  • Roagna Barbaresco Gallina 2019 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (95)

Of the three single-vineyard Barbarescos produced by Luca Roagna, Gallina tends to be finest and the most delicate. This parcel was leased up until one year ago when Luca was finally able to buy it. It measures one hectare and is characterized by sandy soils. These conditions give rise to floral perfumes with sweet, soapy aromas of lavender and lilac. The 2019 Barbaresco Gallina is underpinned by a long sense of silkiness and finesse. The tannins are sweet, and the wine shows ample energy before closing with polished intensity.

  • Roagna Barbaresco Montefico Vv 2007 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

All the best elements of the house style come together in the 2007 Barbaresco Montefico Vecchie Vigne, a wine that is at once open because of the year yet also structured. Mint, freshly cut flowers and red berries all come to life in this precise, chiseled Barbaresco. The firm Montefico tannins support the finish, giving the wine much of its focus and sense of proportion. As always, Montefico shows the vibrant, nuanced side of Barbaresco.

  • Roagna Barbaresco Montefico Vv 2010 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (95)

The 2010 Barbaresco Montefico Vecchie Viti captures a gorgeous stylistic middle ground at Roagna, with plenty of mid-palate sweetness allied to explosive energy. Beautifully complete throughout, the 2010 has it all. Tasted next to the Asili, the Montefico is dark, powerful and virile, with more overall depth and tannin, but less immediacy and sexiness. In other words, this is a classic wine from Montefico. Sweet red cherry, plum, game, licorice, chalk and wild herbs are laced into the vertical, structured finish. There is more than enough depth to allow the 2010 to drink well for a number of years.

    Wine Enthusiast (99)

Aromas of forest floor, violet, woodland berries and camphor shape the expressive nose on this riveting red. Structured yet smooth, the focused, savory palate boasts an almost weightless elegance as well as intensity, delivering juicy Morello cherry, blood orange, licorice and tobacco. Firm, refined tannins and fresh acidity provide support and balanced.

  • Roagna Barbaresco Montefico Vv 2017 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

The 2017 Barbaresco Montefico Vecchie Viti (with a precious few 1,214 bottles made) is extremely fine, direct and linear with a quality of old-school Nebbiolo intensity that is hard to find in today's modern Barbarescos. The wine is silky and fragile in character with dried cherry, iris root and iodine. The Roagna house style shows very fine tannins, and you'll find those in this vintage too. The Montefico comes from vines grown in distinct blue-gray marl soils.

  • Roagna Barbaresco Montefico Vv 2019 (1x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (97)

The 2019 Barbaresco Montefico Vecchie Viti comes from a parcel that was given as a dowry gift in 1929, thus changing hands to the Roagna family. It measures 0.24 hectares and production remains very limited at 1,222 bottles. Montefico tends to be more aromatic compared to Asili, and it reveals many layers of complexity that change rapidly and with fluidity. It starts off with a floral signature of roses and violets and then cedes to redcurrant and spicy licorice. The quality of the firm tannins in 2019 is terrific, and the acidity is spot on. There are elegant chalky sensations to close on this cellar-worthy Nebbiolo.

  • Roagna Barbaresco Paje 2013 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94)

The Pajè vineyard is among the most calcareous in terms of soil composition within the entire Barbaresco appellation. The vines are 50 years old, and those six years of barrel and bottle aging are absolutely necessary. This plot is a little under two hectares in size, and this site has been in family hands since 1953. In fact, Roagna is releasing all its expressions from 2013 at the same time. Thanks in part to the relative youth of the vines (young I suppose only by Roagna standards), the 2013 Barbaresco Pajè's aromas are large in scale and generally more fleshed out. The tannins are also a bit more dry or astringent. The wine shows deep contrasts between the sweet nature of the bouquet and the very sharp nature of the mouthfeel.

