Burghound (91-94)
A gentle application of wood sets off the intensely earthy dark currant and slightly gamy aromas. This resembles the Malconsorts in terms of its robust muscularity on the broad-shouldered flavors that possess excellent punch while delivering a touch of animale character on the youthfully austere and persistent finish. This isn't a wine of finesse but it is impressively scaled and clearly built-to-age.HK$1,320.00 -

The 2014 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a very composed bouquet, conservative at first but opening nicely in the glass, here a mixture of red and dark fruit with an undertow of mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. There is still some oak to be absorbed towards the finish, but it is very harmonious, silky smooth with good depth on the finish. This has great potential - a classy Echézeaux.HK$1,730.00 -

The 2014 La Grande Rue Grand Cru has a wonderful bouquet similar to the Grands Echézeaux, though at the moment albeit without the same degree of complexity. Perhaps this is just more backward at the moment. The palate is very well balanced with a keen line of acidity, nicely structured, perhaps just a little more conservative than the Grands Echézeaux, but maybe that means it will offer more once in bottle. One has the sense of a La Grande Rue just biding its time. Hopefully one day I will find out its qualities once in bottle.HK$26,490.00 -

Some evidence of new oak and drive here. Edgy with some nuttiness. Lots of savour and tight build. One of the most youthful 2014s.HK$25,300.00 -

(aged in one-third new oak): Good medium red. Slightly sauvage aromas of red plum, currant, chocolate, mocha and leather. Offers modest depth and flesh but nice cut and peppery energy to its musky red fruit flavors. This distinctly low-fat wine has well-integrated acidity and finishes with good length.HK$845.00 -

This intense white exhibits lemon, apple and honeydew melon flavors over a backbone of crackling acidity. Linear and persistent, this has an extra dimension, resonating on the long aftertaste of spice and mineral. Best from 2020 through 2032.HK$32,380.00 -

The 2014 Bienvenue Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru has a come-hither bouquet that is very immediate: passion fruit, apricot blossom, cold stone and even a faint touch of strawberry winegums. The palate is well balanced with a keen line of acidity, good weight in the mouth with a touch of citrus lemon and lime, but perhaps just needing more complexity and terroir expression to come through on the finish. This is one of the best 2014 Bienvenues that I have come across -- an absolute delight.HK$18,345.00 -

The 2014 Bourgogne Blanc has developed nicely during the remainder of its élevage since I tasted it from stainless steel tank, offering apple blossom, flint and smoky scents that possess much more character. The palate is fresh on the entry with citrus peel and fresh Granny Smith, well judged acidity and a bright and lively finish. This is precisely what you want from a Bourgogne Blanc. Tasted December 2016.HK$6,405.00 -
Decanter (98)
My (SB) wine of the vintage. It has a huge, intense nose of lime, pears and apricot with aromatic tension and complexity. A fine, assertive and extremely youthful attack: concentrated yet racy and very mineral from start to finish. A racehorse of a wine with amazing length and detail, and that classic, stony minerality.HK$51,350.00 -

Bright, pale yellow. Riper and more expressive on the nose than the Folatières, with apricot and peach aromas lifted by minerality. In a distinctly richer, sweeter, more open-knit style than the Folatières in the middle palate, showing a strong spice character and a firm mineral underpinning. Turns considerably tighter on the long back end, finishing saline, vibrant and very dry. This has outstanding potential.HK$33,455.00 -

5*s Pale colour with a discreet lemon and lime nose, but a suggestion of concentration. The citrus theme continues on the palate but it is not too dominant. A very pure and classy wine, the lemon notes continue through to the back of the palate. DIAM 'D'HK$39,080.00 -

The 2014 Puligny Montrachet Village Cru offers lilting dewy green apple and wet limestone aromas on the nose, underneath subtle scents of orange blossom lending more complexity as it opens in the glass. The palate is crisp and fresh with a twist of bitter lemon on the entry. This is well balanced with good weight, plenty of energy on the tip of the tongue with a pleasant saline finish. It does not quite possess the drive of the premier crus, although there is a pleasant spicy note that pops up on the aftertaste. Tasted December 2016.HK$3,415.00 -

The 2014 Clos de Vougeot emerges from three parcels that span the upper, mid-slope and lower parts of this large vineyard. Dense and powerful, but also quite a bit less polished than the other Grand Crus, the Clos de Vougeot is nevertheless endowed with notable personality. A rush of dark red cherry, plum, smoke and savory herbs punctuates this wild, intense, but also deeply expressive Burgundy.HK$151,490.00 -

The 2014 Corton-Charlemagne is massively reduced, as these wines often are at this stage. Orchard fruit, lemon peel, mint and crushed rocks give the wine its tense and overall energy. It's hard to say how much of the reduction will eventually disappear.HK$333,160.00 -
Vinous (93)
The 2014 Pommard Les Vignots is powerful, sinewy and intense, with notable structure and tannin presently enshrouding the fruit. Although the Vignots is often quite approachable - and frankly delicious young - the 2014 is very tightly wound and likely to require at least a few years to come into its own.HK$87,620.00 -

The 2014 Richebourg is paradoxically much more open than the RSV today. Nearly seamless and super-intense in all of its dimensions, the Richebourg hits all the right notes today. Its balance and overall sense of proportion are simply exceptional. This is an especially refined and elegant Richebourg with a bright, bright future. The 2014 Richebourg is the kind of wine that simply takes over all the senses and then never lets up.HK$234,010.00 -

The 2014 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Narbantons is brisk, precise and beautifully sculpted, with plenty of red-toned fruit and floral accents, all of which add to the impression of energy. Still very much tightly wound, the Narbantons needs time in bottle to soften a bit. There is plenty to look forward to, that much is clear. Small red berry, anise and crushed flowers add nuance, the Narbantons is ultimately a wine of energy. And there is plenty of that here.HK$85,140.00
The 2014 vintage in Burgundy has been rung in with a great deal of local optimism and excitement. After three successive vintages of incredibly low yield and quantities, the growers of the Cote de Nuits were ready to welcome an easy vintage and the chance to make a bit more wine. Easy seemed to be the word on everyone's lips as the growing season presented few climatic challenges and viticultural decisions were by and large straightforward.
Tasting the wines from barrel, we quickly learned that the reds were easy to taste, forward and classical, while the whites were truly remarkable. More than one winemaker came forward to declare that 2014 saw the best white wines in a lifetime. Good levels of acidity kept the bundles of ripe fruit lovely, while the overall character of the vintage was in such good balance that the wines will be approachable from a relatively young age, while the best will age very well indeed.
In general the Cote de Nuits fared a bit better than the Cote de Beaune by virtue of having escaped the savage hail which effected the latter. As much as the hail devastated yields, it fortunately did not impact on quality and many producers managed to make some truly exceptional wines with great forward fruit and firm structure.
Overall this is a vintage with a lot to offer and for Burgundy lovers, it is one to celebrate. Each appellaton was true to style and the winemakers had room to impart their own subtle influence on the finish product. Freshness, flavour and verve are the keyword this year and they come together in bundles.
