  • Du Tertre 2005 (12x75cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (90)

The 2005 du Tertre is a bold, savory wine, as it so often is. Game, scorched earth, licorice, tobacco and dried herbs give this dark, virile Margaux much of its distinctive personality. The 2005 has aged well. I would prefer to drink it over the next handful of years, before the fruit fully fades, even though there is enough density to allow for aging beyond that. Structurally, du Tertre is a bit lighter than most Margaux in 2005.

  • Duhart-Milon 2005 (17x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (93)

This property, which has benefitted enormously from tremendous investments from the Rothschild family that owns Lafite, has turned out a dense purple-colored wine in 2005. Offering broad, expansive, supple and silky tannin as well as loads of Asian plum sauce, blackcurrants, and sweet cherries, this wine is seductive, medium to full-bodied, and luscious. This successful effort from the Rothschilds should continue to drink well for at least another two decades.

  • Figeac 2005 (12x75cl)

    James Suckling (95)

Interesting aromas of cedar, tobacco, dark fruits, cinnamon, and cigar box. Full and solid, with chewy tannins. A very direct, straight, and pure wine with lovely freshness. This is starting to close, give this some time.

  • Giscours 2005 (12x75cl)

    James Suckling (95)

This is a beautiful Giscours with tension and finesse. It's full-bodied and shows plenty of berry and spice character, not to mention a long, silky-textured finish. It seduces you with each sip. Why wait?

  • Grand Corbin Despagne 2005 (6x75cl)
  • Haut-Bergey 2005 (12x75cl)

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-92)

Deep medium ruby. Blackberry, violet and a hint of dark chocolate on the nose. Impressively dense and primary, with flavors of blackberry and smoked meat complicated by a suggestion of bonfire. Chewy, dry and classic wine, finishing with substantial building tannins.

  • Haut-Brion 2005 (6x75cl)

    Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (100)

The stand out First Growth in my recent retasting of the 2005s, and again here it blew us all away. This was a drought year, with almost no rain from May to October, but never excessively hot, and the balance is evident. The slightly dry tannins that affected many 2005s when young were never such a problem on the warm soils at Haut-Brion, and this is generous, exceptionally nuanced and flavourful, with vivid black cherry and cassis fruits, riven through with liqourice, cocoa bean, pomegranate, sage, cocoa bean and luscious acidities. Jean-Phillip Delmas winemaker, two years into his tenure at the time after taking over from his father Jean-Bernard Delmas in 2003. 100% new oak.

  • Haut-Brion Blanc 2005 (12x75cl)

    Wine Spectator (100)

Vibrant and exciting, with intense aromas of light toasty oak, pineapple skin, lemon, gooseberry, acacia honey and peach tart. Flowers even. Full-bodied, layered and refined, with tropical fruit, honey, vanilla, cream and light toasty oak. The length is amazing. White wine doesn't get better than this. Needs a little time, but hard to leave it alone. Best after 2014. 665 cases made. -JS

  • Haut-Marbuzet 2005 (12x75cl)

    Wine & Spirit Magazine (93)

This has the powerful damson-plum intensity of great cabernet sauvignon grown in the northern Médoc. The tannins are black but not aggressive, their stoniness cushioned by layers of fruit. There's also an umami character, something like woodland mushroom and the savory skin of tiny wild cherries. An elegant wine performing at the top of its terroir, this will be delicious around eight to 12 years from the vintage.

  • L'Evangile 2005 (12x75cl)

    Wine Spectator (100)

Dark in color, almost purple black, with pure tapenade and hints of ripe plum and berry. Full-bodied, with layer upon layer of velvety tannins and chocolate, berry, vanilla and tea flavors. Lasts for minutes. I am blown away by this wine. This has been amazing since the moment I tasted it from barrel. Reminds me of the superb 1950. Best after 2015. 3,500 cases made. -JS

  • L'Extravagant de Doisy-Daene 2005 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

Tasted blind at the 10-Year On Tasting in Sauternes. The 2005 L’Extravagant de Doisy Daëne has 3.9grams of acidity, 192 grams per liter of residual sugar and 12.3% alcohol. The 2005 has a powerful bouquet with honey, mandarin, a touch of petrol and yellow flowers on the nose, later developing that seductive marzipan scent that draws you in like a tractor beam. The palate is unctuous in the mouth that is probably going to be sugar-coated for the next year or two, but there are some gorgeous peach and citrus notes that flourish on the finish. It is more a force of nature than a wine!

