Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Hailing from the legendary terroirs of Burgundy, the Gros Frere et Soeur Vosne Romanee 2022 is an emblematic expression of French finesse and craftsmanship. This Pinot Noir asserts its pedigree with its origin, the shine of Vosne Romanee, a revered Grand Cru. Produced by Gros Frère et Soeur, a family-operated winery dating back to 1830, the wine creator's meticulous care is evident in every bottle. The winemaking process remains faithful to traditional methods, using hand-harvested, organically-farmed grapes. Fermented in oak barrels to enhance complexity and depth, this wine is an authentic symbol of Burgundy excellence. With its elegant bouquet of dark fruit enlivened by earthy undertones and a subtle hint of spice, the Gros Frere et Soeur Vosne Romanee 2022 is an irresistible temptation for the discerning palate. The lingering finish is testimony to an impeccable balance. A wine that perfectly encapsulates the terroir from which it springs, it embodies bourgeois elegance and brilliance at its finest. |

|
Burgundy | - | 89-90 (IB) | HK$2,685.00
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-90)10% new wood, about to be bottled. The Bourgogne offers a heavenly nose right from the start. All about the fruit which has a darker edge to it. The stem side gives a real tingle. Now some dark red cherries in the fruit. Salty notes at the very back. A tannin or two to finish. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted: November 2023. |

Burgundy | - | 94-96 (IB) | HK$11,180.00
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)100% new wood, to bottle in April. The wood comes from mixed forests, as Jean-Pierre thinks Tronçais doesn’t work here. A bright fresh crimson ruby. More floral more sensual, the early morning rose says Jean-Pierre. This is more quintessentially Vosne than the Brûlées, with a lifted and balanced flair, a mix of darked red fruits, avoiding the blacker side. White pepper spice becomes more apparent at the end. A thick velvet coat of fruit throughout. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)(5 Star Wine) Deep ruby crimson colour. At this end of the scale the power of the fruit and the vineyard character completely outweigh the vinification. 100% new wood (Tronçais) is invisible. Instead, we find the slaty and singed character of the vineyard, plus an astonishing wealth of fruit. A thickness of texture which is extraordinary. Quite stunning this year with the blood red depth of fruit. Enough acidity behind and exceptional pure as well as concentrated. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023. |

Burgundy | 1 | 91-94 (IB) | HK$13,430.00
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)40% new wood, December bottling. Far from the deepest in colour, but definitely not the least elegant either! Rose petals abound. A few fresh alpine strawberries too. This has remarkable tension on the palate and is almost as nuanced as an Echezeaux (at least as, Jean-Pierre thinks!). Certainly there is a gorgeous, almost glossy aftertaste. Highest pH. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: November 2023. |

|
Burgundy | - | 92-94 (IB) | HK$6,910.00
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)100% new wood, to bottle in April. A rich purple colour, more saturated. Less floral than the regular Vosne, more in little red fruits. Excellent density, bright fruit backed by a little liquorice note, while the structure behind indicates that this will need time to come round. Drink from 2029-2037. Tasted: November 2023. |

Vinous (89-90)The 2022 Bourgogne Blanc is superb. It offers up hints of apricot, baked apple tart, spice, vanillin and tangerine oil. Rich, dense and creamy, the Bourgogne Blanc hugely overdelivers. Henri Boillot offers a lot of wine here. |

|
Burgundy | - | 88 (VN) | HK$1,295.00
Vinous (88)The 2022 Bourgogne Blanc Hautes-Côtes de Nuits is aged in 15% new larger 450-liter oak barrels. It has a light nose with yellow plum and touches of ginger, but it needs a little more energy and tension. The palate is better than the nose, lovely and balanced with a slightly honeyed texture. It's not long-term, but it should drink well for the next 3-4 years. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89)In bottle. A cherry to crimson colour. Fine, pleasing, stylish cherry fruit on the nose, cherry to raspberry on the palate, a little tannin to help the structure, but essentially on the fruit, pure and classy. Drink from 2025-2028. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)A bright ruby purple. Like the Chambolle the bouquet is all about a primary energy. The Vosne is if anything a tad more precise. Also shows the oak a little more and an extra tannin. Backward, needs more elevage, but very promising. Drink from 2030-2036. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (95-97)The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru has a wonderful, expressive bouquet with shimmering red berry fruit, white flowers and hints of blood orange. Very harmonious and poised. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins. It’s not powerful but tensile with an almost crystalline finish fanning out effortlessly. Superb. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Les Rouges 1er Cru was the last cuvée to finish its malolactic fermentation. The nose has more fruit concentration than the Les Chaumes: a mixture of red and black, hints of black truffle coming through with time, and a touch of sea spray. The palate is medium-bodied with a tensile opening, very poised and animated with filigree tannins framing the finish. Often overlooked within Grivot's panoply of Vosne Premier Crus, this is one that I would seek out. |

Burgundy | 1 | 93-95 (IB) | HK$8,550.00
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)Clear bright ruby purple. The nose flickers in and out, and while there is a fine tensile line of red berry fruit, this is not too demonstrative. Perhaps some of the refined detail of an Echezeaux. A slight sucrosity of strawberry fruit, and very persistent. Very good and extremely typical of Suchots this year. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-92)Not so deep in colour, but quite elegant on the nose. A lighter red fruit profile. Beautifully generous through the middle, perfumed strawberry and raspberry, with a structure built more on acidity than tannin. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: November 2023. |

Burgundy | - | 86-88 (BH) | HK$1,840.00
Burghound (86-88)Bright, fresh and airy aromas of both red and dark pinot fruit are trimmed in discreet earth hints. There is good vibrancy to the delicious middleweight flavors that are shaped by fine-grained tannins on the lightly stony and dusty but not really austere finale. To enjoy after a few years of keeping. |

Burghound (89-92)Outstanding top value A very spicy, airy and layered nose freely reveals its aromas of black raspberry, violet, plum and exotic tea. The gorgeously textured and more refined medium-bodied flavors exude a subtle minerality that also seems to add a sense of lift to the balanced and sneaky long finale. This is a lovely Vosne villages and absolutely worth considering. |
