Vinous (86)The 2020 Chardonnay Watson Ranch is light and lacking in both flavor development and depth. With fires advancing, this fruit was brought in five days earlier than normal. The 2020 was also bottled about six months earlier than is typical here. It will be interesting to see if time in bottle helps the 2020 come together a bit more. Today, it is decidedly awkward. |

James Suckling (92)The expressive and elegant nose is loaded with fruit. Crushed blueberries, strawberries, currants, sour cherries, fine spices and violets. Linear and really juicy and bright on the crunchy, medium-bodied palate with vibrant red and blue fruit and tight yet silky tannins. Pure and really drinkable and textured, even though it is not quite profound. Precise. 53% cabernet sauvignon, 21% cabernet franc, 12% marselan, 8% syrah and 6% merlot. Enjoy now. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (97)The 2020 Beau-Sejour Becot is a dense, powerful wine. A rush of black cherry, plum, chocolate, new leather, licorice, spice and sweet oak builds as this towering, vertically explosive Saint-Émilion opens in the glass. This is an especially broad, expansive Saint-Émilion, much of that attributable to the clay in these soils. The 2020 is magnificent in its intensity and overall volume. Superb. |

Marlborough | 1 | 18 (JR) | HK$2,540.00
Jancis Robinson (18)Seductive and well-judged ‘reductive’ (smoky, struck-match) aroma and really toasty as it opens up, something cedary. Very Coche Dury but, most importantly, there is the fruit intensity to carry off this winemaking style. Nutty, creamy, mealy citrus. So many things going on that it makes you slow down to try to enjoy all this complexity. Deep, deliciously fresh and incredibly persistent with an aftertaste of savoury/mineral citrus. Worth every penny of its NZ price of $45 (from the producer's website). Classy and got better and better over the few days post opening. |

Wine Advocate (99)The nose of the 2020 White Bones Chardonnay is an explosion of thyme and rockrose, aromatic, open, expressive, outspoken, showy and exuberant. It also has notes of white flowers and citrus, pine needles and incense, continuously developing new layers, curry, something smoky, more and more aromatic herbs, nuanced, complex and with a magnetic attraction that makes you go back to the glass over and over again. This was harvested all at the same time, whereas it was sometimes harvested over four different moments in the past; so this is a bit different and an extraordinary year for this wine, transcending the conditions of the year, with lower alcohol and pH (12.5% and 3.1) than the 2021, despite coming from a warmer year. This is very tasty and long, stony (more than White Stones!) and very persistent. Amazing juice! 5,760 bottles produced. |

Emilia Romagna | 3 | 92+ (VN) | HK$930.00
Vinous (92+)The 2020 Sangiovese Romagna Predappio is spicy and deep, with sweet rose and dusty black cherries accentuated by hints of ash and mint. This is undeniably elegant in feel, washing silken waves of ripe wild berries across the palate that leave a mineral staining, along with sweet inner herbal tones. It finishes with a lingering concentration and super-fine tannins as tobacco and cocoa notes slowly fade. The 2020 will require a bit more time in bottle to soften its contours, but it’s packed full of potential. It’s hard to think of this as Chaira Condello’s entry-level wine. |

Bordeaux | 1 | 96-98+ (JD) | HK$4,190.00
Jeb Dunnuck (96-98+)I continue to love the wines from this estate, and the 2020 Château Clinet is no exception. Straight-up sensational notes of blueberries, cassis, violets, tobacco, and earth all emerge from the glass, and this beauty is full-bodied, with a rich, concentrated mid-palate, flawless balance, and a great finish. It shows the tighter, fresher, more focused style of the vintage, yet it still brings plenty of mid-palate depth as well as an expansive texture. It has enough oak to warrant short-term bottle age but will have 25-30 years of overall longevity. This is a gorgeous wine. |

Burgundy | 1 | 94 (VN) | HK$4,199.00
Vinous (94)The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet La Boudriotte 1er Cru is very floral on the nose with pressed white flowers, honeysuckle and broom, touches of chalk and apricot. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, more density than the La Grande Montagne, impressive weight and salinity that gets the saliva flowing on the finish. Excellent. |

