Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

An attractive lemon yellow. Just after bottling the oak has taken the higher ground. Good lemon intensity behind the white fruit which fills the middle ground. Quite a fleshy Meursault, though still in balance. Drink from 2026-2033. Tasted: October 2023.HK$9,935.38 -

Not in bottle. Two plots, one of old vines at the southern end, one at the north, slightly younger and more productive. An elegant and charming bouquet which continues across the palate, with a fine crunchy acidity to finish. May not call attention to itself, but it is fine. Drink from 2027-2034. An additional fresh purple density. Rich purple, with a depth of fruit to match. Quite special. I love the balance of this in the mouth, a dense and quite exuberant red fruit, brought back at the finish to the typical savoury style of Morey, long and fine. Darker fruit at the finish. Drink from 2028-2035.HK$3,500.00 -

From the usual four vineyards. Deep crimson. The bouquet has quite an elegant style even if the individual fruits are not yet quite with us. Quite a firm structure behind but sitting well with the deep red fruit. Balanced and stylish, with good ageing potential. Drink from 2031-2038. Tasted: November 2023.HK$9,587.60 -

Glowing purple. There is a fine weight of fruit, building steadily, lifting deep cherry notes, with an excellent texture, serge not silk, but it provides a fine backbone. I can see this ageing into a classic Dujac village Morey, always one of Burgundy’s great village wines. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023.HK$9,587.60 -

Sample taken from new and one year old barrel. A rich and even purple, with a dash of new wood. The wood gives an extra dimension which will need to integrate but the essential joyous nature of this hillside vineyard shines through. He thinks he has the best balance here since he started the exchange deal to get these grapes in 2015. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: December 2023HK$3,490.00 -

The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis Clos Sorbé 1er Cru has a lovely bouquet with more floral tones than the Les Millandes, wilted violets infusing the black and red fruit, fine mineralité coming from the limestone soils. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, quite fresh and saline, with a cohesive, very "controlled" finish that lends this wine verticality. Very sapid. Give this 3-4 years in bottle.HK$2,685.00 -

The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis La Riotte 1er Cru is a tiny production matured each year in a single, tailor-made "Aphrodite" barrel from the Cavin cooperage. This vintage is just 400 liters. Because of the very light toasting, the new oak does not impede the aromatics: brambly red berry fruit and fish scale touches. The palate is medium-bodied with a ripe, sweet and slightly candied opening, offering blood orange-laced fleshy red fruit, with vanilla towards the finish. It is very seductive, and despite the new oak, the structure suggests this will be more approachable than Legros's other cuvées.HK$3,280.00 -

The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes 1er Cru comes from two parcels, one planted north-south and the other east-west. Its attractive bouquet offers brambly red berry fruit, forest floor and light black truffle scents. There is good complexity here; it is very composed. The palate is well-balanced, with good depth and gentle grip. There is mainly black fruit here with plenty of freshness and mineralité. The finish has commendable precision and feels long and tender. Excellent.HK$2,875.00 -

30% new wood, including one 400 litre barrel, which is the way Jean-Pierre will go in future for the first year, and then earthenware jars for the second elevage. A touch of liquorice. Just bottled. A pretty, light lemon colour. A pleasing fragrance with spring flowers and the lighter side of plum fruit. Generous on the palate with a graphite touch which is probably the oak speaking, a wealth of fruit through the middle and enough flesh to cover the final point of acidity. Fine length as ever. The 2022 Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru is a complex, dynamic wine. I especially admire its focus. Pear, slate, crushed rocks, mint and white pepper all hover across the palate in a Meursault that marries fruit richness with layers of depth and explosive energy. In other words, classic Genevrières. The 2022 is quite reticent today, but I take that as a positive sign for the future. What a gorgeous wine this is.HK$4,525.00 -
