Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)
Mid lemon. The bouquet indicates a surprising breadth of flavour, as if this were a riper spot, and the attack continues in the same fashion, before the wine tightens up at the back in a crystalline fashion, as the stones take over. Very much a food wine, and one which will reward ageing. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted: October 2023.HK$4,970.00 -

Two separate terroirs, the slope with a little clay topsoil, the plateau just the stones. This shows a little bit of both styles. Broader in the beam, some ripe apple fruits, a little tannic at the finish, fine wine that does not quite challenge the supremacy of En Montceau. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted: October 2023.HK$4,900.00 -

Three plots which come from maternal grandmother Lucie. Mid lemon yellow, with a very pretty bouquet that gives an immediate desire to drink it. A salivating stony finish, beautifully done. Almost tannic says Damien, and even a little saline. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted: October 2023.HK$3,725.00 -

Vinous (91-93)
The 2022 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a mineral-driven, obdurate nose that you might presume derives from a cooler growing season. Subtle petrichor/wet pavement aromas intermix with sea spray. The palate is well-balanced with a lovely creamy texture, vanilla mixed with orange rind and tangerine. There’s fine depth, though I prefer the precision of the VIrondot and Caillerets. However, it will surely mature beautifully in bottle.HK$9,935.38 -

The 2022 Saint-Aubin Charmois 1er Cru, completely frosted in the previous vintage, has a tightly wound nose with crushed stone filtering through malic fruit. It is Puligny-like, terse as that is appealing, with touches of white tea and chamomile. The palate is well-balanced with impressive tension on the entry, gorgeous flecks of white peach and Satsuma with a prickle of ginger on the finish. Seek this out.HK$4,235.00 -

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)
A full mid yellow, much deeper than the Bienvenues. This has all the power, and with finesse too though evidently not as much as the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. The Bâtard has just back from the rugby field. A good example though. 4 barrels made, of which one new. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: November 2023.HK$27,365.00
