(bottled in February of 2017; production here was no higher than in 2016 owing to drought in '15): Dark red-ruby. Sweet black cherry and spices on the nose and palate. Lovely juicy, easygoing wine with good depth of texture--and nothing rustic about it. Finishes with serious but smooth tannins and noteworthy length. I like the combination of strong phenolic material and energy. Berthaut told me that she has no idea how the '15s will age, pointing out that her first vintage was 2013.HK$855.00 -
(3x75cl) 2015Vinous (91-93)
(the first vintage for this cuvée, as these vines just reverted back to Gerbet; the family owns one parcel in the bottom middle of the Clos, according to Amélie Berthaut; the vines are more than 50 years old but the estate has done a lot of recent replanting due to frost episodes in recent years; 50% new oak): Bright ruby-red. Pungent aromas of cassis, kirsch, spices, licorice and bitter chocolate (Howell Mountain Cabernet?). Penetrating, sharply delineated black fruit and minty herb flavors are lifted by a note of violet. The slightly peppery tannins build with air, making this wine almost tough in the early going. Leaves the palate vibrating but this Clos Vougeot will need extended aging to blossom in bottle.HK$6,390.00 -

(3x75cl) 2015Vinous (91-94)
(from Les Treux and Les Quartiers de Nuits; 50% vendange entier; 50% new oak): Medium ruby. A bit less unrelievedly black on the nose than most of these 2015s, offering scents of raspberry, flowers, spices and musky smoky oak. Suave, sweet and fine-grained; a very supple, unforced grand cru with considerable chocolatey ripeness. Still a bit reduced but this wine already makes the Clos Vougeot look a bit muscular and foursquare by comparison. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and suave, lingering fruit.HK$9,515.00 -

(made in two barrels and the rest stainless steel): Bright light-medium yellow. Peach and spice aromas are complicated by saline sea spray and iodine. Thick but not at all heavy; a step up from the other 2015s here in urgent fruit and savory minerality. This seamless wine boasts real energy and bulletproof material. The spicy, saline, rising finish saturates the palate. The yield here was just 21 hectoliters per hectare, according to Bailly. This wine was quite dry and strict last year but has turned out well, even if it will require patience.HK$29,055.00 -

Suave, silky and expressive, the 2015 Corton Grand Cru is a standout. Silky tannins wrap around a core of ripe red cherry/plum fruit, with pretty floral, hard candy, and spice overtones that develop with a bit of time in the glass. Naturally, the 2015 is very, very young. But it is a gorgeous Burgundy that will repay cellaring handsomely.HK$6,795.00 -

Light straw-yellow. Deep, soil-inflected aromas and flavors of white stone fruits, clove, hazelnut, marzipan, white pepper, smoke and minerals, with a note of orange bitters emerging after extended aeration. Wonderfully rich, silky and mouthfilling but not at all heavy, showing considerable baby fat for young Corton-Charlemagne but with a powerful stony underpinning. Seriously rich, ageworthy wine with a touch of dusty tannins and palate-saturating breadth and salty length. This wine is seriously satisfying right now but should undergo dramatic transformation over the years as it burns off some of its baby fat, which it started to do with 72 hours in the recorked bottle. A star of the vintage, showing no sign of heat or blurriness and communicating a very strong if fully ripe impression of terroir.HK$22,090.00 -

(bottled in February of 2017): Deep red-ruby. Very ripe aromas of kirsch, leather, coffee and chocolate; as at so many other addresses, this first sample tasted after Bouchard's range of 2016s struck me as somewhat roasted in its fruit character. Very rich yet sappy, showing the solidity of a very warm year; quite large-scaled (14% alcohol!) for this cuvée, offering highly concentrated flavors of red berries, dark cherry and chocolate. A rather extreme style yet nicely aromatic in the middle palate (Bouchard tries to keep this wine open for restaurants, noted Weber). Finishes with soft tannins and very good length.HK$3,970.00 -

Healthy dark red. Brooding aromas of tart cherry stomp and red licorice; there's something cool and medicinal here that belies the sunny vintage. Wonderfully silky and savory on entry, then densely packed and almost painfully concentrated in the middle, showing a bulletproof quality to its flavors of red berries, minerals and rose petal. The explosive, slowly building finish saturates the palate with salty minerality. Still a total baby, this wine will need to be forgotten in the cellar for a decade. (Weber noted that this wine hasn't moved since the day he bottled it in early March.)HK$19,230.00 -

(30% vendange entier): Good dark red with ruby tones. Sexy nose combines black raspberry, smoky minerality, coffee and a whiff of animal fur; smells sweet! Then very ripe and fat in the mouth, with plush, almost syrupy red fruit flavors energized by a note of cherry pit. Still, this wine doesn't offer quite the clarity or lift of the Bouchard vinification. Finishes with serious but ripe tannins. I find this a bit extreme for the year.HK$21,705.00 -

The 2015 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has another very pure, elegant bouquet, firmly in red rather than black fruit territory and quite lush and sensual - one of the most seductive you will find this year. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin and perfectly pitched acidity; it feels supple at first, though the second half has a more chalky texture and the red fruit merges with more black fruit. Gaining structure toward the oaky finish, it exerts firm grip and sports stupendous length. Wonderful. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.HK$17,255.00 -

Healthy medium red. Distinctly darker on the nose than the Clos Saint-Jacques, offering aromas of black cherry, licorice, spices and crushed rock if not quite the floral high notes of the 2016 version. At once thick and vibrant in the mouth, conveying good mineral verve to its intense flavors of dark berries and underbrush. The slowly mounting, fine-grained finish displays a subtle suggestion of candied fruits but excellent energy and grip. This beauty seems less dominated by its vintage character than the Clos Saint-Jacques.HK$19,085.00 -

The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru has a gleaming bouquet with transparent red cherry and white-tipped strawberries that contain such brightness and vivacity. There's wonderful mineralité both aromatically and on the palate, where one finds filigree tannins. Irresistibly pure and elegant. Arthur Clair told me that when he made this wine at the beginning of his career, his father, Bruno, quipped that he had made a Rosé, due to its pallid hue. Well, just goes to show!HK$10,135.00 -

The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle demanded patience for the nose to develop. It eventual does open up and offer attractive crushed strawberry, raspberry preserve and cold stone aromas, just a hint of incense developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, slightly meaty in style with a well-defined finish that needs more time to fully absorb the oak. Good depth and substance here, it will benefit from 3-4 years in bottle.HK$6,490.00 -

The 2015 Marsannay Les Longeroies offers enticing aromas of redcurrant juice, cranberry and cold stone on the nose that is well defined and complex. The palate is very well balanced with crisp acidity, well-integrated oak, fine depth towards the sorbet-fresh finish. Hints of orange sorbet linger on the aftertaste, completing a quite delicious Marsannay, the best produced by Bruno this year.HK$3,175.00
We found the wines in 2015 very easy and forward to taste, with as much focus on freshness as concentration, so there wasn’t a complete break from the 2014s in that sense. The hope is that as the wines mature they will continue to show the balance and classicism they displayed from the barrel. Our expectation is that they will do so and the best wines will live for a very long time with a genuinely satisfying pattern of maturation throughout their life.
