Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Not in bottle. Pale colour with a green tint. A lean and lively fruit here, which builds into a white fruit energy, a crisper finish, tightly wound, quite impressive potential. Very millerand, small crop, high skin to juice ratio, which delivers the concentration and the slightly tannic finish. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023.HK$3,550.00 -

An attractive lemon yellow. Just after bottling the oak has taken the higher ground. Good lemon intensity behind the white fruit which fills the middle ground. Quite a fleshy Meursault, though still in balance. Drink from 2026-2033. Tasted: October 2023.HK$9,935.38 -

Not in bottle. Two plots, one of old vines at the southern end, one at the north, slightly younger and more productive. An elegant and charming bouquet which continues across the palate, with a fine crunchy acidity to finish. May not call attention to itself, but it is fine. Drink from 2027-2034. Laurent characterises Argillats as a hot and cold terroir. 15% whole bunch vinification, 3 barrels of which two new. Not quite so deep in colour and a little lighter in fruit, though the oak marks the nose, and the palate. Nonetheless, I think the fruit will fight through, and it has an appealing fresh red fruit quality. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted: November 2023.HK$3,625.00 -

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Damodes 1er Cru is aged in 50% new oak and completely de-stemmed. This is pleasingly floral on the nose, with wilted roses filtering through the raspberry and redcurrant fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and a keen line of acidity. This is very elegant in style, with a composed and transparent finish. What a lovely Les Damodes from Faiveley.HK$4,495.00 -

The Les St Georges comes under the negociant label, Joseph Faiveley, as the produce of their own vines is mixed with two other sources, one of which is the Hospices de Nuits. A deep crimson colour. The bouquet is relatively luxurious, a super succulent ripe raspberry, with very good tension behind. This seems very young, but the abundant fruit and the structure are promising. The fruit on the palate is fresher than for the village Nuits. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.HK$9,587.60 -

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Village comes from two parcels, two-thirds from Les Lavières. This fragrant, Vosne-like bouquet offers pretty blueberry and black cherry fruit that seem to blossom in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied and incorporates the 30% whole bunches with style. It is very cohesive with a sorbet-fresh, live-wire finish, leaving a dash of residual white pepper to linger in the mouth.HK$3,370.00 -

The 2022 Aloxe-Corton Village was partially affected by hail and is the only cuvée to include whole bunches, which works well on the nose and has more freshness than the Pernand-Vergelesses Les Fichets. The palate is medium-bodied with blackberry and raspberry fruit, fine tannins, and good tension on the finish. Delightful.HK$2,725.00 -

Mid crimson, with very little nose. The is a wealth of red fruit, but then the tannins are rather dry. This cuvée is usually a little more elegant. The finish suggests though that this will all come together. Drink from 2027-2030. Tasted: October 2023.HK$2,745.00 -

The first to be picked, which is unusual. A mid crimson colour with some dark raspberry and plum fruit, showing a bit more than the Chapitre. A succulent rich raspberry fruit on the palate., some tannins but nicely interwoven. The two Aloxe 1ers Crus seem to have traded places this year, and for once I have a clear preference for the Vercots. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023.HK$3,470.00 -

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Thorey 1er Cru, which has just been bottled, has a feisty bouquet with macerated red cherries, black currant and light violet aromas borrowed from over the boundary in Vosne-Romanée. The well-balanced palate has a sorbet-like freshness, candied orange peel interwoven through the mainly black fruit, and a spicy/black pepper-tinged finish. Give this a couple of years in bottle - it is an excellent NSG that may improve with bottle age.HK$3,280.00 -

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Bousselots 1er Cru comes from a parcel located slightly lower down the incline than the Aux Thorey, the vines around 50 years old. It has a well-defined and more composed bouquet with vivacious redcurrant, wild strawberry, and blood orange scents, very focused and energetic. The medium-bodied palate has fine tannins, very precise and pure, with good tension and complexity, and a mineral-rich, complex finish. This may be the best Nuit Saint-Georges I have tasted from Legros. Highly recommended.HK$2,735.00 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (92)
The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Perrières 1er Cru has a very harmonious bouquet, seductive with slightly richer Morello cherries, wild strawberries and raspberry fruit, just a touch of sous-bois manifesting with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a riper entry than Legros's other cuvées. It has moderate weight, tapering slightly towards the finish when you want it to fan out (like the Bousselots). There’s fine mineralité though I feel it will have more to offer with bottle age.HK$3,280.00 -

Pinot blanc, filtered but not fined, and ready to bottle. 30% new wood and 13.46% alcohol. This is the first time this wine has hit the yield since he purchased the vineyard in 2006. Just bottled. A pretty, light lemon colour. A pleasing fragrance with spring flowers and the lighter side of plum fruit. Generous on the palate with a graphite touch which is probably the oak speaking, a wealth of fruit through the middle and enough flesh to cover the final point of acidity. Fine length as ever. The 2022 Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru is a complex, dynamic wine. I especially admire its focus. Pear, slate, crushed rocks, mint and white pepper all hover across the palate in a Meursault that marries fruit richness with layers of depth and explosive energy. In other words, classic Genevrières. The 2022 is quite reticent today, but I take that as a positive sign for the future. What a gorgeous wine this is.HK$4,525.00
