The Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese White Capsule 2016 epitomises the pristine elegance of Mosel's premier vineyards. Handcrafted in the esteemed Zeltinger Sonnenuhr plot, this Riesling benefits from slate-rich soils that impart a distinctive minerality. Markus Molitor, renowned for his meticulous viticultural practices, cultivates the grapes with a commitment to sustainability and precision pruning, ensuring optimal ripeness and balance. Harvested at optimal maturity, the late selection (Spätlese) grapes undergo gentle pressing and fermentation in stainless steel tanks, preserving the wine's vibrant acidity and aromatic complexity. The result is a refined palate of ripe stone fruits, citrus blossoms, and subtle honeyed notes, seamlessly integrated with a crisp mineral backbone. This 2016 vintage showcases Markus Molitor's dedication to producing expressive, age-worthy Rieslings, offering a harmonious interplay of sweetness and acidity. An exquisite choice for connoisseurs seeking depth and sophistication in their fine wine collection. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-93)Saturated purple ruby. Aromas of blackberry, bitter chocolate, mocha and espresso, with a minty nuance. Then lush, pliant and deep, with lovely sweetness and density. Finishes with big, palate-coating, ripe tannins and strong fruit. This wine has been a moving target in its three vintages, as the 1999 was 80% cabernet sauvignon, the 2000 70% merlot and this 2001 roughly a 50/50 blend of the two varieties. |

Wine Advocate (93+)Another brilliant example from Murielle Andraud and her partner Jean-Luc Thunevin, the intense 2012 Marojallia (a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) displays an opaque purple color and a beautiful nose of charcoal, graphite, blueberry and blackberry fruit. Some toasty oak is present, but the sweetness of the tannins, the multi-dimensional mouthfeel, and terrific length and intensity make this one of the great stars of 2012. Drink it over the next 20 years. |

Wine Advocate (94)I reported on the current release, the 2001 Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial, previously but underrated it slightly. This cuvee is sourced from a single plot called La Plana planted at over 1500 feet of elevation. It is made up of 93% Tempranillo and 7% Mazuelo chosen for its acidity. The wine is aged for 10 months in new American oak followed by 21 months in seasoned oak. It is then held in bottle for 3-4 years prior to release. Deeply colored, spicy, elegant and complex, the wine has great volume and grip as well as exceptional length. It can be approached now but will easily have a 30 year lifespan. |

James Suckling (99)Marvelous aromas of crushed berries, tobacco, cedar and mushrooms. Some dried cheese. Then turns to flowers. Very complex. Full and intense with fantastic depth and power. It goes on for minutes. It is a wine that exudes tradition but gives a sense of modernity with precise winemaking. Two years in oak, one in concrete and three or four in bottle. Drink on release and age onwards. |

Rioja | 3 | 98 (JS) | HK$7,680.00
James Suckling (98)Extremely well-mannered, traditional character to this, showing layer upon layer of savory complexity on the nose, with iron, dried meat, tobacco, balsamic fruit, dried red berries, orange peel, leather and dried mushrooms. A medium-to full-bodied, linear and zesty Rioja that’s full of nuanced flavors that linger through the very long, savory finish. Floral, too. Yet, it remains bright and precise. Tempranillo with 16% mazuelo. Drink on release or hold. |

Rioja | 3 | 100 (JS) | HK$9,590.00
James Suckling (100)So much dried flower, mushroom, iron, rust, sweet berry, and grilled orange. Full-bodied with very elegant and refined tannins that melt in the mouth and give a real sense of place and integrity. Balanced and harmonious. The finesse and finish is endless. Production was 30% less than in 2011. Already so drinkable. A wonderful future. This is the new 1934 or 1964, two legends. Drink or hold. |

James Suckling (98)This is historical Rioja in the glass with dark-berry, Spanish-cedar, bark, mahogany and light earth aromas that follow through to a full body with firm, fine tannins that are layered and intense. It really is multilayered, with a citrus and cedar aftertaste. Wonderful length and composure. Try after 2023, but already fantastic. |

Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (94)The exuberance and depth of 2015 is found in abundance here, with red and black fruits, touches of fig and pomegranate, velvety and supple in texture. Firm but fine slate tannins, and lots of them, suggesting this will age well. It's balanced, super enjoyable with plenty of grip. Harvest September 28 to October 15. Wine Advocate (96)Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Marquis d'Alesme Becker leaps from the glass with gregarious notions of plum preserves, crème de cassis and Black Forest cake with hints of potpourri, star anise, menthol and tapenade. Full, rich, firm and grainy, with fantastic freshness lifting the densely packed palate, it has a long, beautifully fragrant finish. |

Jeb Dunnuck (93-95)Brought into the US exclusively by Jeffrey Davies, the 2017 Château Marquis d'Alesme Becker might just be the finest wine from this estate to date. Made from 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot, aged in 65% new French oak, its deep purple color is followed by a gorgeous perfume of crème de cassis, black cherries, crushed violets, and cedary spice. Possessing terrific purity of fruit, medium to full body, building tannin, and a great finish, this balanced, impeccably made 2017 will need 2-4 years of cellaring and keep for two decades or more. It’s a gem in the vintage and readers owe it to themselves to check out this estate, which has an undeniably gorgeous terroir. |

Jeb Dunnuck (97)A rock star Margaux that should be snatched up by readers, the 2018 Château Marquis D'Alesme reveals a dense purple hue as well as ripe, sexy notes of blackcurrants, spicy oak, tobacco leaf, earth, and cedar. Deep, full-bodied, and gorgeously concentrated, it has velvety tannins, a layered, mouthcoating texture, and a great finish. It's a baby, but wow, what a wine. Hide bottle for 5-7 years if you can (you'll be forgiven for opening a bottle early) and it's going to evolve for 30-40 years. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (95)The 2019 Marquis d'Alesme Becker was very impressive from barrel. Now in bottle, it has retained those engaging aromas of blackberry, raspberry, cedar and a pinch of spice, well defined and quintessentially Margaux. The palate is understated on the entry, smooth and sensual in texture, with gorgeous, very pure red fruit. I adore the harmony of this wine, and the way it sashays toward the finish. Deceptively approachable, this will mature beautifully in bottle. |
