(12x75cl) 1998Chateau Le Moulin 1998 is an exquisitely crafted Saint-Émilion Grand Cru, hailing from the reputable winemaking region of Bordeaux, France. The producer utilises traditional vinification methods, using predominantly hand-harvested Merlot grapes, to deliver a robust and complex wine. Aged in French oak for a year, this vintage presents a rich, deep garnet colour, signifying its maturity. It strikes the senses with a delightful bouquet of dark chocolate and ripe red fruits with subtle hints of spice and oak. The well-integrated tannins impart a long-lasting finish. Chateau Le Moulin 1998 has elegantly evolved over the years, with its richness improved by storied complexity. As expected from a wine of its pedigree, it pairs perfectly with robust, meaty dishes. Appreciation for Chateau Le Moulin 1998 goes beyond mere consumption; every sip is a tribute to the meticulous craftsmanship and time-honoured tradition of its producer.

The 2005 Le Moulin is an attractive, mid-weight, yet full mature Pomerol. Sweet dried cherry, herbs, mint, anise and worn-in leather open nicely. I would prefer to finish any remaining bottles sooner rather than later. Le Moulin is not super complex, but it is delicious and has aged well.HK$5,865.00 -

The 2016 Le Pape is a gorgeous wine to drink now and over the next decade or so. Ripe and luscious in the glass, with terrific depth and character, the 2016 offers tremendous near and medium-term appeal. Black cherry, plum, licorice, leather, spice and smoke add to an impression of darkness in this supple Pessac-Léognan.HK$3,600.00 -

The 2017 Le Pape is soft, refined and super expressive. Dried flowers, mint, cedar, tobacco and mocha add pretty aromatic top notes to this precise, understated Pessac-Léognan. Medium in body and wonderfully nuanced, the 2017 is absolutely gorgeous. Bright floral and red fruit notes add brilliance with a bit of time in the glass. This is such a compelling, understated wine, not to mention an overachiever and a terrific value.HK$1,200.00 -

The 2018 Le Pape is surprisingly gracious in this vintage. Floral notes lift sweet red berry fruit, cedar, licorice and mocha flavors as this stylish, mid-weight Pessac-Léognan shows off its considerable allure. Even with all of the natural richness of the year, Le Pape remains elegant and nuanced. I would cellar the 2018 for at least a few years to allow the tannins to soften. If enjoyed young, a few hours of aeration will do wonders.HK$1,325.00 -
Decanter (94)
Lovely dark red fruits on the nose, a gorgeous sultry florality to it, something a little bit savoury too, pencil led and smoke - extremely welcoming. Great succulence on the palate, juicy and alive, really fresh with the charm of Merlot fully on show. Characterful, structured, mouthwatering and approachable with soft and smooth tannins. Seductive and so enjoyable. From a single 9ha block estate, a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 900m away from Haut Bailly.HK$1,325.00 -

The 2020 Le Pape was picked September 9–15. It is initially tight on the nose and only opens about an hour after opening (I spent the time chatting to Véronique Sanders via Zoom) to offer blackberry and wild hedgerow intermixed with light incense and pressed iris scents, all very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, beautifully balanced and very harmonious. There is a tincture of white pepper sprinkled over the finish that veers toward more red fruit in its final few bars. Excellent.HK$1,205.00 -

Wine Advocate (89-92)
The best Le Prieure I have ever tasted, this 2009 is a hedonist’s dream. Huge red and black fruit aromas soar from the glass of this deep ruby/purple-tinged beauty. With velvety tannin, a full-bodied, opulent personality, and a knock-out finish with no hard edges, it is already impossible to resist, so enjoy it over the next decade or more. (Tasted three times.)HK$2,935.00 -

One of the unquestioned Sleeper jewels of the year, the 2016 Le Prieuré is off the charts beautiful. Silky and impossibly refined, the 2016 is a wine of pure and total precision. Today, the 2016 is a bit more restrained than it was from barrel, when it was a more overt wine. That is not a bad thing, though, as I suspect the 2016 is going to need a number of years to be at its finest. Dark, beautifully perfumed and gracious, Le Prieuré represents the height of finesse in Saint-Émilion. Jean-Claude Berrouet consults for the Artemis Group, which is now the sole owner of Le Prieuré. The 2016 is a fabulous wine by any measure. Don't miss it.HK$4,230.00 -

Brilliant, poised and confident wine, full of limestone finesse and a creamy texture that has delivered on its En Primeur promise. Fleshy blackberry and raspberry, alongside white pepper spice and saffron spice. A yield of 49hl/ha. The estate was sold from Artemis Domaines to the owners of Calon Ségur in early 2020, so the ageing was overseen by new owners Suravenir, with winemaker Penelope Godefroy remaining in place.HK$4,340.00 -

The 2021 Le Prieuré has as well-defined bouquet with lifted, quite floral red berry fruit mixed with subtle loamy scents. The palate is well-defined with finely chiselled tannins, taut and fresh with a sensual finish. Not a powerful Saint-Émilion, yet this continues this estates strong run of form.HK$3,930.00 -

The 2022 Le Prieuré, the first vintage overseen by the Calon-Ségur team, offers a more outgoing and opulent bouquet than its stablemate Vray Croix de Gay, with scents of blackberry, potpourri and light tobacco that barrel maturation has tempered. The palate features fine-boned tannins and a fresh, linear style, eschewing the warmth of the vintage and feeling sapid toward the finish. This classy Saint-Émilion will age well in bottle. This is recommended.HK$760.00 -

2018 is the first year with Cabernet Franc in the mix at Le Thil, and it gives an extra lift to the nose and an extra kick of tension on the finish. On the palate you get the silky, rich roundness of the Merlot, then a muscling in of the tannins towards the finish. There were no stems this time because they felt that there were already plenty of tannins in the skins (since 2014 they have been using a small percentage of whole-bunch fermentation, so this is an interesting departure). 21hl/ha yield.HK$2,545.00 -

Atypical Pessac Léognan with a high degree of Merlot. Even on the nose you see a huge difference with its sibling estate Cantelys. This is riper, black fruits, rounder, touch of liquorice, the form in the mouth is very different, enlarges outwards, less dense. A good sign that the two wines are very different but both excellent.HK$2,365.00 -

The 2014 Les Grands Chênes is plump, juicy and accessible, all of which make it an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years.
