Bruno Giacosa, like Bartolo Mascarello, often told me he preferred 1986 to 1985. Of course, 1985 is the vintage that got all the press, while 1986 is remembered for a devastating hailstorm in May that decimated production. Very little wine was made that year, but what was bottled turned out to be quite good, and in some cases, better than that. Sadly, this is not a great bottle of Bruno Giacosa's 1986 Barolo Riserva. The overall impression is of a delicate, lifted, fully mature Barolo. Only the memory of better bottles helps put this one into context, because taken on its own, this is still a very fine bottle of Barolo.

James Suckling (99)

This is an incredible wine that reminds me of the perfect 2000 Barolo Rocche de Falletto. Flowers, spices, leather and animals. Decadent. Dried mushrooms. Then changes to Japanese ginger and lemon peel. Full-bodied but refined and so long. It has layers of fruit and power. So refined. Ripe and intense. Perfect balance and harmony. It will be released in 2016.

Falesco's top offering is a 100% barrique-aged Merlot, the 2000 Montiano. While it may not equal the quality of the 1999 or 1997, it comes close. The 2000 boasts an opaque purple color in addition to a sumptuous perfume of graphite, blackberries, currants, licorice, and subtle pain grille notes. With great depth, full body, sweet tannin, and a long, layered, elegant finish, it should drink well between 2005-2020. Bravo!

The 2018 Lo Scudiere shows some evolution and pours a deeper brick red hue compared to the younger vintages. Balsamic notes come forward, along with aromas of sage, sappy earth, licorice, and baked cherry. Medium-bodied, it has more freshness on the palate than the nose suggests, with a saline edge, refreshing acidity, and well-defined tannins, followed by a lightly gravelly texture on the finish. It’s drinking well now and should be enjoyed over the near term. Drink 2026-2030.

The Fabio Motta 2021 Bolgheri Superiore Le Gonnare is a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon that starts off in cement vats and ages in smaller oak barrels. Fruit comes from a 1.9-hectare site with rocky clay soils at 150 meters in elevation. This wine holds back initially, and that elegant restraint is something you'll find in the classical expressions from this coastal wine appellation. Dark fruit cedes to savory tobacco and pencil shavings. The results are nicely balanced.

The 2019 Le Gonnare pours a lighter red with a pale garnet hue and immediately stands out for its elegance. A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Syrah, it shows bright red fruit, red apple, fresh flowers, and brushy herbs, with a more lifted and refined aromatic profile. Medium to full-bodied, it has a linear, focused structure, with well-defined, even tannins and refreshing acidity that carries through a long, precise finish. This is one of the freshest and most compelling vintages in the range, and easily my favorite of the wines tasted here. It’s all about balance and clarity, with excellent definition throughout. Drink 2026-2046.

Fabio Motta is one of the best performers in Bolgheri among the small producers of the next generation. Almost ready with his new winery, it represents a kind of garagiste in the appellation. He ferments all the wines with natural yeast and manages careful extraction and maceration. His original blend for Le Gonnare sees an addition of Syrah to complete the 85% of Merlot and is aged in 1/3 new French oak barriques. Intense and perfumed it shows kiwi peel and cedar wood aromas, loaded with restrained cassis and bitter orange flavour. The attack is dense and ripe with elegant texture and chewy tension on the finish.

Germano's 2013 Barolo Prapò is an ample, broad-shouldered Barolo with plenty of Serralunga power and grip. Sweet red cherry, plum, menthol and licorice flesh out in the glass. Even with all of its obvious intensity, the 2013 has a good bit of aromatic lift that adds brightness. The 2013 spent around 45 days on the skins and was aged in medium-sized casks. It should be approachable with just a few years in bottle.
