Roberto Conterno bought this parcel in Arione in 2015 and was well aware of the character and power of its fruit. The Giacomo Conterno 2021 Nebbiolo d'Alba Vigna Arione pretty much follows the same winemaking procedures as Barolo. It spends three years in large oak cask and goes to market about four months after bottling. The first vintage produced was officially 2019 (although a special charity edition was produced in 2015), with a current production of 7,000 bottles. The 2016 Barolo Bussia is a wine of tremendous character and complexity. Menthol, lavender, black cherry, graphite, cloves and leather all open up in the glass. Virile and layered, with tons of depth, the 2016 Bussia has so much to offer. A few years in the cellar will help the tannins soften, but the 2016 is already quite expressive. Moving to the 2021 Barolo Bussia, it pours a bright transparent red color and offers a pure aromatic profile with notes of cherry candies, preserved orange, amaro-like sweet herbs, and dried earth. The palate is also vibrant and transparent, with a bit more savory iron-richness lurking gently underneath on the finish, framing the otherwise more transparent ripe berried fruit that coaxes through the palate. The 2021 Barolo Cannubi pours a reflective ruby red hue and leads with a lovely floral and fruity perfume with an elegantly layered feel, revealing notes of fresh leather, raspberry liqueur, wild strawberries, fresh violets, and candied licorice. It moves seamlessly to the palate, with a juicy and approachable feel upfront before its more compact structure and energy reveal themselves through the mid-palate and finish. It has refreshing acidity, well-defined, ripe tannins, and a nice element of nervous energy through the finish, suggesting its ability to age and improve over the next 12-15 years. Ferruccio Grimaldi's 2010 Barolo is an excellent introduction to the vintage. Dark red cherry, plum, cinnamon and new leather notes emerge from the glass in a distinctive, medium-bodied Barolo. The 2010 stands out for its energy, balance and poise. Freshly cut flowers and tobacco linger on the finish. The 2010 is showing beautifully at this stage, especially if given a little aeration. Dried flowers and spices linger on the lifted finish. I very much like the sense of energy and intensity here. Beneath it all, there's struck match, salty reduction and layers of preserved lemon, brine and a hint of camphor. In the mouth, the wine forges a path across the palate, stopping for no man (or woman), and cascades off the back of the palate into a long abyss of endless flavor. It spools and spirals, and if it had a sound, it would fade slowly until it was hard to discern between sensation and memory. This is an utter pleasure to drink, to consider and to smell. Having tasted five bottles of this remarkable wine over the past year (most of them mine), I can confirm that it is evolving and changing with time in the bottle, but each time I taste it, I am amazed by its ability to highlight parts of the wine I may not have focused on the last time I tasted it. Twice this week, the 2021 Estate Vineyard Chardonnay has spoken first of its reduction and flint: it is bony and austere and taut, and I mean this in the best of ways. It speaks of its architecture currently, over its fruit. Yet it is propelled by the fruit. Giaconda manages focus and precision alongside its famous reduction, and this is what separates it from other producers in the country. It may be easy to can the reduction if it's not your preferred quality in Chardonnay, but the fruit and phenolic focus of the wine is untouchable. This is inimitable.
