Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

5 barrels made and the malolactic is just finishing, so no sulphur has been added yet. Thus the wine is currently a little broad, with baked apples, and significant flesh on the palate. Though the aromatic side is slightly disturbed, the main body of the wine is all in place, with plenty of energy and persistence. This looks like turning into a very good example. Drink from 2030-2038.HK$16,365.00 -

90% is from the Pernand. Side, a third old vines, a third 20 year old, a third 35 year old. And guess what, the youngest are in the worst condition. Some tressed, some worked by winch. Pale colour, a beautifully mineral nose, properly shows its terroir. The wine picks up speed further back on the palate, opening out very nicely. Very attractive. Drink from 2029-2037. Indulge in the opulence of the Rapet Pere et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Greves Rouge 2022, a distinctive expression of Burgundian finesse. Harvested from the esteemed Greves vineyard in Beaune, this classically-cut Burgundy red lends itself to the careful cultivation and vinification practices held by the Rapet family since the 18th century. Crafted with hand-picked Pinot Noir grapes, the wine undergoes traditional fermentation in open vats before maturing in French oak barrels, giving rise to an elegant palate of lush red fruit flavours harmonised by firm, yet refined tannins and an ethereal mineral finish. The Rapet Pere et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Greves Rouge 2022 represents the winery's enduring commitment to authenticity and quality, offering a true taste of the region's revered terroir. Delve into every glass of this inviting red wine's complexity, to appreciate Burgundy's vinous artistry at its finest.

A light crimson ruby colour. The nose is quite refined as well, with a fresh crunchy red fruit, not too much body but more of a linear intensity, and certainly very persistent. Very well balanced. Drink from 2028-2034.HK$2,905.00 -

From the lower part of Le Charlemagne. There is a regular cuvee too. Lively fresh primrose. At the moment the oak shows a little stronger than the wine on the first nose. The fruit is pretty substantial on the palate, starting at the front, then gracefully continues through to a stony and salty finish. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023.HK$11,895.00 -
