(6x75cl) 2015Vinous - Antonio Galloni (97)
The 2015 Montrachet Grand Cru is, once again, stunning. I have had the good fortune of tasting the 2015 multiple times. It has never been anything less than stellar. Bright and focused, with tons of energy, the 2015 exudes class. At ten years of age, it is also very young, not to mention exceptionally polished in every way.HK$504,830.00 -

The 2020 Montrachet Grand Cru is brilliant, uniting all the breadth and plenitude of which this vineyard is capable with all the work that's been quietly going on at the domaine to bring greater precision and integration to the white wines. Exhibiting extravagant aromas of honeyed orchard fruits, confit peach and green mango mingled with hints of nutmeg, freshly baked bread and buttery pastry, it's full-bodied, satiny and broad shouldered, remaining vibrant and dynamic despite all its heft and weight, and revealing its chassis of chalky structuring extract as it opens in the glass. It concludes with a long, resonant finish.HK$92,100.00 -

Vinous (95+)
(13.8% natural alcohol): Bright light yellow. Very sexy nose combines iodine, smoke, hazelnut and menthol. Like liquid silk in the mouth; thick but energetic, with flavors of peach, stone, truffle and menthol supported by a strong structural underpinning. The smooth, slow-building finish shows a very fresh mentholated character and a powerful impression of solidity. Deceptively open today owing to its early sweetness, and not at all austere for the cru, but I'd let this one sleep in the cellar for at least five or six years.HK$50,410.00 -
(1x150cl) 2014Vinous (94+)
(one of the three barrels was new): Bright, pale straw-yellow. Rich, nuanced aromas of yellow peach, apricot, white pepper, iodine, clove and smoky oak. Wonderfully rich, deep and sweet, displaying strong extract and a powerful, chewy, rising finish. Finishes peppery, broad, saline and rich, with a tannic impression and excellent length. This wine is vinified at Baron Thénard, the source of these grapes, with barrels provided by Sauzet, then moved back to Sauzet's cellar in mid-winter. This slightly peppery, saline Montrachet does not have the distinction of the Chevalier-Montrachet but boasts terrific power and solidity.HK$25,570.00 -
(3x75cl) 2015Vinous (94)
Bright, light yellow. Discreet nose offers scents of flowers and iodiney minerality; not at all exotic for Montrachet from a warm, sunny year. Then superripe and rich on the palate, conveying an almost oily concentration to its flavors of ripe apricot and mandarin orange enlivened by brisk citrus notes. With two grams per liter residual sugar, this wonderfully smooth, seamless wine comes across as deceptively easygoing. There's nothing austere about this beauty, which finishes with slowly mounting length.HK$32,665.00 -
Burghound (94)
This is sufficiently reduced that the nose is tough to properly assess. The broader-shouldered flavors possess an almost painful intensity with plenty of muscle and mouth coating sap that manages to adequately buffer the slightly warm and youthfully awkward finish. I suspect that this will ultimately come together with 5-ish or so years of bottle age but it's not clear that it will ultimately surpass either the Bâtard or the Chevalier.HK$11,205.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-98)
4 barrels. They supply their own barrels. Not racked yet. A tiny bit more colour, a little touch of coconut from the wood. Excellent density on the palate, seamless, thoroughly Montrachet worthy. Lingers deliciously on the palate, picked at a very good ripeness and with an excellent balance between depth and elegance.HK$9,415.00 -
Burghound (95-98)
Don't Miss! This is also aromatically restrained and requires considerable swirling to coax the aromas of layered and cool spicy essence of pear, apple, white peach and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume and mid-palate density to the borderline massive flavors that also possess a highly seductive texture while displaying stunningly good length on the balanced and mouth coating finish. As is often the case with this wine, it will need time to develop better depth, but the track record is so good that it is all but guaranteed to do so.HK$11,290.00 -

Mid lemon yellow. This has the weight which should have. The nose does indeed speak of Montrachet with a measured opulence. The weight on the palate transcends those which have gone before, there is a grip from the barrel and a little toast (a new Chassin barrel and one year old François Frères). Very long and relatively fine finish. Extremely good. Tasted: October 2021HK$13,475.00 -

Don't Miss! A wonderfully spicy nose combines notes of exotic tea and wood with a plethora of floral elements and white peach scents. There is even better volume as well as size, weight and density to the muscular and super-compact big-bodied flavors that display huge length on the borderline tannic finish. While most competent examples of Montrachet clearly need extended cellaring but this is very definitely a 'buy and forget you own it' wine that should be stunningly good in time.HK$11,795.00 -

A pure clear lemon colour. The extra weight of Montrachet is indeed apparent on the nose. Ripe pears. Perhaps this is a little less in the Sauzet style, not being from their own fruit, but it is impressive. The weight on the palate is profound, with certainly ripe fruit but also a point of minerality right in the middle, and good acidity. Almost a wine to eat rather than drink. It does indeed have the requisite very long finish. Drink from 2032-2045. Tasted: October 2023.HK$9,415.00 -

