Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

An attractive lemon yellow. Just after bottling the oak has taken the higher ground. Good lemon intensity behind the white fruit which fills the middle ground. Quite a fleshy Meursault, though still in balance. Drink from 2026-2033. Tasted: October 2023.HK$9,935.38 -

Not in bottle. Two plots, one of old vines at the southern end, one at the north, slightly younger and more productive. An elegant and charming bouquet which continues across the palate, with a fine crunchy acidity to finish. May not call attention to itself, but it is fine. Drink from 2027-2034. A rich deep purple, super saturated, with a bouquet to match. A full and firm structure with Thomas Collardot’s abundant fruit flowing over the top. A darker fruit with a blackberry note, but not the mulberry which would imply over-ripeness. The 20% whole bunch vinification adds an additional freshness, a slight salinity which works very well. Drink from 2032-2040.HK$10,800.00 -

5 barrels, two from Petit Maupertuis destemmed, three others which are in new barrels and with 100% whole bunch vinification. The Clos Vougeot is very reductive at first, though this starts to blow off. There is a huge volume of fruit though and the two halves seem to marry up. Actually, rather an astonishing weight of fruit at the back of the palate. Definitely a Vin de Garde. This still needs more elevage but is very promising. Drink from 2032-2040. Embodying the heights of French viticulture, the Gros Frere et Soeur Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2022 is a true gem of superior wine. Clustered in the acclaimed region of Burgundy, this wine captures the characteristic subtlety and depth of Pinot Noir. Taking advantage of the remarkable terroir at Clos Vougeot, its development is carefully overseen by the eponymous Gros siblings, whose family legacy in winemaking has extended over a glorious century.
Firmly rooted on slopes blanketed with limestone clay, their vague pronunciation is an ode to meticulous cultivation, traditional vinification methods, and an enduring respect for nature. Aged in French oak, it offers an ethereal bouquet of cherry and plum interspersed with earthy undertones. On the palate, this wine displays immense structure and complexity, met with a soft elegance and a lasting finish that illustrates the emblem of the 'Gros Frere et Soeur Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2022'. A symphony in a bottle, it unquestionably validates the prestige of Burgundy wines.

(5 Star Wine) 100% new Tronçais wood, for April bottling. A deep central core of purple. Very intense indeed without being clumsy. There is a massive structure here to build on, but it is all about the intensity of the fruit. Deep red not black, almost as thrilling as the 2020 Echezeaux. Waves more fruit come flooding back across the palate, with everything in perfect proportion. Drink from 2032-2040+. Tasted: November 2023.HK$20,060.00 -

The 2022 Meursault Clos Richemont 1er Cru is a dense, opulent white built on texture more than anything else. It is one of the most overt wines in the Boillot range. Orange jam, spice, vanillin, lemon confit and baked apple tart infuse the 2022 with tons of textural intensity. This is such a distinctive wine.HK$4,275.00 -

Just bottled. A pretty, light lemon colour. A pleasing fragrance with spring flowers and the lighter side of plum fruit. Generous on the palate with a graphite touch which is probably the oak speaking, a wealth of fruit through the middle and enough flesh to cover the final point of acidity. Fine length as ever. The 2022 Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru is a complex, dynamic wine. I especially admire its focus. Pear, slate, crushed rocks, mint and white pepper all hover across the palate in a Meursault that marries fruit richness with layers of depth and explosive energy. In other words, classic Genevrières. The 2022 is quite reticent today, but I take that as a positive sign for the future. What a gorgeous wine this is.HK$4,525.00 -

The 2022 Meursault Les Poruzots 1er Cru marries fruit intensity with drive. It’s a combination that works so well here. Then again, that is a signature of this part of the vineyard. 5 Star Wine. All domaine fruit now, from Les Chevalières, Luraule. Pelles, Casses Têtes, Petits Charrons. Pale to medium lemon yellow. A generous bouquet speaking clearly of Meursault. A broad bench of ripe white apple fruit with excellent energy, good acidity behind, and notable persistence. Very Meursault and quite delicious. Drink from 2027-2034. A vivid mid purple. The bouquet suggests some concentration but a youthful hiding of the detail. On the palate, this is clearly extremely well-constructed and the deep red fruit fills the mouth. Tannins are fine boned, and there is enough acidity. Let this age quietly for a decade and a fine Clos V will emerge. Drink from 2032-2040.HK$12,365.00 -

The 2022 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a refined and harmonious bouquet with red berry fruit, wild hedgerow and light oyster shell notes, ameliorating all the time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit, truffle and black pepper. It's quite complex and very long on the finish. Superb.HK$7,535.00 -

Light to mid crimson. Intoxicating, floral-layered red fruit with a touch of pepper. On the palate, entirely seductive with intense and pure dark-red fruits. Excellent combination of concentration, freshness and length. Then a savoury aftertaste all tangled up in the tannic elegance.HK$14,060.00 -
