Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)
100% new wood, to bottle in April. The wood comes from mixed forests, as Jean-Pierre thinks Tronçais doesn’t work here. A bright fresh crimson ruby. More floral more sensual, the early morning rose says Jean-Pierre. This is more quintessentially Vosne than the Brûlées, with a lifted and balanced flair, a mix of darked red fruits, avoiding the blacker side. White pepper spice becomes more apparent at the end. A thick velvet coat of fruit throughout. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023.HK$9,587.60 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)
(5 Star Wine) Deep ruby crimson colour. At this end of the scale the power of the fruit and the vineyard character completely outweigh the vinification. 100% new wood (Tronçais) is invisible. Instead, we find the slaty and singed character of the vineyard, plus an astonishing wealth of fruit. A thickness of texture which is extraordinary. Quite stunning this year with the blood red depth of fruit. Enough acidity behind and exceptional pure as well as concentrated. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023.HK$16,100.00 -

40% new wood, December bottling. Far from the deepest in colour, but definitely not the least elegant either! Rose petals abound. A few fresh alpine strawberries too. This has remarkable tension on the palate and is almost as nuanced as an Echezeaux (at least as, Jean-Pierre thinks!). Certainly there is a gorgeous, almost glossy aftertaste. Highest pH. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: November 2023.HK$13,625.00 -

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)
100% new wood, to bottle in April. A rich purple colour, more saturated. Less floral than the regular Vosne, more in little red fruits. Excellent density, bright fruit backed by a little liquorice note, while the structure behind indicates that this will need time to come round. Drink from 2029-2037. Tasted: November 2023.HK$6,910.00 -

Vinous (93-95)
The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru has the ripest and most sensual of Magnien's cuvées on the nose, adorned with lush red cherry, raspberry and light fig scents. There's a soupçon of exoticism in situ. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, quite fleshy in the mouth with good grip and density. There is more horsepower even when contrasted against the Ruchottes-Chambertin. Lingers wonderfully on the finish. Excellent.HK$5,675.00 -
Burghound (90-93)
(from a .33 ha holding of ~55-year-old vines). This is aromatically quite similar to the Champeaux with perhaps just a bit more elegance. The mid-palate mouthfeel of the medium-bodied flavors is finer still with more minerality as well that adds a sense of lift to the moderately austere finish where the supporting tannins are firm and slightly angular. I like the balance but this will need time to round off the structureHK$6,675.00 -

Vinous (90-92)
The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes comes from eight parcels from 40 years old to some planted in 1915. Always one of my favorite cuvées from Magnien, this is more defined and energetic than the regular Gevrey, offering Morello cherries, strawberries and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins and a mixture of red and black fruit, supple in texture. It is not a concentrated Gevrey but feels very cohesive towards the finish. Give this puppy a couple of years in bottle.HK$2,990.00 -
Savour the luxurious Heritiers Comte Lafon Macon Bussieres Monsard 2022, steeped in the rich history of Comte Lafon's family vineyard, a renowned owner within Burgundy's prestigious Macon region. This typically elegant Chardonnay proffers the impeccable advantage of the Lafon heritage, underpinned by the family's traditional biodynamic viticulture practices and low-intervention philosophy in the cellar.
Grown in the venerable limestone soils, each grape is hand-picked and gently pressed to ensure the unique nuances of the fruit are captured. This particular vintage, following a languid maturation in aged barrels, exudes unrivalled minerality and bespoke terroir characteristics. Notes of pear, quince, and white blossom freely intertwine with a crisp, bright finish, defining an articulation of the inimitable Macon Bussieres terroir.
Heritiers Comte Lafon Macon Bussieres Monsard 2022: a sublime embodiment of the Lafon legacy, an outstanding testament to the excellence of the Macon region.

The 2022 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots is one of the highlights of the range this year. Wafting from the glass with aromas of plums, cassis, orange zest and exotic spices and framed by a deft application of new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and multidimensional, with terrific depth, velvety tannins and a long, broad finish.HK$6,335.00 -

A bright ruby purple. Like the Chambolle the bouquet is all about a primary energy. The Vosne is if anything a tad more precise. Also shows the oak a little more and an extra tannin. Backward, needs more elevage, but very promising. Drink from 2030-2036.HK$4,225.00 -

The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru has a wonderful, expressive bouquet with shimmering red berry fruit, white flowers and hints of blood orange. Very harmonious and poised. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins. It’s not powerful but tensile with an almost crystalline finish fanning out effortlessly. Superb.HK$5,635.00 -

The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Les Rouges 1er Cru was the last cuvée to finish its malolactic fermentation. The nose has more fruit concentration than the Les Chaumes: a mixture of red and black, hints of black truffle coming through with time, and a touch of sea spray. The palate is medium-bodied with a tensile opening, very poised and animated with filigree tannins framing the finish. Often overlooked within Grivot's panoply of Vosne Premier Crus, this is one that I would seek out.HK$7,095.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)
Clear bright ruby purple. The nose flickers in and out, and while there is a fine tensile line of red berry fruit, this is not too demonstrative. Perhaps some of the refined detail of an Echezeaux. A slight sucrosity of strawberry fruit, and very persistent. Very good and extremely typical of Suchots this year. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023.HK$8,175.00 -

Not so deep in colour, but quite elegant on the nose. A lighter red fruit profile. Beautifully generous through the middle, perfumed strawberry and raspberry, with a structure built more on acidity than tannin. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: November 2023.HK$3,550.00 -

The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs Perrières Vieilles Vignes takes time to cohere in the glass, predominantly red fruit here, quite a pronounced saline element. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black cherry fruit, gentle grip, quite peppery in style with a cohesive finish. It just needs a little more persistency.HK$3,925.00 -

Burghound (89-92)
Outstanding top value A very spicy, airy and layered nose freely reveals its aromas of black raspberry, violet, plum and exotic tea. The gorgeously textured and more refined medium-bodied flavors exude a subtle minerality that also seems to add a sense of lift to the balanced and sneaky long finale. This is a lovely Vosne villages and absolutely worth considering.HK$4,225.00 -

Jancis Robinson (17.5)
Mid cherry red. Bright red-fruited aroma, more cranberry in its impression of freshness. The stems showing in a light herbal note. Stems adding to the tannins on the palate, too, but they are so polished. Needs more time than some to silkify. Pure and deep with a touch of oak spice and sweetness on the very end. Impressive depth of fruit and great length.HK$4,770.00 -
