannins and boasting stunning inner-mouth perfume. The concentration and depth that have been packed into this decidedly elegant, even delicate wine are incredible. This is compelling testimony to what can be achieved in an extreme mesoclimate if one's willing to accept the tiny yields that are essential to achieving full phenolic maturity.HK$8,980.00 -
(6x75cl) 2018Vinous (96+)
The 2018 Pinot Noir La Côte is a dark, somber wine. Huge swaths of tannin wrap around a core of blue and purplish fruit. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2018 is not at all forthcoming. This is an especially brooding, potent style. Time in the glass brings out hints of lavender, sage and dried herbs, but the 2018 is in no mood of showing all its cards right now.HK$11,985.00 -

Vinous (90)
Dark ruby-red. Sauvage aromas of raspberry, garrigue, roasted coffee, maple syrup and mint; distinctly cooked suggestions of surmaturite Very rich, sweet and thick; a big, spicy, superripe fruit bomb with a velvety texture and just enough balancing acidity. Finishes with fine tannins and port-like notes of raisin and damp earth.HK$3,465.00 -
(1x75cl) 1997Vinous (89)
Dark red-ruby. Smoky, truffley aroma of redcurrant, red cherry and tobacco; distinct note of fruit compote. Superripe and jammy in the mouth; quite fat for the vintage. Finishes with grainy tannins and a hint of acidity. The mourvedre tasted like grenache in '97, noted Vaille. I did not taste the '99 cabernet so I can't comment on the '99 red. But the syrah I tasted was ripe-bordering-on-confectionery, and three lots of mourvedre showed super-sweetness of fruit and uncanny acidity. The richest lot, which probably will not be part of the '99 assemblage, was harvested early, with an incredible 18.5% potential alcohol. It still carried 50 grams per liter of residual sugar in early May but came across as only moderately sweet due to its razor-sharp 10 grams per liter of acidity (expressed as tartaric). Vinous (93)
Prominent forest floor, dried strawberry and a gently raisined nuance give the 2007 Vin de Pays de l'Hérault Rouge an immediately seductive, fully evolved aromatic profile. Medium- to full-bodied and concentrated, the dense 2007 is showing extremely well today, with resolved tannins offering just enough grip, beautifully preserved freshness, a hedonistic intensity across the mid-palate and a juicy, elegant finale. The overall balance is striking, and well-stored bottles like this one should hold for another five years without difficulty.HK$43,670.00 -
