Haut-Médoc

Haut-Médoc is a world-renowned wine region located on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, home to some of the most prestigious and sought-after wines in the world. The Haut-Médoc appellation covers a vast area of about 4,600 hectares, stretching from the outskirts of Bordeaux to the tip of the Médoc peninsula, and encompassing some of the most iconic appellations in Bordeaux, such as MargauxSaint-JulienPauillac, and Saint-Estèphe. These actually account for the majority of the wines produced within the Haut-Médoc and have their own AOC. The more general title is used for vineyards lying outside these communes.

The wines of Haut-Médoc are known for their elegance, complexity, and aging potential, and are made predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc grapes. The terroir of Haut-Médoc is characterized by gravelly soils that provide excellent drainage and reflect the sunlight, producing grapes with intense flavors and aromas.

Whether you're a collector, a connoisseur, or simply a wine lover looking to sample some of the best value vinous delights, Haut-Médoc is the place to be.

  • Caronne Ste Gemme 2020 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (89-91)

The 2020 Caronne Ste Gemme has a well-defined nose of earthy black fruit mixed with bay leaf and tea leaf scents, gaining intensity with aeration. The palate is smooth and harmonious, displaying well-judged acidity and firm grip. There is a bit of new oak that needs to be fully assimilated toward the finish; otherwise this is a very fine Caronne Ste Gemme that will surely represent great value.

  • Château de Camensac 2009 (6x75cl)

    Wine Enthusiast (93)

92-94 Barrel sample. Big, ripe, juicy wine, the tannins very solid and dark. It has layers of new wood, power and considerable density.
  • Château de Camensac 2010 (12x75cl)
    (12x75cl) 2010

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (87)

Bright red-ruby. Medicinal aromas of black cherry, cassis and licorice. Classically dry and cool but with good mid-palate texture and ripeness. The medicinal quality carries through to the persistent finish but the tannins avoid coming off as dry. Very successful for this estate.
  • Château de Camensac 2012 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (86)

Deep ruby/purple with firm tannins and a nice meaty, spiciness, this wine shows slight narrowness and astringency, but it is well-made and certainly above-average. Drink it over the next decade.
  • Château de Camensac 2014 (12x75cl)

    James Suckling (91)

Aromas of plum cake and berries with hints of citrus. Medium body, firm and silky tannins and a savory finish. Drink in 2019.

  • Château de Camensac 2018 (12x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (91)

The 2018 de Camensac has retained its attractive aromatics, needing just a little coaxing to reveal blackberry, bilberry, light marine scents and those iris petals that I remarked upon out of barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with good backbone and well-judged acidity. I admire the substance of this de Camensac, and there is wonderful salinity on the finish. This comes recommended and I can see it aging well.

  • Château de Camensac 2019 (3x150cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)

The 2019 de Camensac is more backward on the nose compared to its peers. Gradually unfurls with broody black fruit, mixed with Earl Grey and freshly rolled tobacco scents, tertiary in nature. Conversely the palate is brighter, equipped with a solid backbone and vibrant black fruit. What I appreciate is the slightly brittle texture towards the classically-styled finish. Huge potential for this superb Haut-Médoc.

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (93)

The 2022 de Camensac is a very serious wine and also a huge overachiever in its peer group. Vertical and explosive in the glass, the 2022 stains the palate with inky dark fruit. Sage, mint, tobacco, incense and licorice are strands in the wine's gorgeous fabric of aromas and flavors. I especially admire the depth, persistence and overall substance here. Superb.

  • Chateau de Lamarque 2015 (6x75cl)
    (6x75cl) 2015

    Jeb Dunnuck (90)

The 2015 Château de Lamarque is a smokin’ good Haut Médoc and well worth checking out. Offering full-bodied richness and a plump, forward, hedonistic style that makes you want to drink a glass, it gives up lots of ripe plum and black cherry fruit as well as more spice, violets, and earth with time in the glass. Drink this sexy 2015 over the coming 5-8 years.
  • Chateau de Lamarque 2016 (6x75cl)

    Wine Spectator (93)

This richly structured wine manages to maintain balance and plenty of black-fruit acidity. Showing a firm texture that will soften, it's a blend of equal parts of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with just a touch of Petit Verdot. The wine needs to age further, so drink from 2022.