Vinous (97)Sweet rose petal, mint, chiseled red-toned fruit and chalk give the 2014 Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn its sculpted, brilliant personality. All the elements are in the right place. A wine of translucent energy and weightless elegance, the Sorì Tildìn is hauntingly beautiful today. A host of floral notes and red berry fruit infuse the persistent, chiseled finish in this fabulous Barbaresco. As it so often is, the Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn is a wine of pure charm and seduction. |

Bordeaux | 1 | 95 (VN (NM)) | HK$4,700.00
Vinous - Neal Martin (95)The 2014 Léoville Poyferré has a very complex bouquet with blackberry, bilberry, crushed stone, cedar and hints of violet. It is extremely focused, intense rather than overtly powerful. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp and generous, conveying much more tension and precision than the Léoville Las-Cases. It gradually fans out in the second half with real mineralité, quite profound in the context of the vintage. Outstanding. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. |

Bordeaux | 1 | 89 (WA) | HK$2,095.00
Wine Advocate (89)The 2014 Lions de Batailley was the first vintage albeit one produced in a small quantity as a test, according to proprietor Philippe Castèja. It has an attractive bouquet with dense blackberry, crushed strawberry, bay leaf and cedar scents that unfold nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, grippy in the mouth with good density and freshness on the graphite-tinged finish. Frankly, it is as good as some of the Grand Vins from the 1990s. |

Bordeaux | 2 | 95 (VN (NM)) | HK$1,465.00
Vinous - Neal Martin (95)The 2020 Malartic-Lagravière, which represents just 40% of the total production, was cropped at 26hL/ha. It has a very delineated nose with intense blackberry, raspberry, sous-bois and incense aromas that just "sing" of Pessac-Léognan. The palate is medium-bodied, finely-knit tannins, fresh and vibrant with beguiling purity. Harmonious and silky smooth, it belies the depth and complexity of this marvelous Malartic. This is superb and it will mature beautifully in bottle. |

Vinous (95)The 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Campitello emerges from the oldest vines, planted about 55 years ago. It is also one of the very finest wines I have tasted at Monteraponi. Deep and beautifully layered, the 2020 offers up an exotic mélange of dark fruit mixed with hints of lavender, spice and sage. Time in the glass brings out the wine's striking inner sweetness and perfume. This vivid, explosive Riserva is endowed with tremendous depth and explosive energy. The 2020 spent 24 months in cask. |

Vinous (91)This young Clos de la Coulée de Serrant is soft, round and mouthfilling. The fruit quality of the 2020 is concentrated and succulent without weight, but there's a light farmyardy character to the wine. Offering excellent grip and a fiery schist-derived finish. The alcohol (14.5%) is lightly warming but compared with some previous vintages, it's a little better judged. |

Piedmont | 1 | 95 (WA) | HK$1,900.00
Wine Advocate (95)The 2020 Barbaresco boasts an ample set of aromas with wild cherry, blue flower, sweet spice and crushed limestone. As always, the wine paints an exciting and authentic portrait of Nebbiolo, albeit with a little more richness and texture in this vintage. This is especially true in terms of the palate, where the wine offers mid-weight intensity with melting tannins. This ambitious release of 300,000 bottles is slated to hit the market in fall 2023. |

Rhone | 1 | 95 (VN) | HK$3,445.00
Vinous (95)Saturated ruby. Highly perfumed aromas of ripe dark berries, cherry, olive and pungent flowers are sharpened by a suggestion of black pepper. Supple and appealingly sweet, offering concentrated black raspberry, cherry-cola and violet pastille flavors and a suggestion of star anise. Finishes pliant, sweet and focused on the penetrating finish, showing smooth tannins and excellent tenacity. |

James Suckling (97)Violets and lavender with dark fruit and hints of dark chocolate. Sophisticated nose. Medium-bodied with fine tannin structure that gives this finesse and beauty. It’s very long and goes on for minutes. Precision. 68% sangiovese with the rest in cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon. Drinkable but better in three or four years. |