  • La Closerie de Camensac 2005 (6x75cl)

Exuding elegance and subtlety, the La Closerie de Camensac 2005 is a sublime choice for discerning connoisseurs. An eye-catching offering from the renowned Haut-Médoc appellation, this Bordeaux malefic magnificently captures the essence of its terroir. Under the expert stewardship of Château de Camensac's vintners, this delightful vintage is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. The choice of grapes imbues it with a complex, multi-layered character that unfolds wonderfully on the palate.

Matured for fifteen months in French oak barrels, the wine has a depth of flavour, integrating rich fruit and subtle spice notes. The producer's attentive viticultural practices ensure this wine is a true expression of its vintage, reflecting the climatic oddities and distinctive characteristics of the 2005 harvest. An embodiment of finesse and balance, La Closerie de Camensac 2005 is a gratifying exploration of Medoc's generous varietals and its microclimate idiosyncrasies.

  • La Tour Figeac 2005 (12x75cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (93)

The 2005 La Tour Figeac is silky, gracious and so expressive. Red-toned fruit, mocha, cinnamon and flowers give the 2005 a good deal of aromatic lift to match its mid-weight personality. The finish narrows just a bit, but this is still a very pleasing, nuanced Saint-Émilion. At this point I would not push my luck too much on aging. The 2005 is a gorgeous wine that shows the more delicate side of Saint-Émilion.

  • Lafite Rothschild 2005 (12x75cl)

    Decanter (100)

This stunning wine is still extremely young, with an amazingly expressive nose with tea leaf hints. The aromatics keep building and building in the glass, and the elegance and persistency shine through. This was a drought year, unusual because it was almost perfect from beginning to end with not a drop of rain from May to October. Temperatures were not hot like 2003, of course, so the ripening was slow and complete, with relatively small yields and relatively high alcohol. This is full of energy and the flavours just keep on going, while those tannis have really started to embrace the fruit and showcase their elegance. It's concentrated and luscious yet focussed and beautifully balanced - the perfect example of how they don't need excess to deliver something truly extraordinary in Bordeaux.

I’ve had many brilliant bottles of the 2005 Château Larcis Ducasse but it’s never shown as spectacularly as on this occasion. It’s a magical, phenomenal Saint-Emilion that couldn’t get any better. Stunningly pure crème de cassis, white truffle, white flowers, cedar pencil, and smoked earth nuances all emerge from this incredibly powerful, opulent wine that has the hallmark minerality, freshness and focus of this great terroir. • Le Bon Pasteur 2005 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (95)

A beautiful wine from Dany and Michel Rolland, this 2005 is surprisingly concentrated and powerful – more so than usual. Deep ruby/purple, with plenty of black cherry and cassis fruit, licorice and a touch of caramel, this wine is still full, youthful, and set for another 15-20 years of longevity. This is a beauty and one of their strongest efforts in the first decade of the 21st century. For a terroir considered well below Pomerol’s superstars, this wine is a major overachiever.

  • Le Clarence de Haut-Brion 2005 (12x75cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (93)

The 2005 Bahans Haut-Brion is the second wine from Haut-Brion, known today as Le Clarence. A huge, virile red, the 2005 exudes intensity from start to finish. Black cherry, plum, smoke, tobacco, gravel and cured meats blast across the palate. The wine’s richness, heft and power are truly remarkable. Today, the 2005 comes across as shockingly young. This heady, exotic Pessac-Léognan has much to offer. It’s price naturally reflects its position as a second wine to a First Growth, yet the 2005 is a serious wine that has a ton to offer.

  • Le Pin 2005 (6x75cl)

    Vintage Tastings (97)

The 2005 Le Pin lived up to the hype and ultimately was wine of the afternoon for me. It had a great nose, t 'n a city yet still refined but also with so much stuffing. There was noticeable citrus with decadent fruit - cranberry, blueberry, blackberry, cassis, boysenberry - everyone was invited! There was great spine and length, but the 2005 was still so elegant. Jef called it 'a lip smacker' and noted 'kirsch and strawberry.' The 2005 was all that and then some.

At last - A year to compare with the legendary 82! This is one of those years with everything turning out perfectly for the modern style of Bordeaux, with spectacular wines across the board. Tannins are remarkably high, however the weather patterns afforded perfect phenolic ripeness, so they have a silky texture and are balanced by fleshy, rich fruit and high-octane acidity.
