Australia & NZ
These far-flung wine regions may be referred to ‘new’ when compared against the historic European wine regions, but they have a long winemaking history. Spared from Phylloxera, Australia in particular has world's highest concentration of venerable vines and legendary producers such as Penfolds, Henschke and Tyrell’s have been around for over 150 years. Though for many years piggybacking on Europe’s successes, branding their own wines as ‘Chablis’, ‘Hermitage’ etc., Australia now have created a real identity of their own, making inimitable styles like Coonawarra Cabernet or Hunter Valley Semillon.
New Zealand doesn’t quite have as an extensive history but has established itself in an astonishingly short amount of time as a reliable source of whistle clean, distinctive examples of varietals like Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.

'Outstanding'. A powerful and distinctive bouquet with a core complexity built around ripe red berry fruit, a natural savoury dried herb complexity, a gentle sweetness of oak and baking spice scents to match, there’s density and richness alongside power and finesse. A powerful youthful energy as the wine touches the palate transitioning smoothly through berry flavours, the savoury seam and textures from tannins and acidity. Delicious, youthful and full of pinosity. A lovely expression, complex and lengthy. Best drinking from 2022 through 2030+.HK$1,710.00 -

The 2020 Pinot Noir Settlement Vineyard is unforced and aromatically enticing. This is ripe, textural and satisfying, yet there's tension on the finish that draws it out thanks to whole clusters in the ferment. While red and plum fruit still dominate the aromatics, this veers towards savory with dried herbs and delicate festive spices.HK$3,085.00 -

A very burgundian-style Pinot Noir with floral, cherry and sweet, sappy flavours. Remarkably approachable despite a solid backbone of tannins, which are ripe and soft. Elegant wine with power and intensity. Super-stylish wine that is distinctive and very appealing. I love it.HK$840.00 -

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2011 Graveyard Shiraz exudes aromas of freshly crushed blackberries, red cherries and violets with hints of cedar, cinnamon stick, vanilla and Szechuan pepper. At just 13% alcohol this light to medium-bodied Shiraz offers a great intensity of flavor in a very elegant package that is supported by medium levels of finely-grained tannins, balanced acidity and a long finish. It should age very well and drink 2015 to 2026+.HK$7,775.00 -
Halliday Wine Companion (99)
One of Australia's icons. The decision not to use any new French oak, and to limit the alcohol to 13.5%, has resulted in a wine with a unique sense of place. It is also superbly balanced, dark fruits married to superfine tannins - another feature of a classic Hunter shiraz.HK$8,145.00 -

The early release of Graveyard Shiraz (along with many other Brokenwood jewels ex the 2021 vintage) is presumably driven by the absence of any wines from the bushfire smoke contamination, but it's a lovely wine managing to look great in this year, and doubtless will in 20, 30 or 40 years' time too, take your pick. It has a complex bouquet, with some oak nuances in the backdrop, its masterful control of tannins is one of its secrets, red fruit joining the usual black and purple to complete the tale.HK$8,320.00 -
Halliday Wine Companion (99)
Pale straw-green - an extraordinary colour of an extraordinary wine. A fragrant bouquet floats out of the glass and introduces a palate that has the best of all worlds: lemon, lemon curd, beeswax and fruit spice with no hint of the searing acidity Hunter Valley semillon can throw at the unwary. Here it is perfectly (and naturally) balanced. A worthy companion to the sublime Graveyard Shiraz '18.HK$3,685.00 -

Deep ruby-purple the 2013 Pinot Noir has a youthfully reticent, brooding nose with hints of black berries and plums plus underlying aged beef, chargrill, anise and lavender suggestions. Medium bodied, the palate reveals great ripeness packed into a relatively elegant package with a medium level of fine grained tannins – impressive texture in fact – harmonious acidity, and a good long finish.HK$6,665.00 -

While lacking the flamboyant fruit and silkiness of the 2009 vintage, this beautifully constructed wine gets a tick in every box. It is seamless, concentrated and teasingly restrained giving just a glimpse of what it will have to offer after bottle development. Classy wine with a great future.HK$6,665.00 -

I never swallow samples during tasting but got pretty close with this wine. It’s just so damn delicious with layer upon layer of fruit and savoury characters that defy description. A tease of fruit sweetness is balanced by gentle tannins and subtle acidity that drive a very lengthy finish. A seriously good Pinot Noir.HK$1,025.00 -

Intense, vibrant pinot noir showing real depth and complexity with nuanced floral, dark cherry and raspberry flavours together with thyme, anise, spice and a suggestion of white pepper. A backbone of fruity acidity reveals energy and helps to promote a lingering finish. A serious wine from one of Central Otago's top producers.HK$3,255.00 -

