Tim Atkin MW (98)

Overall Red Wine of the Year - Chile 2022 Special Report. Well, well, well. Who would have anticipated this? My best Chilean red wine of the year is a Malbec - and not just any Malbec. Roca Madre is an incredible, world-class red from the volcanic soils of the Río Hurtado vineyard, located at 1,600 metres in the remote Limarí Andes. Racy, tangy, grippy and intensely perfumed, it's an incredible expression of the variety, with violet, plum and black cherry concentration, fine-grained tannins and a pithy, energetic, mineral-etched core.

Roca Madre is a remarkable Malbec from an extreme site in the Limarí Andes, located at 1,600 metres on volcanic soils. Intense, focused, herbal and refreshing, with well-handled coffee bean oak, stylish tannins, lots of energy and zip, a violet top note and intense raspberry, plum, blueberry and black forest gâteau flavours.

Vinous (95)

The 2022 Chardonnay Talinay Caliza hails from a tiny chalky plot of the Talinay Vineyard in Limarí, and was aged for 10 months in French oak barrels. The precise nose presents green apple and creamed corn notes with hints of hazelnut, praline, wet stone and a faint layer of gunpowder. Dry and concentrated in the mouth. The chalky, taut, refreshing feel produces a complex palate before the mouth-watering finish. A coastal Chardonnay of rare character.

Vinous (91)

The 2020 Esprit de Tablas slowly unfolds in the glass with a mix of dusty black cherries, blood orange and sweet herbs. It’s lifted in feel with crisp mineral tones and rosy inner florals that perfectly complement its core of tart wild berry fruit. More lifted than the surrounding vintages yet excellently concentrated, the 2020 tapers off with exceptional length and crunchy tannins as hints of tart cranberry fade. The 2020 is the product of a warm, late season, with the added challenge of smoke from raging wildfires. While it comes across as quite docile, I find no issues with taint.

James Suckling (98)

This is the debut vintage of this wine from the esteemed Bordeaux owner, Alfred Tesseron, who bought the property in the Napa mountains in 2016. Aromas of plums, wet earth, fresh herbs and tobacco. Some green olives. Turns to blueberries and blackberries. Full-bodied, yet reserved and layered with chocolate, walnuts and plums. Firm yet polished tannins give a framed sense to the wine. Savory. Racy and beautifully structured, it’s extremely drinkable already. Real wine.

James Suckling (97)

Rather rich, flamboyant and decadent with bright raspberries, mushrooms and bark. Full-bodied, yet very tight and refined, with firmness and length. Racy and fine for a 2017. No cabernet franc in the blend, just cabernet sauvignon and merlot. Drink after 2023.

The Wine Independent (99)

The 2018 Pym-Rae is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it needs considerable swirling to unlock evocative, pristine notes of juicy blackberries, ripe blueberries, cassis, and red currant jelly, followed by hints of lavender, crushed rocks, bay leaves, and iron ore, with a fragrant waft of cinnamon and cloves. The densely laden, full-bodied palate bursts with ripe, perfumed black fruits, supported by firm, very finely grained tannins, and fantastic tension, finishing with a long-lasting firework display of red berry and earthy sparks. With a 4–6-hour double-decant, it is delicious now, but if you want that next-level experience, give it a good 5-6 more years in bottle and drink it over the next 40 years+.

Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (95)

Fennel, anis, blackcurrant, mint leaf and cedar, cold campfire, charcoal, black chocolate and a long stretched out finish. You really start to see the project come into focus, and this is a successful vintage at Pym Rae even in a challenging year, so they should be very happy with what they have achieved. Vineyards at 600m altitude, dry-farmed with crop cover and no till to help retain moisture. It has now been five years since they took over and stopped all irrigation, and the balance in this wine suggests that the vines are beginning to respond and find their balance. Held back in bottle for 18 months before release. Tasted straight from bottle and with a carafe - I strongly suggest giving it plenty of air if planning to drink soon. Jerôme Ledit director. 70% new oak, with cement vats for fermentation.

The 2019 Pinot Noir Outcrop is a beautiful wine with arresting aromatics: a core of wild berries is accented by tea leaves, lavender, Campari and lemon peel. The light-bodied palate is grainy and fresh with surprising concentration for its approachable frame and a very long, detailed finish.

North America is somewhat difficult to pigeonhole – though technically ‘new world’, it is In the Northern Hemisphere, and the wines have the same devoted fan base (and often first-growth prices) as many classic European wines. Cooler climate Cabs, Merlots, Pinots, Chardonnays and Rieslings with old-world structure can all be found, though if anything is lacking by comparison it is consistency. South America is an exciting new melting pot of styles and flavours with a range of soils types and altitudes – taking international varietals and finishing with French winemaking techniques, or in the case of Argentinian Malbec, adopting a largely unloved grape and making it their own.
