Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Wine Advocate (91)Piuze's new 2022 Chablis La Butte "O" comes from the lieu-dit Butteaux but outside the confines of the premier cru. It's an attractive effort redolent of pear, toasted nuts, bee pollen, white flowers and youthful reduction. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, with racy acids and a long mineral finish, it's a fine addition to the range. |

Exuding unparalleled sophistication, the Samuel Billaud Chablis 1er Cru Les Vaillons 2022 is a testament to the finesse of French viticulture. Made by the world-renowned winemaker, Samuel Billaud, this wine has been crafted with much veneration for centuries-old traditions. Produced in the esteemed Chablis region, the wine boasts the distinctive Kimmeridgian soil's minerality. Handpicked Chardonnay grapes are meticulously vinified, with sensitive oak ageing to balance opulence with sublime freshness. The Samuel Billaud Chablis 1er Cru Les Vaillons 2022 encapsulates the essence of its terroir, resulting in a wine permeated with piercingly pure citrus aromas, elegantly punctuated by subtle flint and floral notes. The palate is compelling; a profound minerality underpins the luscious fruitiness, while a kernel of acidity ensures a prodigious finish. A singular exemplar of the Chablis Premier Cru appellation, the Samuel Billaud Chablis 1er Cru Les Vaillons 2022 is, unequivocally, a paragon of fine winemaking. |

Burgundy | - | 93-95 (VN) | HK$2,840.00
Vinous (93-95)The 2022 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru comes from two parcels (one in Haut Chapelot near Raveneau and the other in Montée de Tonnerre lieu-dit). The strict nose has crushed stone scents, hints of damp moss and sea cave. Very fine delineation. The palate has a penetrating entry with another killer line of acidity. It is tensile and steely with serious weight towards the grippy finish. Very sustained, this is a brilliant Montée de Tonnerre. |

Burgundy | 1 | 93 (DC) | HK$2,440.00
Decanter (93)Appealing already, warm and with a sunny disposition on the palate, there is plenty of driving acidity to balance. Billaud explains that the white clay gives more power. Plenty of tension here. Will age. Not at all overripe. A fine example of Montmains with the vines averaging 35 years old. No barrels. |

Samuel Billaud Chablis 1er Cru Sechet

|
Burgundy | - | 95 (DC) | HK$2,740.00
Decanter (95)A special bottling from vines more than 90 years old: a vineyard marked by a high proportion of stones and old rootstock. Although it ages as well as Montée de Tonnerre, Billaud's Séchet will finish in a different place. Matured only in stainless steel for 18 months on lees with one racking, it's really very classy and long. A great combination of pear fruit, touch of sunny peach on the palate with abundant minerality to finish. |

Burgundy | 2 | 92 (DC) | HK$1,345.00
Decanter (92)Pretty forceful, direct acidity here. Classic Chablis style. Will age. Comes from two plots situated on the left bank of the Serein, with one positioned below Montée de Tonnerre. They are fermented and kept separate before blending. Mostly hand-harvested. |

Wine Advocate (93-96)A brilliant wine in the making, Dauvissat's 2022 Chablis 1er Cru La Forest unfurls in the glass with youthfully reductive scents of citrus oil, crisp stone fruit, white flowers, oyster shell and subtle hints of orange blossom. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, with superb depth at the core and an electric finish, this cuvée has navigated the vintage's extremes with ease. |

Wine Advocate (92-94)The 2022 Chablis 1er Cru Séchet unwinds in the glass with aromas of crisp stone fruits, ripe lemons, white flowers, clear honey and subtle hints of warm spices. Medium to full-bodied, cool and satiny, the vintage has lent this a gracious charm that isn't always typical of young Séchet, but the wine's searingly mineral signature remains front and center. |

Wine Advocate (95-97)The 2022 Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses unwinds in the glass with aromas of oyster shell, orange blossom, warm stones and subtle hints of citrus oil—this cuvée is almost always more about rocks than fruit. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and electric, it's racy and tensile, with a long, resonant finish. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-98)Two barrels made. A glowing pale lemon and lime colour. Though the barrels are not new they still lend a touch of coconut to this sublimely opulent Montrachet. The riches are properly balanced on the palate though, with waves of perfectly ripe fruit sweeping through the mouth. Some tropical notes, and lower in acidity to taste, thanks to the power of the fruit. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: November 2023. |
