Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Vinous (88-90)
The 2022 Aloxe-Corton Village was partially affected by hail and is the only cuvée to include whole bunches, which works well on the nose and has more freshness than the Pernand-Vergelesses Les Fichets. The palate is medium-bodied with blackberry and raspberry fruit, fine tannins, and good tension on the finish. Delightful.HK$2,725.00 -

Mid crimson, with very little nose. The is a wealth of red fruit, but then the tannins are rather dry. This cuvée is usually a little more elegant. The finish suggests though that this will all come together. Drink from 2027-2030. Tasted: October 2023.HK$2,745.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-92)
The first to be picked, which is unusual. A mid crimson colour with some dark raspberry and plum fruit, showing a bit more than the Chapitre. A succulent rich raspberry fruit on the palate., some tannins but nicely interwoven. The two Aloxe 1ers Crus seem to have traded places this year, and for once I have a clear preference for the Vercots. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023.HK$3,470.00 -

Just bottled. A pretty, light lemon colour. A pleasing fragrance with spring flowers and the lighter side of plum fruit. Generous on the palate with a graphite touch which is probably the oak speaking, a wealth of fruit through the middle and enough flesh to cover the final point of acidity. Fine length as ever. The 2022 Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru is a complex, dynamic wine. I especially admire its focus. Pear, slate, crushed rocks, mint and white pepper all hover across the palate in a Meursault that marries fruit richness with layers of depth and explosive energy. In other words, classic Genevrières. The 2022 is quite reticent today, but I take that as a positive sign for the future. What a gorgeous wine this is.HK$4,525.00 -

The 2022 Meursault Les Poruzots 1er Cru marries fruit intensity with drive. It’s a combination that works so well here. Then again, that is a signature of this part of the vineyard. Crushed rocks, lemon peel, mint, white pepper and light tropical notes all come alive with some time in the glass.HK$6,760.00 -

5 Star Wine. All domaine fruit now, from Les Chevalières, Luraule. Pelles, Casses Têtes, Petits Charrons. Pale to medium lemon yellow. A generous bouquet speaking clearly of Meursault. A broad bench of ripe white apple fruit with excellent energy, good acidity behind, and notable persistence. Very Meursault and quite delicious. Drink from 2027-2034. Burghound (90-92)
A cooler and airier nose somewhat grudgingly displays its array of various dark berries, especially black raspberry, violet and a hint of wet stone character. The fleshy, rich and nicely textured medium weight flavors exhibit even more minerality on the youthfully austere, compact and serious finale. This balanced effort is textbook Es Chezots and should repay 8 to 12 years of keeping.HK$9,587.60 -

The 2022 Marsannay Blanc Les Longeroies has a backward, slightly reductive, flinty bouquet, suggesting it will benefit from time in bottle. The well-balanced palate is tensile and edgy with a keen thread of acidity. Bitter lemon and orange rind enliven the finish. Good potential.HK$1,855.00 -

Vinous (91-93)
The 2022 Marsannay Les Longeroies offers blackberry, wild hedgerow and forest floor scents on the nose, with a faint hint of black olive. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit and fine tannins. There is a little compactness towards the finish at the moment, but it is surfeit with freshness and tension. A hint of white pepper surfaces on the aftertaste. What a lovely Marsannay this will be.HK$1,855.00 -

Here the nose displays that peculiar kind of reduction called bourgeon de cassis, or cassis bud, that crowds out more interesting notes. (the name refers to a small tower located just behind the domaine; the fruit comes from 6 different lieux-dits). A more floral-suffused nose presents a range of aromas that include violet, dark currant and black cherry. The 2022 Marsannay Trois Terres Vieilles Vignes has discrete touches of fish scale and black olive on the nose, married neatly with the black fruit. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet entry. Touches of fig and dates tincture the black fruit. Was this picked just a day or two later than optimal? It feels too sweet for my liking and compared to the previous vintage.HK$2,870.00 -