(3x75cl) 2023Vinous - Neal Martin (96-98)
The 2023 Montrachet Grand Cru showed a little more cloudiness in the glass due to the lees (of course, they will disappear once racked). Perhaps the nose is a little primal as a result—it's not as complete as the Bâtard or the Bienvenues. The palate is more indicative of where this Monty will be heading. It has intense, immense weight with an almost pixelated mineral-driven finish. This is going to be a great Montrachet, but it might take longer to reveal its true identity. Only six barrels were produced this year.HK$28,775.00 -
Vinous (89-91)
Subtle aromas of white peach, apple, spices and leesy hazelnut. Silkier and more elegant than the Hameau de Blagny, offering a lighter touch and more nervosité. A floral element adds lift. Finishes smooth and long, with subtle fruit intensity and very good cut.HK$9,235.00 -

Vinous (92)
Pale yellow. Very reticent aromas of white peach and ripe citrus fruits. Rich, pliant, rather generous wine with lovely inner-mouth floral lift giving it an enticing coolness. A touch of positive greenness contributes to this wine's refreshment value. At once silky and energetic, this very pure Referts finishes with subtle rising length.HK$5,710.00 -
(3x75cl) 2018The Fleurot-Larose Montrachet 2018 exemplifies the pinnacle of Burgundy's viticultural excellence. Crafted in the esteemed Montrachet Grand Cru vineyard, situated in the Côte de Beaune, this Chardonnay undergoes meticulous hand harvesting to ensure pristine grape selection. Under the stewardship of the Fleurot-Larose family, renowned for their dedication to traditional winemaking techniques, the juice undergoes gentle fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, preserving the wine's natural purity and vibrant acidity. Subsequent ageing takes place in oak barrels, imparting subtle complexity and enhancing the minerality. The 2018 vintage exhibits a harmonious balance of elegance and depth, showcasing aromas of white citrus, delicate floral notes, and a hint of toasted almond. On the palate, it unfurls with a refined texture, persistent finish, and the quintessential finesse that characterises a premier Montrachet. A sublime choice for connoisseurs seeking an exceptional expression of Burgundy’s finest offerings.

The 2012 Montrachet Grand Cru demonstrates a discrete reduction on the nose that begins to lift with aeration. (For a minute or two I wondered whether there is a bit of TCA). The palate is fresh and sappy with an electrifying line of acidity. You can feel the tension from start to finish and yet it is only beginning to open the first few pages of its story. Superb. Tasted blind at the New World/Old World Chardonnay tasting in London.HK$6,170.00 -

Aromas of clear honey, blanched almonds and pear mingle with hints of citrus blossom and orange oil, introducing the 2018 Montrachet Grand Cru, a full-bodied, elegantly textural wine that's supple and enveloping, with lovely depth and dimension at the core, underpinned by lively acids. Long and perfumed, this is an elegant, expressive Montrachet from Fontaine-Gagnard.HK$37,580.00 -

The 2019 Montrachet Grand Cru, of which there is one and a half barrels this year (actually the maximum that the domaine produces), has an intense oyster shell and flinty bouquet, touches of hazelnut and white peach developing with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a very slight reduction on the entry, lively and very concentrated with orange rind and quince towards the finish. The new oak from the half barrel is conspicuous at the moment but that will be integrated with time in bottle.HK$26,755.00 -

The 2020 Montrachet Grand Cru has an intense nose, quite powerful, maybe the oak a little too present at the moment. The palate is powerful too, touches of tropical fruit infusing the citrus fruit, lightly spiced with a slightly heavy finish. Very fine, but it will require time to absorb the new oak.HK$8,560.00 -

There is just one barrel of 2021 Montrachet Grand Cru this year (normally there is one and a half). It has an intense bouquet, though it doesn't quite have the panache of the Bâtard-Montrachet, a hint of menthol emerging with time. The palate is well balanced with a dab of stem ginger on the entry, fine depth, powerful and concentrated with an intense finish.HK$8,560.00 -
Vinous (95-97)
The 2022 Montrachet Grand Cru is the only cuvée in two one-year-old barrels. I don't think it needs new oak. There is real energy and complexity here, orange pith and lemon verbena, touches of lemon curd. The palate is beautifully balanced with great depth and power, far more than the Bâtard-Montrachet. It has a beguiling length and precision, velvety smooth, with a hint of walnut on the finish. Divine.HK$8,560.00 -

The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes unwinds in the glass with aromas of pastry cream, crisp orchard fruit, honeycomb and white flowers. On the palate, it's full-bodied, broad shouldered and powerful, with a dense, blocky profile that is classic Combettes. When I tasted it, the wine was quite reserved and less advanced in its élevage than most of Carillon's other cuvées, but its potential is clearly considerable.HK$17,630.00 -
