Vinous (95)The 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, which comprises of just two barrels this year, has a highly-perfumed and precise bouquet that is actually reminiscent of Christophe Roumier's Bonnes-Mares. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins that frame the multi-layered fruit. Fine grip, structured, saline and aristocratic on the finish. This will need time but will most certainly be worth the wait. |

Vinous (93)The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru has an open nose of brambly red fruit, sous-bois and wilted rose petals, very pure and charming, and not dissimilar in style to François Bertheau's Chambolle 1er Cru. The palate is very harmonious, open and transparent. It feels lighter than others, yet the tension and precision will see this age with style, and perhaps it will not close down. Vinous (91-94)Medium red with ruby highlights. Very fresh, highly aromatic nose combines blackberry, black cherry, violet and crushed rock. Juicy and tightly wound on first taste but essentially creamy in the middle palate, displaying lovely black fruit and floral perfume. Very fine-grained and long, finishing with firm tannins, well-integrated acidity and resounding savory and mineral qualities. Just a tad warm today at 13.5% alcohol but this should turn out very well. |

Vintage Tastings (95)The 1985 Drouhin Musigny was again a better bottle than the last time I had this wine just three months ago. What's up with Drouhin showing better in Hong Kong? Maybe it likes the humidity here. It was the most open of this flight, in '85 fashion, sweet and gamy and full of Pinot fruit. Caramel kisses and damp earth rounded out its nutty nose. Paul agreed this was a better bottle than the one he had recently as well; in fact, I think it was the same bottle we shared in New York, or same batch. This bottle was in a perfect spot and still ascending. |

Vinous (94)The 1989 Musigny Grand Cru is comparatively deep in color with thin bricking on the rim. This has a beguiling nose of darker fruit mixed with autumn leaves, black truffle and morels, becoming more and more floral with time. The medium-bodied palate delivers supple tannins; hints of Lapsang Souchong infuse the red and black fruit, cloves and spice toward the finish. Maybe a little foursquare, yet given my indifference to this Burgundy vintage, it shows extremely well. Tasted at the Drouhin Musigny vertical in London. |

This finished its malolactic fermentation in July (most of these 2013s finished between March and June of last year) and is clearly behind most of the Gevrey wines here in its development. But this saline, classically dry, very long Bonnes-Mares should prove to be an outstanding wine of terroir 10 or 12 years down the road. |

This is firmly structured but has the dimension and amplitude to carry it. |
