Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Medium deep colour, with dark flowers on the nose. Coming in the midst of various spectacular grands crus, I find that the Echezeaux has taken the sunshine to a slightly brutal degree, as reflected by maximum ripeness of the fruit along with some tannins that may have been blocked from maturing fully. The yield was lower which is not always the best thing in hot dry years. It is still a sound wine but has missed out on the more delightful side of 2022. Tasted: October 2023.HK$8,965.00 -

5 Star Wine. A brilliant purple, with a fascinating touch of spice to add to the depth of dark yet royal fruit. Just keeps getting more profound on the nose. Incredibly intense through the middle, excellent mineral acidity behind, and a length well above the others. Thank you for this perfection.HK$9,935.38 -

Purple colour. A very heady nose, luxurious, nothing cooked. A consistent, coherent richness throughout, with a raft of tannins to finish, but they do not dry out the wine at all. A final ball of dark cherry fruit at the very end. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023.HK$11,700.00 -

5 Star Wine. More of a crimson purple, raspberry seedless, taken a bit of oak, but superlative nonetheless and exceptionally long. Completely mouth filling with great charm, fills all the nooks and crannies. An excellent balance between the fruit acidity and tannins. Still going strong in my mouth several minutes later! Drink from 2032-2040.HK$12,670.00 -

(from a 1.29 ha parcel). A classic Bèze nose of spice, earth and plenty of floral influence leads to succulent and round yet decidedly intense, muscular and powerful flavors that coat the mouth with sappy dry extract while delivering huge length on the seamlessly balanced if moderately austere finish. The 2022 Richebourg Grand Cru is brilliant, mingling aromas of dark berries and plums with notions of blood orange, rose petals, exotic spices and smoke in an incipiently complex mélange. Full-bodied, deep and complete, it's seamless and multidimensional, its layered core of fruit almost entirely concealing its ample endowment of sweet, powdery tannin.HK$38,250.00 -

A glowing crimson purple. A certain nobility to the nose. A brilliant combination of hedonism and precision, the expressive dense floral notes, waves of perfectly ripe red fruit, and that’s just the bouquet. Suave, sweetly fruited, nuanced, yet never losing site of the grace and the depth. Caresses all parts. Seamless finish with perfect acid and tannin balance. Drink from 2034-2045+. A fine crimson colour. The bouquet is immediately appealing showing a distinction not yet apparent in the Chapelle-Chambertin, though that will come. This is the more structured of the two, possibly even a little bit stern, but with a wealth of high-class fruit behind where the refinement begins to show. Drink from 2032-2040+. 30% decorticated, all new wood. A glowing imperial purple. What a wealth of fruit is here, how noble in reason. In another league from the other grands crus chez Thibault. I think the finest Richebourg I have seen from him. There is a coconut effect from the wood. The mid palate is particularly intense. An intense red fruit note, then dark raspberry, and the finish is completely swamped by the fruit. Drink from 2035-2045. Tasted: November 2023.HK$9,587.60 -