  • Roagna Barbaresco Paje 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94+)

Cinnamon, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and leather are some of the nuances that emerge from the 2014 Barbaresco Pajè. Pliant and open-knit, the 2014 is surprisingly open for a young Roagna Barbaresco, which makes it almost shockingly easy to enjoy even now (in relative terms), in what is the very early going by Roagna standards. Even, so there is plenty of Nebbiolo structure and tannin. Sweet rose petal, mint, tobacco, underbrush, game, and sweet red berry fruit add to the wine's stunning allure.

  • Roagna Barbaresco Paje 2015 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

The 2015 Barbaresco Pajè is the most nuanced and complete of the four wines in this lower tier of vineyard designates. Deceptively light in body, the 2015 possesses striking complexity and dimensions. Breadth and power are implied more than overtly stated. Clean, minerally notes punctuate the finish. The Pajè packs a serious punch. It will be even better in another few years' time. This is just classic Roagna and the wine in this range that offers the best value. I loved it.

Structured but also loaded with finesse, this opens with earthy aromas of truffle, blue wildflowers, new leather and ripe dark-skinned berries. Juicy and delicious, the full-bodied palate doles out succulent Morello cherry, crushed raspberry and licorice before closing on a hint of tobacco. Noble tannins and fresh acidity provide the firm framework and balance. Give it plenty of time to fully develop.

Approachable and long, the 2018 Barbaresco Paje boasts ripe tannins with a plush texture and displays a light rustic side, with ripe black raspberries, fresh flowers, and a rounded feel on the palate. It is long through the finish, with good ripeness in this vintage. Very approachable, it can be enjoyed now and over the next 15 years.

  • Roagna Barbaresco Paje 2019 (3x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

Luca Roagna's father was born in 1953, and that year also marks the first vintage this wine was produced by Luca's grandfather Alfredo, who was deeply convinced by the potential of this vineyard and went into deep financial debt after the war in order to purchase this land. The 2019 Barbaresco Pajè is muscular and firm with dark fruit and grippy tannins. There is a chalky quality that reflects the site's limestone soils. Delivering ample heft and dimension, this is a wine of substance.

  • Roagna Barbaresco Paje VV 2008 (1x300cl)

    Vinous (96)

The 2008 Barbaresco Pajé Vecchie Viti opens with an exquisite bouquet that bears more than a passing resemblance to the great Rionda Barolos in its pure seductiveness. Sweet and perfumed throughout, the 2008 conquers all of the senses with its pure fruit and exceptional overall balance. Like Grand Cru Burgundy, the Vecchie Viti is a wine of subtlety and grace. Don't expect a tannic behemoth, but rather a wine that stands out for its exceptional polish and finesse. This is a must-have bottle for Roagna aficionados.
  • Roagna Barbaresco Paje VV 2009 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92)

The 2009 Barbaresco Pajé Vecchie Viti shows the heat of the vintage in its powerful, imposing structure. There is plenty of depth and intensity in the glass, but at the same time, the flavors are also more forward. The Vecchie Viti has a bit more tannin and structure than the straight Pajé, which itself is made from 45 year-old vines! Today, my impression is of a wine on a relatively fast track of evolution, despite its present beauty.
  • Roagna Barbaresco Paje VV 2011 (1x500cl)

    Vinous (95+)

Roagna's 2011 Barbaresco Pajé Vecchie Viti opens with the most exquisite aromatics imaginable. A hypothetical blend of Asili and Montefico, the Pajé Vecchie Viti offers captivating perfume, ripe, silky fruit and exceptional overall balance. Oddly, the Vecchie Viti is much more accessible than the straight Pajé, which Roagna ascribes to this wine having had one more racking during aging. In 2011, the Barbaresco Pajé Vecchie Viti is pure and total finesse.
  • Roagna Barbaresco Paje VV 2016 (1x75cl)

Blue flower, tobacco, camphor and ripe berry are just some of the aromas you'll find on the stunning red. Firmly structured and still youthfully austere, the compelling palate features ripe Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and crushed mint alongside noble tannins. Bright acidity keeps it well-balanced and lends a seriously ageworthy structure.

