Samuel Billaud Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu 2022 exemplifies the refined elegance of Burgundy’s esteemed Chablis region. Cultivated in the prestigious Mont de Milieu vineyard, the Chardonnay grapes are meticulously hand-harvested from Kimmeridgian limestone soils, bestowing the wine with exceptional minerality and vibrant acidity. Under Samuel Billaud’s expert stewardship, the winemaking process embraces traditional techniques, including cold fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve the grape’s pure fruit expression and subtle complexity. The 2022 vintage presents a luminous pale gold hue, unveiling aromas of green apple, citrus blossom, and a hint of flint. On the palate, it delivers a harmonious balance of freshness and depth, with a crisp, lingering finish that underscores its Premier Cru status. Perfectly suited to accompany seafood, poultry, or fine cheeses, this wine is a testament to Samuel Billaud’s dedication to quality and the distinctive character of Chablis terroir. |

Vinous (94+)Cool, inward and impeccably layered from start to finish, the 2010 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre impresses for its fabulous sense of balance and poise. Slate, crushed rocks, lime and white flowers are woven together in a fabric of unusual class and elegance. All the elements fuse together impeccably here. This is a gorgeous Chablis, but it will require patience. Today the 2010 is quite reticent, but the pedigree is evident. |

Vinous (92)The 2016 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre, which underwent 15 months in barrel, has a lovely dried honey and beeswax scented bouquet that gains intensity with aeration. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, fresh and vibrant with a tangy, saliva-inducing saline finish that feels very persistent. Excellent. |

Vinous (95)One of the highlights in this range, the 2017 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru captures all of the energy and tension that makes wines from this site so distinctive. White flowers, mint, crushed rocks, slate and citrus all pulse through the 2017. The style is all about classical austerity, translucence and crystalline purity. |

Vinous (93)The 2018 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru comes from a hectare of 45-year-old vines and was vinified in stainless steel vats and 450-liter barrels before aging for 18 months on the lees. It has a pretty nose of orange blossom, white peach and Japanese yuzu scents that are beautifully defined. The palate is very well balanced, with Granny Smith apples and pear on the entry, a vibrant thread of acidity, and quite a linear, taut finish that is perhaps more 2017 in style. Overall, this is a superb Montée de Tonnerre for those who like "classic" Chablis. |

Burghound (91-94)Moderate but not invasive oak frames the elegant, airy and quite pretty aromas of white flowers, various citrus and oyster shell wisps. There is excellent intensity to the overtly mineral-driven middle weight flavors that flash very good cut on the sneaky long, lemony and solidly dry and firm finale. This lovely effort is a relatively classic MdT and should age accordingly. 2027+ |

Burghound (92-94)(from a 2.5 ha parcel of 35+ year old vines – two thirds of the blend is from Chapelot and the remainder is from Pied d’Aloup and Montée de Tonnerre proper; the Pied d’Aloup vines were planted in 1935). This would be difficult to mistake for anything other than Chablis with its aromatic profile of oyster shell, iodine, citrus and acacia blossom, all trimmed in a delicate dollop of oak. The super-sleek, intense and stylish middle weight flavors are also quite classy and I very much like the balance. This is also notably firmer and very much built-to age. Excellent. (92-94)/2030+ |

Vinous (94)The 2021 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru retains its serious and backward nose, very saline and still with that faint tang of kelp/Japanese nori. The palate is beautifully balanced with a keen thread of acidity, notes of orange rind and a more malic finish than I recall, yet with the same wondrous elegance and poise. This will age wonderfully in bottle and require time for the aromatics to awaken. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2022 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru comes from two parcels (one in Haut Chapelot near Raveneau and the other in Montée de Tonnerre lieu-dit). The strict nose has crushed stone scents, hints of damp moss and sea cave. Very fine delineation. The palate has a penetrating entry with another killer line of acidity. It is tensile and steely with serious weight towards the grippy finish. Very sustained, this is a brilliant Montée de Tonnerre. |

Wine Advocate (93+)The recently bottled 2023 Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre is another success for Samuel Billaud, unfurling aromas of nashi pear, iodine, gooseberry and grapefruit. Full-bodied, ample and satiny, it offers a layered mid-palate framed by tangy acids and concludes with a long, saline finish. |

Wine Advocate (92)Aromas of green apple, white flowers, oyster shell and beeswax introduce the 2019 Chablis 1er Cru Montmains, a medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive wine that's quite tightly wound, built around tangy acids and chalky dry extract. This Montmains retains a very classic profile in this ripe vintage. |

Decanter (93)Appealing already, warm and with a sunny disposition on the palate, there is plenty of driving acidity to balance. Billaud explains that the white clay gives more power. Plenty of tension here. Will age. Not at all overripe. A fine example of Montmains with the vines averaging 35 years old. No barrels. |

Burghound (90-93)(Billaud noted that of all his vineyards, Montmains was the hardest hit by the frost). A markedly floral-suffused nose proffers additional notes of pear and enough classic Chablis character to be persuasive. The medium-bodied flavors possess a gorgeous texture that is a mix of punch and refinement while delivering fine length on the equally stony finale. This too is understated and harmonious. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2021 Chablis Les Séchets 1er Cru has another very backward nose and raised only in stainless steel for 18 months, this is another "serious", perhaps "mean" nose that is designed for the most purist Chablis-lovers. The palate is very well balanced with a killer line of acidity, taut and fresh with a lip-smacking saline finish that begs another sip. Only to be drunk with a large plate of fresh oysters! |
