    Decanter (93)

This impressive white wine from red wine specialist Charles van Canneyt at Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat dispels the myth that one can’t do both. The aromas begin with a hint of lemon peel and white flowers and then opens up to encompass quince, hazelnut, and spice. The beautiful freshness of the year balances out the impressive concentration of the wine to lead to a surprisingly long finish. 2021 is van Canneyt’s fifth vintage of this wine, whose vines were previously worked by Domaine Coche-Dury.

The 2020 Meursault Clos de Mazeray Blanc has a nicely detailed bouquet with jasmine and white flower scents complementing the citrus fruit. I find this more complex than the Beaune Blancs. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, hints of tangerine and spice with quite a persistent finish. Enjoy this over the next decade. Closure: Diam
  • Jacques Prieur Meursault-Perrieres 1er Cru 1999 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (91-93)

(this wine finished its sugar fermentation in December of 2000, with three grams remaining). Cool aromas of liquid stone, hazelnut and spice. Very intense, austere and powerful, with the lovely touch of sweetness balanced by gripping acids. Has the sugar/acid balance and depth of flavor of a great dry riesling from Alsace. Sappy, racy and almost painful today. Finishes with an exhilarating hint of crystallized fruits. A wine of considerable potential, but in need of at least five or six years of bottle aging.

This is much more precise than the ‘19 tasted last year. The palate is taut and crisp on the entry, a twist of sour lemon lending tension and counterbalancing the richness on the finish. • Jean-Michel Gaunoux Meursault 1er Cru Perrieres Blanc 2023 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (94-96)

The 2023 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru showed a little reduction on the nose, though there is unequivocally more mineralité than the Les Charmes. The palate is taut, fresh and quite linear, but as it moves through to the second half the quality shines through with perfectly pitched acidity and life-affirming mineralité. This cuvée was tasted twice on two different visits and my assessment is based on the second, which was far superior.

(from a 1965 planting; picked near the end, on September 8; aging in 10% new oak): Bright medium yellow. Yellow peach, mirabelle and spices on the nose, with complicating notes of hazelnut and mint. Quite rich in the mouth, showing some spicy oak; the closest to exotic of these 2017s to this point and without quite the tension or energy of the preceding samples. Not a mineral style. Finishes slightly bitter-edged in a youthful way. Assistant Hervey noted that this wine, from a deep clay site, may be our most aromatic Meursault.
