Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Burgundy | - | 90-93 (IB) | HK$8,965.00
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)Medium deep colour, with dark flowers on the nose. Coming in the midst of various spectacular grands crus, I find that the Echezeaux has taken the sunshine to a slightly brutal degree, as reflected by maximum ripeness of the fruit along with some tannins that may have been blocked from maturing fully. The yield was lower which is not always the best thing in hot dry years. It is still a sound wine but has missed out on the more delightful side of 2022. Tasted: October 2023. |

Vinous (96-98)The 2022 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru has darker fruit on the nose than the Clos de la Roche: blackberry and bilberry, crushed violet, and plenty of forest floor commingling with light granitic scents. The terroir really shines through here. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins, very harmonious with a cashmere texture. There’s impressive weight on the finish with outstanding tension. I thought the 2021 was a knockout last year… This is, too. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)5 Star Wine. More of a crimson purple, raspberry seedless, taken a bit of oak, but superlative nonetheless and exceptionally long. Completely mouth filling with great charm, fills all the nooks and crannies. An excellent balance between the fruit acidity and tannins. Still going strong in my mouth several minutes later! Drink from 2032-2040. |

Burgundy | 2 | 95-97 (IB) | HK$21,560.00
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97)A bright pink edge to the purple. Very striking, very immediate, totally red fruit, very convincing essence of raspberry, with some ripe redcurrants behind. Fills the mouth, not quite the same intensity at the back as the Clos de la Roche but the Clos St-Denis does have quality finesse at the finish. Drink from 2030-2038. |

James Suckling (96-97)Quite a shy nose, but on the palate this is so dense without the slightest hint of heaviness. All red fruits with an almost lemony freshness at the long, intensely mineral finish. Great potential! |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)(5 Star Wine) A fine rich mid purple. A bouquet of startling beauty, the fruit profile follows the vintage on its raspberry and cherry axis, but it is the class which counts. This Latricières delivers grand cru intensity in a particularly fine framework, with good acidity as much as tannin to provide the structure. A fine persistent finish. Wonderful wine. Drink from 2034-2042. Tasted: November 2023. |

(3x75cl)
2022
|
|
Burgundy | - | 94-96 (VN (NM)) | HK$8,965.00
Vinous - Neal Martin (94-96)The 2022 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru contains 30% stems this year, which is translated onto the nose distinct from Jadot's other reds: cracked black pepper and damp earth infuse the red fruit and lend the complexity underlying their inclusion. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip and much more depth than the previous vintage, with a slightly powdery/chalky finish. There’s plenty of energy and tension from start to finish; this should age in consummate style. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)Two barrels, both new, 25% whole bunch vinification. Very reductive, partly from the barrel. However, the wine shows through on the palate with just a slightly dry finish. This rougher edge is the reduction speaking. While there is a fair weight of fruit here, the reduction is winning for now, but note that this wine has not yet been racked. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023. |
