The 2014 Barolo Monprivato is as engaging and as individual as I had hoped it would be. Still in its youth, the bouquet reaches out with wild berry and strawberry, and it has started to show unique tones of natural rubber, tropical fruit and peach—not at all what you might expect from a Nebbiolo, but very delicate and elegant nonetheless. Mascarello's 1988 Monprivato is another gem. It is a classic Monprivato, with a clear red color, and perfumed. ethereal aromas that soar out of the glass. Showing plenty of vibrancy and freshness as well as clean, focused flavors in its suggestions of roses, anise, strawberries and raspberries, it epitomizes elegance and finesse. Although it is perhaps not the most complex or age-worthy Monprivato it nevertheless is a beautiful wine to drink now and over the next 10-12 years. In 1987 I purchased a plot in the Monprivato vineyard from Violante Sobrero. The vines didn't respond immediately to my pruning and for two years continued to produce the higher yields to which they had been previosuly accustomed. For that reason I have never been fully satisfied with my 1988, adds Mascarello.HK$3,260.00 -

Showing bold ripeness with strawberry and sweet raspberry aromas, the Giuseppe Mascarello 2020 Barolo Villero is more reflective of the hot vintage than the other wines in this flight. The bouquet shows hints of white raisin and dried plum. But you also get the salty, mineral notes that distinguish Castiglione Falletto. In fact, they are central to the personality of this accessible wine. Villero ferments in cement and remains in contact with the skin for 16 to 18 days, or even up to 21 days in certain vintages. Oak aging was reduced by a few months in 2020, and the wine was put in bottle earlier than usual. I recommend a near or medium-term drinking window.HK$5,965.00 -

The 2012 Barolo Perno revealed an open and fleshy personality when I sampled it. This points to the warmth of the 2012 vintage. With fruit harvested closer to the winery in Monforte d'Alba, this Barolo initially shows a dry personality with pressed tones of wild berry and red rose petal. It also reveals a fluid or flexible side, which means the wine takes on more volume quite rapidly once poured from the bottle. The finish shows tannin firmness and solid structure with cola, licorice and dried herb on the long finish.HK$1,300.00 -

It is a gorgeous wine with great balance, a long finish, and its fruit holding throughout. Ripe, fresh, and not showing any signs of maturity, this is a fantastic and racy wine that delivers a lot of pleasure. The 2013 Barbaresco Rabajà Riserva is a dense, brooding wine endowed with serious depth and intensity, Graphite, smoke, cured meats, spice, leather and licorice give the Riserva its decidedly sombre, virile personality. Readers should be prepared to cellar the 2013 for at least a few years. Today, the 2013 is in an awkward stage where it is mot young, but it is also not mature, and in periods like this, patience is key, as there is not much pleasure to be had. The 2013 won't be released until at least Spring 2020, so there is plenty of time.HK$5,395.00
