Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Burgundy | - | 90-93 (IB) | HK$8,965.00 | ||||
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)Medium deep colour, with dark flowers on the nose. Coming in the midst of various spectacular grands crus, I find that the Echezeaux has taken the sunshine to a slightly brutal degree, as reflected by maximum ripeness of the fruit along with some tannins that may have been blocked from maturing fully. The yield was lower which is not always the best thing in hot dry years. It is still a sound wine but has missed out on the more delightful side of 2022. Tasted: October 2023. |

Completely mouth filling with great charm, fills all the nooks and crannies. An excellent balance between the fruit acidity and tannins. Still going strong in my mouth several minutes later! Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-91)Frédéric Barnier notes that Le Vaucrain is a really balanced vineyard up and down the slope, the interplay of soil and rock, and with good water sources. The 2022 has a bright red fruit, fresh and immediate, plenty of energy, gaining in concentration through the middle, with an agreeable mineral quality to finish. Plenty of fruit to return behind. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-90)Now racked to tank. A glowing crimson to ruby colour of medium density. The bouquet is attractively elegant. Fresh red cherry, a little raspberry behind, tightly wound for the moment but should not take too long to develop into a refined Côte de Nuits-Villages. Drink from 2026-2029. Tasted: December 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-90)Not quite as deep a purple and the nose is a little more refined, less exuberant. There is no shortage of quality fruit on the palate, dark raspberry, a few more tannins, but they are ripe enough. The fruit covers the final structure very nicely. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted: October 2023. |
