Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

10% new wood, about to be bottled. The Bourgogne offers a heavenly nose right from the start. All about the fruit which has a darker edge to it. The stem side gives a real tingle. Now some dark red cherries in the fruit. Salty notes at the very back. A tannin or two to finish. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted: November 2023.HK$2,685.00 -

The 2022 Bourgogne Blanc is superb. It offers up hints of apricot, baked apple tart, spice, vanillin and tangerine oil. Rich, dense and creamy, the Bourgogne Blanc hugely overdelivers. Henri Boillot offers a lot of wine here.HK$2,820.00 -

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97)
5 Star Wine. Mid yellow, with a biscuity touch. Seems unsubtle until you get to the palate which is super powerful but also with subtlety. This Monopole vineyard comprises four distinct terroirs though they are always assembled. An electric backbone stops the power overturning the balance. Yellow fruit, and then an extraordinary, indeed grand cru, weight. Incisive white fruit finish. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023.HK$9,587.60 -

Middling deep yellow. A little oak on the nose, but otherwise high class predominantly orchard fruit. This is more nuanced than the Folatières, entirely white fruit and a good balance between the clay and the minerals. An excellent and persistent finish. Drink from 2029-2036. 5 Star Wine. Mid yellow in colour. A light biscuity touch alongside a properly floral bouquet, this is remarkably stylish while evidently also suggesting full ripeness. Several waves of flavour with the fruit becoming ever fresher the further back it goes, finishing on a very pure white fruit, scarcely marked by the oak at all. A brilliant village Puligny. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: December 2023.HK$4,275.00 -
Savour the luxurious Heritiers Comte Lafon Macon Bussieres Monsard 2022, steeped in the rich history of Comte Lafon's family vineyard, a renowned owner within Burgundy's prestigious Macon region. The 2022 Bourgogne Blanc Hautes-Côtes de Nuits is aged in 15% new larger 450-liter oak barrels. It has a light nose with yellow plum and touches of ginger, but it needs a little more energy and tension. The palate is better than the nose, lovely and balanced with a slightly honeyed texture. It's not long-term, but it should drink well for the next 3-4 years.HK$1,295.00 -

The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru comes mainly from Hameau de Blagny. This is well-defined and focused on the nose: orchard fruit, grass clippings, and glimpses of exotic scents such as guava and passion fruit. Very pure in style. The palate is well-balanced with more tension than the Les Enseignères, a touch of reduction lending complexity on the finish. Promising.HK$3,925.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)
Pale lime tints to the colour. Quite closed on the nose, a little positive reduction, plenty of energy but tightly wound. Then a significant concentration of pure white fruit, evidently with plenty more to give later on. I did not quite find the anticipated personality and intensity, but this may just be going through a very closed stage. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: October 2023.HK$5,965.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)
Pretty pale primrose in colour. The bouquet is a little more open, showing slightly riper fruit than the more chiselled Clos de la Pucelle. Quite a complex range of flavours with some ripe citrus zest, a mix of yellow fruit, yet nothing over opulent. There is plenty more to discover from this wine which finishes with a fine refreshing acidity. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2023.HK$5,965.00 -

Pale lemon yellow. The bouquet is really quite striking, with a floral top note above a wealth of fruit with perfectly judged ripeness. Plenty of energy on the palate, as seems to be the case widely in 2022, with a little yellow plum fruit and ripe citrus to finish. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: October 2023.HK$4,770.00 -

Jean-Michel has a contract to farm an extra five ouvrées of Puligny from the commune for five years. Mid lemon and lime. Fresh and floral, with a good fresh backbone, slight lime blossom. Attractive mid crimson purple. A little more reserved on the nose yet with swelling fruit across the palate, a little fresh pepper at the finish which just enlivens the wine and adds a mineral touch. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted: November 2023.HK$2,330.00
