Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

The 2014 Puligny Montrachet Village Cru offers lilting dewy green apple and wet limestone aromas on the nose, underneath subtle scents of orange blossom lending more complexity as it opens in the glass. The palate is crisp and fresh with a twist of bitter lemon on the entry. This is well balanced with good weight, plenty of energy on the tip of the tongue with a pleasant saline finish. It does not quite possess the drive of the premier crus, although there is a pleasant spicy note that pops up on the aftertaste. Tasted December 2016.HK$15,720.00 -

Fairly light nose. Éric Remy says it is closing up. Again, very notable acidity. I would hold this quite a while. Certainly no hint of fat here. Quite uncompromising at the moment. Where’s the flesh? Lots of chalky chew on the end.HK$16,765.00 -

The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Village has a taut, crisp bouquet with scents of wet limestone, sea spray and green apple. There is fine delineation here, and more intensity than I was anticipating for a Village Cru. The palate is well balanced with subtle passion fruit and citrus notes on the entry, good weight in the mouth and fine acidity, though not as complex on the finish as other Village Crus I have tasted from Leflaive. Therefore I suspect this will be ideal for early drinking.HK$14,415.00 -

5-Star Wine Just bottled at the end of April. Made from the usual six plots. A pale lemon yellow. The nose has been knocked back a bit and is not yet showing much fruit. Then a little white fruit starts to emerge with some graphite, and a little bit of gunflint. Racy yet ripe with several layers of flavour and excellent length, the acidity perfectly wound in. On the assumption that the bouquet comes back as it should a little later on, after getting over the bottling, this will surely be a 5 star wineHK$4,395.00 -

(1x75cl) 2021Burghound (90-93)
(Outstanding) An elegant, pure and more floral nose offers up its combination of green apple, prominent citrus and crushed fennel nuances. There is borderline painful intensity to the appealingly textured medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality, chiseled, balanced and long finish that is quite dry but not really austere. This is an excellent Puligny villages that is also worth strong consideration.HK$2,575.00 -
Burghound (90-92)
Outstanding. A markedly more floral-suffused nose features notes of cool Granny Smith apple, citrus and a touch of mineral reduction. The caressing, delicious and plump but agreeably energetic medium-bodied flavors possess solid depth and persistence on the balanced, firm and highly refreshing finale. This is also excellent for its level and a wine that should drink well after only 3 to 4 years of keeping but age gracefully for a decade. Recommended.HK$5,300.00 -

Dark red. Three-dimensional aromas of dark fruits, minerals, roast coffee and musky underbrush. An extremely urgent grand cru with incredible texture and energy. Dense and almost painfully intense but utterly light on its feet for a wine of such sheer magnitude. Deeply spicy, complex and complete. Finishes with huge, broad tannins and great building persistence. A knockout, and a strong candidate for wine of the vintage.HK$192,520.00 -

Deeper color. Sappy, spicy, liqueur-like aromas of framboise and creme de cassis Sweeter, lusher and more textured than the Fremieres; also a bit reduced. Very subtle, spicy and complex. At once dense and delineated. Fruit-driven Chambolle, not as obviously mineral as the '95, but very long and fine.HK$38,845.00 -
(6x75cl) 1999Vinous (93)
The 1999 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru just has the edge over the 2001 when compared side-by-side. That said, I have a slight preference towards the aromatics of the 2001, this offering lovely red fruit laced with a light marine influence and espresso. The palate is where the action is: beautifully balanced and more powerful than the 2001, very precise and satin-like in texture. Unlike the 2001 this appears to improve with aeration, gaining more and more depth and fanning out with a sense of confidence towards the sappy finish. It just exudes the essence of Chambolle-Musigny with a lingering aftertaste. 538 bottles produced. Tasted at Carré des Feuillants restaurant in Paris.HK$373,305.00 -

Wine Advocate (91)
The 2011 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes races out of the blocks on the nose, misbehaving like Lalou’s two dogs that are yapping around my ankles. Then it clams down with aeration, achieving more delineation and focus but still constituting one of the more exotic bouquets in this line-up. The palate is sweet in the mouth, corpulent and rounded, you could say almost nubile. Lavish, plush and caressing, this voluptuous Chambolle is one for those who prefer a more hedonistic style of Pinot?and why not.HK$161,405.00 -
(1x75cl) 1996Vinous (89-92)
Excellent deep red. Black raspberry, minerals and smoky oak on the nose: the dark side of Chambolle, particularly in comparison to the redder-fruit '95. Minerally and firm, with excellent density for a village wine but limited complexity. Finishes firm, ripe and persistent.HK$42,075.00 -
(1x75cl) 2009Vinous (94)
The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fremieres is rich, seductive and incredibly primary, with little in the way of aromatic expressiveness. This is the first wine of these 2009s that is closed in on itself. With time in the glass hints of red cherries and flowers begin to emerge, yet this remains an implosive wine in need of considerable cellaring. The depth of the fruit and the elegance of the tannins are impossible to miss, but this multi-dimensional wine begs for patience.HK$62,005.00 -

Red-ruby. Forceful aromas of briary dark berries, plum, smoke, coffee and earth, with the subtle vegetal/herbal complexity that is the essence of this grand cru. Tight and bright, but a wine of great intensity and richness, with compelling chewy depths. Less tasteable today than the Combottes but this has more dimension and class. Finishes extremely subtle and long. This will require patience.HK$78,695.00