The 2020 Pinot Noir Burn Cottage Vineyard is not a wine that I want to deconstruct into its components as it exemplifies balance, harmony and completeness, and I want to drink a lot of it. It is a wine that is the sum of its parts rather than its individual elements. It is young and can be approached now, but deserves bottle aging. It is full-bodied and suave but being from Central Otago - at the bottom of the earth next stop penguins - it has a sense of coolness and freshness, enlivening its entirety and retaining a sense of melodic direction among the mellow bass sections. There's a very small percentage of whole clusters (7%) that combine with the natural garrigue notes of Central Otago Pinot to provide herbal lift alongside pure cherry fruit and carefully judged oak.HK$2,705.00 -

The 2021 Burn Cottage Vineyard Pinot Noir is alive and energetic, svelte and composed. As I write this, I am sitting at the bottom of the Burn Cottage Vineyard in Lowburn, looking up the rows. This is a mineral, nuanced expression, with graphite and white tea, pomegranate pearls, raspberry licorice, rosehips and crushed pink peppercorns. This is what I came here for. It’s thrilling, lacy, delicate and focused. Exciting wine, exciting drinking. It sits on the palate nicely—evenly weighted, and it spools through the long finish... yes! 13.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork.HK$2,380.00 -

The 2021 Sauvage Vineyard Pinot Noir is supremely pretty. It's elegant and fine and still powerful, thanks to the Bannockburn area; however, the wine itself shows rose petals and spring flowers, graphite and pencil lead, white pepper and tapenade. Svelte and sleek, this is composed and detailed and so, so good. I am (mostly) resisting hyperbole and adverbs here. This is a standout wine from a superstar producer—an asset for the region and indeed the country (and the New World in general). 13.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork.HK$2,480.00 -
(6x75cl) 2023The Real Review (97)
Bright, medium-yellow hue; restrained nutty, creamy, faintly buttery and lightly toasted bread aromas, a touch of 'milk bottle' confectionery. The palate is taut and tensioned, with vibrant acidity and subtle lemon/grapefruit and pear aromas, the lemony fruit and acidity driving it to a long finish. Bright and nervy: a more delicate and reserved style of chardonnay for this region and producer, and promises to have a long and bright career.HK$3,070.00 -

The Real Review (97)
Medium red colour with a trace of purple in the rim. The bouquet is pepper-spicy, stemmy and savoury, with a whiff of new kid leather, while the palate is elegantly structured and yet firm, tremendously intense, taut as a bow-string, and magnificently balanced. This is a stunning pinot of a complex, bunchy style, already drinking well, with more held in reserve. 17 JUN 2020HK$2,670.00 -

Shimmering ruby-red. Intensely perfumed red fruit preserve, potpourri, exotic spice and vanilla aromas show outstanding clarity and minerally lift. Conveys an impressive blend of depth and energy on the palate, offering sweet Chambord, cherry cola and spicecake flavors and a touch of botanical herbs. The wonderfully long, focused finish features reverberating red fruit and floral notes and polished, finely interwoven tannins.HK$3,465.00 -

(6x75cl) 2022The Real Review (94)
Medium depth ruby, bright with purple reflections; the bouquet a mix of red cherry, smoky savoury notes, root vegetables and vanilla. Stalky nuances are there but tucked more in the background. The wine is rich and full in the mouth with generosity and ample, mouth-coating tannins which are fine, ripe and supple. A slighty less-varietal pinot but a wine of real substance.HK$3,120.00 -
The Real Review (97)
Light to mid-yellow colour, with a shy, reserved bouquet of savoury elements including almond meal, stone fruits, malt and bran biscuit. Traces of honey and nougat emerging. Appealing creamy lees touches. The wine is tremendously intense and beautifully rounded, soft-textured and finely balanced while enlivened by its citrusy acidity. Long, long carry. A classy wine of great complexity and refinement.HK$5,995.00 -

Light to mid-yellow hue, with a reserved, shy bouquet which has traces of lemon balm, creamy lees and pencil wood, while the flavour is tremendously intense and focused, powerful in an understated way, with lemon and grapefruit flavours, showing concentration as well as subtlety, the finish lingering on and on. Time will doubtless build that bouquet further. A smashing chardonnay.HK$3,550.00 -

Light-mid yellow, bright, with complex aromas of bread crust, buttery croissant, oat biscuit and creamy lees nuances, the palate fresh and bright, intense and alive with lemon juice, lemon zest flavours—quite tight and reserved with a dry finish and tension that suggests it will build more complexity and richness with time. It's already an outstanding chardonnay of great flavour and refinement.HK$5,195.00 -

Bright and shiny light to mid yellow colour; roasted hazelnut and lemon curd aromas, a suggestion of marzipan or almond. The wine is intense and precise on the palate, beautifully focused and concentrated yet with great poise and finesse, the finish powering long with a cleansing, refreshing follow-through. Beautiful chardonnay, with great potential.HK$4,315.00 -

Medium-yellow, bright colour with aromas of leatherwood honey, flowers and discreet notes of apricot and other stone fruits. In the mouth, it's bright and intense with crisp, freshening acidity that cleanses and extends the finish. Quite definite varietal fruit character; acid sits out slightly from the body.HK$3,015.00 -