  • Roagna Barbaresco Paje VV 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

The 2017 Barbaresco Pajè Vecchie Viti is fascinating to taste next to the straight Pajè. The old vines bottling shows more depth and muscle, along with a distinctly savory imprint that is quite beguiling. Sweet dried cherry, spice, crushed flowers, mint and incense infuse the 2017 with notable depth. The tannins are a bit unyielding today, so a few years of cellaring at a minimum seem warranted.

  • Roagna Barbaresco Paje VV 2018 (1x150cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (96)

A bright, transparent, youthful ruby color, the 2018 Barbaresco Paje Vecchie Viti is more intense on the nose and concentrated with aromas of rustic cherries, saddle leather, crushed roses, and fresh earth. Coming from vines as old as 90 years (compared to 50 years for the other Paje bottling), it offers fantastic structure, with velvety rich tannins, a delicate warmth on the finish, and a lot of length. It really steps up the game here. Drink 2026-2046.

  • Roagna Barbaresco Paje VV 2019 (3x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (98)

Asili's ace card is elegance. Montefico has especially fragrant aromas, and Pajè is distinguished by its structure. That textural richness comes from the advanced age and deep roots of 80-year-old vines. The Roagna 2019 Barbaresco Pajè Vecchie Viti was born in an amphitheater of vines on limestone soils. The top part of the vineyard where the mineral signature is more pronounced goes to the Barbaresco Crichët Pajé, and the remaining fruit is used here. The wine shows a combination of sweetness and power with chalky tannins to close. Of the four Vecchie Viti wines (including three Barbarescos and one Barolo), this is the last wine served in the tasting. Luca Roagna makes this choice because the Pajè Vecchie Viti shows the biggest tannic structure. The Vecchie Viti wines will hit the market in January or February 2025.
  • Roagna Barolo Pira 2007 (12x75cl)
    (12x75cl) 2007

    Vinous (93)

The 2007 Barolo La Pira is a huge, voluptuous wine endowed with stunning textural richness and depth at this level. Dark cherries, plums, menthol and flowers flow through to the rich, enveloping finish as this broad-shouldered yet utterly impeccable wine opens up in the glass. Like so many wines in this vintage, the 2007 is open for business yet also appears to have more than enough structure to age well for many years. Sweet floral notes, spices and tobacco reappear on a gorgeous finish.
  • Roagna Barolo Pira 2013 (1x75cl)
    (1x75cl) 2013

    Vinous (95)

The 2013 Barolo Pira is dark and powerful to its core. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2013 is all nerves and muscle. Iron, blood, smoke, cedar, smoke and licorice give the 2013 much of its super-distinctive flavor profile. In the glass, the 2013 is wonderfully deep and exotic, with layers of dimension that open up effortlessly over time. Readers will have to be patient with the 2013, but it is hugely promising. Sadly, prices for the Roagna wines have gone up dramatically in recent years. If there is one wine that readers should absolutely not miss, it is the 2013 Barolo Pira.
  • Roagna Barolo Pira 2014 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (91)

The 2014 Barolo Pira is a very pretty wine, but it is also quite open, both in its aromatics, and structural feel, where the wine feels unusually ample. Dark spice, tobacco, worn-in leather and mint are nicely laced together. This is a superb effort for the year, but I would not plan on cellaring it for too long, as it is quite open for a young Barolo, by Roagna standards. Relative to the other wines in this lineup, the Pira comes across as a touch flat and lacking in body. Much of that is attributable to the vintage.

Italy has gone from strength to strength, with standards of winemaking improving all the time and more indigenous varietals than ever before reaching foreign markets. Every single region is a treasure trove of undiscovered gems worth exploring, while the more classic wines like Barolo and Brunello di Montalcino have more than caught up in quality with their French counterparts without catching up in price. A dizzying array of style and a natural affinity with food means there is really no need to look any further no matter the occasion.
