Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Wine Advocate (92-94)The 2022 Chablis 1er Cru Séchet unwinds in the glass with aromas of crisp stone fruits, ripe lemons, white flowers, clear honey and subtle hints of warm spices. Medium to full-bodied, cool and satiny, the vintage has lent this a gracious charm that isn't always typical of young Séchet, but the wine's searingly mineral signature remains front and center. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)Clear pale colour, a refined and chiselled nose. A little quality oak now emerges to flesh out the bouquet. The fruit is very evenly distributed across the palate, still with an oak presence, a little sandalwood, a good mix between fruit and acidity, and a fine long finish. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: November 2023. |

|
Burgundy | 1 | 93-96 (IB) | HK$8,180.00
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)Full primrose. There is an initial richness which cannot quite hide the stones beneath, nor should it. Terrific energy at the back of the palate, more so than Romanée, with fine length and the saline touch last seen in the Perrières. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023. |

Burgundy | 1 | 91-94 (IB) | HK$7,980.00
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)A lively lime inflected yellow. The nose is backward though speaks just a little of the limestone hillside. The intensity is there but I know more exciting examples. Quite good length of flavour. Not quite singing but may just need more elevage. Drink from 2028-2036. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)Vines which the Vincent Girardin team manage in Les Fairendes. A gleaming lemon and lime colour, with plenty of energy but also a vivacious fresh fruit. Particularly bursting with energy on the mid palate, beautifully balanced, and with reasonable length. Does not need much more elevage. Drink from 2028-2038. Tasted: November 2023. |

Burgundy | 1 | 92-94 (IB) | HK$6,180.00
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)Bright pale primrose, with a reductive nose. There’s a very significant weight to the fruit though, with good acidity behind, a little yellow fruit then a cushion of broad-based orchard fruit behind. A punchy, energetic finish. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted: November 2023. |

|
Burgundy | - | 91-94 (IB) | HK$5,575.00
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)Mid lemon yellow. A faint reduction and a light oxidation, shows the straight from untouched barrel nature of the sample. The oak speaks quiet loudly, then there is good acidity behind, and fine length – but not so easy to see at this moment. However, the exceptional length of the finish indicates that when this settles down it will be a classy wine. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted: November 2023. |

Burgundy | - | 93-95 (IB) | HK$1,000.00
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)Mid to full lemon yellow. The bouquet here displays a class and a weight of fruit over and above the others. There is impressive depth through the middle of the palate, then a saline note at the back, as the minerality of the vineyard punches through the undoubted flesh. A good long finish. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)Mid primrose, and the bouquet could use freshening up. Quite solid, showing the oak a little, including a touch of spice and sandalwood. Yet I do very much like the wine beneath, solid orchard fruit, medium acidity and fine length. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted: November 2023. |

Burgundy | - | 92-95 (IB) | HK$6,370.00
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)Mid lemon yellow. The bouquet shows white orchard fruit in some volume. This is tightly wound for a Combettes, with lifted white fruit, very good energy through the middle of the palate, and a trace of ripe citrus at the finish. Structured and youthful. Drink from 2029-2037. Tasted: November 2023. |

Burgundy | 1 | 93-96 (IB) | HK$8,490.00
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)From Ez Folatières, purchased as must. A lime streak runs through the mid yellow colour. This has notable density of bouquet without showing much detail yet. More substantial than the racy Pucelles, but retaining its own lively character behind the substantial flesh. Dense, generous, and with class. Drink from 2029-2038. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)Located at the very start of Troesmes, 55 to 60 year old vines. Fine fresh lemon yellow. A clean and elegant fruit forward nose, lighter in style than most 1ers crus, hence its place in the line-up. Youthful bitters again, then a serene follow through, pure and precise. Fine elegant finish. Drink from 2026-2031. Tasted: June 2023. |

Burgundy | - | 95 (DC) | HK$3,395.00
Decanter (95)A stunning example, with finesse allied to power. Real tension and energy here. Will be approachable quite young, but really should be aged for over five years for the best result. Fèvre has 2.24ha within Montée de Tonnerre. Plots are located in Pied d'Aloup (facing east) with profound Kimmeridgian soils bringing freshness, Chapelot facing south on deep soil adding richness, and Côte de Brechain facing west on top of the hill with the oldest plots dating back to 1936. |

|
Burgundy | - | 93-95 (IB) | HK$2,495.00
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)(5 Star wine) Clear lemon and lime colour. Just a very light coquillage reduction. Then the wine builds a beautiful level of intensity on the palate, a lime thread, very salivating for its dry finish. An impeccable balance, this is faultless. And so persistent! Nothing heavy, nothing over sunny. Drink from 2027-2035. Tasted: June 2023. |

William Fevre Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons
(6x75cl)
2022
|
|
Burgundy | - | 92-94 (IB) | HK$2,495.00
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)Mostly in Vaillons itself, with Chatains, Roncières and Mélinots. Another translucent pale lime colour. The nose is a little lighter than Montmains, very fine, lime and lemon notes throughout, it tastes as though filtered through a bed of tiny stones. Graceful and persistent. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: June 2023. |
|||||||||
William Fevre Chablis 1er Cru Vaulorent
(6x75cl)
2022
|
|
Burgundy | - | 96 (DC) | HK$3,295.00
Decanter (96)Fèvre has 3.65ha of Vaulorent. Situated on the grand cru hill rather than the Fourchaume slope, the soils here are characterised by lots of Kimmeridgian marl. Tight and tense, lots of energy here, powerful and precise and compensates with concentration and density more akin to Chablis Grand Cru. GIve this five years and it will be stunning. |
